As most scifi fans know, the new version of Battlestar Galactica began last night. What are your opinions on it? I personally enjoyed it even though I've only seen a few episodes of the original series.

The one confusion I have is if the new version is going to be a regular series on SCI-FI channel or if it is just a movie shown in several parts like Dune was. It would be incredible if it became a weekly show because something has been missing from the channel since it canned Farscape(What a great show that was).

Galactica is only supposed to be a mini-series.
I don't know how many episodes that means.
I was in a kind of fog last nite. So, I had a hard time following it.
I'm not jazzed that they made Starbuck a woman, Nor am I too excited that they've completely changed the Cylons.
But otherwise, I was drugged up on pain meds and had a hard time following it.
I guess I'll tape it next time around.

I haven't forgiven Sci-Fi since the cancellation of Farscape and have been boycotting it since. I did see part of BSG the other night, but didn't find any interest in it. I might give it another go since it's only a mini-series (and is guaranteed to end properly, without being trashed.)

I watched it and thought it was good. I plan to make a point of catching the rest of them. Science Fiction is the genre that benefits most from technology. Science fiction can still suck, but the believability of special effects nowadays, even in a TV production, is awesome and really helps the genre.

By the way does anyone remember the one prop in BSG which, in an effort to science-fictionalize, ended up looking riduculously stupid?

I would say the original Cylons.

I watched the end of the Mini-series tonight, and they left it open enough for a re-make of the Series.

Nope. The baby strollers. They were the biggest most ridiculous looking things I'd ever seen. I suppose using one on a regular basis makes me more attuned to it. But there is no time or solar system where such a stupid contraption would ever be used. "Boo" to the designers who thought that one up.

How many two hour parts were there? I saw part one and the conclusion. Do I have a middle to catch still?

I think that there were only two.
But they're re running the whole thing in it's entirety on Sunday night at 6pm (Central).

With al the unaswered questions, it's ripe for a series remake.

Baltar is also less evil, but more conflicted this time around.
I'm also not too sure about the conflict between Apollo and Adama.
And Colonel Tigh was not a drunk, in the original series.

Why do thy have to modernize, and add dysfunction?

And by the way, care to state why? Or what was better about the original?

i dont know.........it just seemed like the original was a bit better......in one of those ways im not smart enough to describe:p

Been watching the series on DVD. I have to say this is an excellent show. Good music, good acting, good dialogue... I'm having trouble finding anything at all to take issue with. I'm suddenly finding myself becoming a big fan.

I never saw the original, so I really like the starbuck character...

Edit: STUPID STUPID name though... why the hell did they have to call it battlestar galactica... I mean comeon!!!

I rented a DVD of this, just last weekend(what a dork). I've always wanted to see the original when I was a kid, but never got to. I really liked the DVD, but it was like only three hours long. Was that the season premiere or something? I will check my local blockbuster for more Battlestar DVDs. 👍

Sounds like you rented the miniseries... the series picks up from there. Season one of the series is on DVD.

You were right. I went to Blockbuster tonight, and it was the miniseries. They didn't have the regular season series. :indiff:

I've been netflixing it. Do you have netflix or the blockbuster online thing? The regular season is really worth watching if you liked the miniseries. Perhaps you can get a friend to netflix it.

I did try Netflix before and I liked it. I'll probably try the Netflix or the Blockbuster Online(comes with 2 free local rental!).

Let me know if those two free local rentals include new releases or if they're restricted to older movies. I've been wondering that for a while.

I didn't think about that. I was under the impression that it was new or old. One of the reasons why I don't belong to a online rental shop is because of the Blockbuster. Sunday thru Thursday, they give me rent one get one free(free one has to be a older release) for $3.79, plus no late fees. They also give you another free rental(new or old) for every five or six paid rentals. I have two free rentals on my account right now! If they quit spoiling me, I would have switched already. :grumpy:

No Spoilers below

I'm up-to-date on the Battlestar Galactica series now and I have to say, for the most part, it's only getting better. It's doing that thing that I LOVE science fiction to do, it's investigating morality. Man! Talk about adding another level!

So here's what we have to keep us entertained

1) Hot Chick
2) Special effects and explosions
3) Emotional Turmoil (Father vs. Son, Boyfriend vs. Girlfriend, Political struggles)
4) Technical Challenges and Detail (Computer viruses, Resource gathering, etc)
5) Emotional Conflicts Between Humans and Psylons
6) Human-Human, and Human-Psylon morality conflicts

Man, it's fracking fascinating. I'm totally hooked on this show. This may be the single best television show I have ever seen, and while it isn't perfect, it certainly is in a class of its own.

*SPOILERS*

I become bored over the weekend and decided to watch Season 3 all in one go. Funny it took me this long to watch it after the other two, because it's certainly become interesting... definitely different to any other series I have ever watched. With all the weird happenings between the humans and Cylons, I still have no idea what the Cylons want to achieve... or whether they are even trying to help. It's just all very peculiar (humal-cylon in a bath controlling a whole Base Ship speaking random (or is it?) crap - wtf?) but addictive. They have got into some impossible situations as well which I thought they would never get out of, but they escaped each time... becoming more and more battered.

Starbuck coming back from death right at the end is even more odd, apparently knowing the location of Earth. Is she a clone-human that Earth planted on Caprica at the beginning that revives like the Cylons do? Or was her revival a true act of god? And what the hell is the music from a radio some of the crew members are hearing? The 4 people we saw hearing it, are they part of the final 5?

Overall, apart from the odd going ons with the Gods, dreams etc, the producers been trying to keep everything realistic. You would be having issues with people you are constantly working with - I know it would start to drive me mad after everything they had been through. The working conditions are bad, even though they eventually did start to sort some of it out. There is Disease, terrorism, lack of proper staff... I could go on.

I'm looking forward to the next season now, which is apparently going to be aired April next year. 👍

Well ive never watched this show until a friend recommended it to me, so i saw seasons 1 and 2 on offer and got them, not ive only watched three episodes but it seems like a good show, i will reserve judgment till ive watched them all.

The missus and I have been renting Galactica on DVD. I have to firmly agree with Danoff : this is quite possibly the finest TV drama I have ever watched. It's a travesty that this show doesn't have higher ratings.

We're about half way through Season 2. I'm hoping they'll wrap the show up later this year so we won't have to go through the agonizing wait for the last DVD set.

(I refuse to stream/torrent such a fraking excellent show, and watching it on TV never suits our schedules)

Yea, that's about when I made the post that I did earlier in this thread - half-way through Season 2. The show takes a decided down-turn (at least it did for me) through part of Season 2 and into Season 3. I was about ready to write it off entirely, but the current season is starting to get back to the solid writing of old. This is the final season for the show, and they're pulling out all the stops.

Anyway, my recommendation is to be ready for some episodes that make you scratch your head wondering what the writers were thinking, but hang in there because it appears to be coming back.

Yeah, It's one of the few shows, including 24, that keep me properly tense and excited to see what happens next.

There's moments through out the seasons that are not explained at all. I presume it's deliberatly shown like that to keep you thinking towards the end. Well, I hope that they explain almost everything pretty soon.

Season 4 is going to be the last season apparently, and it's already on episode 7 (being aired friday evening in America AKAIK). It's a double episode and it's starting to get weird again... and something totally random happens which makes me want to see the next episode. Good stuff. 👍

Well based on my last post I've watched all of series 1 including the prequel mini series and also series 2, I'm just waiting for the DVD versions of 4 to come out and i will buy 3 and 4 together along with Razor. Its a classic show and I've just got so hooked. For me tho what makes the show even better is the soundtrack which i have for series 1 to 3 on CD. top notch. 👍

Didn't realise there was a thread for this

Such an excellent series this, my wife and i have become totally addicted to it. I hated the original series back in the 80's so didn't really fancy watching the new one when it was first announced. There's a TV critic in the UK called Charlie Brooker who i rarely disagree with on his reviews, so when a read an article by him praising this new BSG series i thought i should give it a go. I noticed that one of the Sky channels was airing the 'Razor' feature length episode a couple of days later and knowing that it wouldn't spoil too much of what had gone on before we watched it and totally fell for it. Neadless to say, series 1-3 was ordered on Amazon the very next day. After watching 2 - 4 episodes a night, we managed to finish season 3 just in time for the start of season 4. It's a shame season 4 has been split into two half seasons (the second half been aired some time in Nov i believe?) 'cause i really want to see how it all pans out. It really has to be the best thing to be on TV for ages.

Anyone for more BSG soon? The last ten episodes will begin to air on Jan 19 2009!

Im currently getting into plot, rewatching season 3 and the first 10 on s4. Mabye a bit early since it is still one and a half month before it starts. Anyway I hope it gets a good ending which many tv-series seldom gets.

Have you heard anything about the proposed spin-off series 'Caprica'?
