EPIC GERMAN FACEOFF, GO!!!!

  • Total voters
    64
  • Poll closed .
Excellent. I know that I voted for R8 since it's first time Audi dared to do anything like it.. but still, there was a small voice inside me reminding that I would take 911 SC 3.0 from the 80's if I'd get a chance..

I think Porsche may rewind it to 911 or go to some strange mix of letters and numbers for the chassis code.

997B, 997C, 998, 998B, 998C, etc.

I voted for the 911 because, to be truthful, it does more for the motoring world. It's a constant evolution of an imperfect basis, never COMPLETELY clean-sheeted since its inception, just forever advancing. The R8 will go for a few years and either die or be replaced... It is a disposable, forgettable design with a few neat elements; it's the average supercar really. MR, low, wide tires, and a good bit of tech thrown in. The 911 manages to reach supercar performance levels without bowing in and giving its soul up for ultimate performance.

Who knows? They will have to do something with the numbers eventually.

After the 998 and 999, they can take it full circle and call the next 901.

I doubt Peugeot would have anything to say this time since the car's official name would still be "911".

BMW have run out of E##s, so they're going to F## next year.

So maybe the next 911 will be the 1001...

Well the votes are over and I got to say the R8 really does deserve it. Although I haven't said much about why I voted for the 911, everyone else has pretty much spoken for me. 👍 Yes, the 911 would always be what some people call the benchmark car which set standards throughout the sports car industry and how many manufacturer are comparing their cars to the 911. The R8 seems to be the only car that stood up to the challenge and won it outright.

Would be interesting what the R8 is going up against in the next round.... :)

Trust me, its going to be difficult! Right now the R8 is in a fairly "safe" bracket that may need some adjustment. I'm probably going to organize the seeds by the number of votes received, and with this runoff, I'll give the R8 19.5 votes, which likely makes it a #2 seed in one of the brackets.

Bought an Autocar today because of an interesting article.

They had a test between the new facelifted 997, the R8 and the GT-R. The 997 actually finished last of the three! Apparently it's moved the 911 game along, but the others have moved the sports car game along even further.

For the record, the GT-R beat both of them :p Quite a good test though, if you can find a copy have a read.

It still hasn't really changed my opinion though. I think I'd still go for the 911. Forgetting the GT-R for the moment as we have plenty of discussions already open on that, the 911 is still the purer design for me, and much as the R8 is technically the more impressive and isn't compromised by the location of it's engine, it's pretty impressive how much Porsche has developed a concept that's essentially fifty years old (and older, if you count the 356 and the Beetle from where the basic design originally came).

And the R8 will never be a legend in the same way as the 911 is. For Audi, it'll just be a disposable sports car that will get entirely replaced when they decide they can do better. The 911 is THE Porsche and probably one of the most recognisable shapes on the road.

Or even older, if you count the cars that the Beetle ripped off in the first place.

Or when Piech puts his foot down.

Audi rumours are the V10 version blitz' the ring in a GTR rivaling time. Cant remember the exact time but it was unbelieveably quick. Audi must have decided that if you cant beat em, join em, cheat, and miracolously all of a sudden start making vehicles that are apparently much much much much faster than any of their previous efforts around the ring.

They'll be wallriding.

I've no doubt that many manufacturers could rival or beat the GT-R's 'Ring time if they put their minds to it and the corporate propaganda was as important as it is to Nissan.

Yay. Someone who shares my opinion!
