Poverty, that poll you posted shows that they also agree that the Clio is the better hot hatch.

Backfire much?

However, let's not forget the 38hp advantage the Golf and Leon have. Even though the Clio is lighter, 38hp is a huge difference with small cars.

So you want the VAG vehicles to get penalised for having more power?

Since the Golf was a good 5k more expensive to begin with, that's a large chasm for depreciation to overcome. Don't forget, the cheaper the car is, the less money you can lose on it.

Things dont always work like that.

Buy a BMW and a similiar specced saab and the saab will be cheaper. 4 years down the line the BMW would be worth twice as much as the saab.

The same thing applies for the Golf and the clio. You will lose more money running the clio 172/182 than a golf GTI.

WHAT??!?!?!?! Now this is what drove me to reply to this. The Clio 182, one of the greatest hot hatches of all time is greatly recognised to be just that.
Most people would imagine hot hatches to be-
Cheap
Nippy
Fun

The Clio covers all these excellently. Certainley mich more than the Golf does. It ain't cheap, and although it's quick enough, it won't bring a smile to your face like the Clio will.

LOL but the clio breaks down, has a crap interior, crap ride,is noisey, poor interior space, next to no boot space, isnt a four seater but a 2+2....The list is endless. Instead of getting that cereal box car you might aswell get a propper sports car to begin with. Oh and it seems that only the Brits are ravving about this car so much....

Focus ST goes for 17k these days, two more than the clio but with alot more power and space. The Focus ST beats the overpriced clio out.

The cheapest clio is 7k. So for the 172/182 thats a 8k price hike for the fast model. The cheapest golf is 12k, and the GTI also has a 8k price hike, but you are getting a array of extra equipment for your money, whilst with the clio you just get a sporting setup and a sporty engine. The clio is expesive for what it is. Hell some of the damn things havent even got airbags.

Personally, I'd consider them to be part of the small family car genre. I agree they're hatchbacks, but they're bigger than average.

The focus is the average sized car of the UK....

I trust you've driven all the nominees enough to make an informed decision that the Clio isn't in the same league as the Golf?

Have you? No...

Atleast I have driven the detuned version of the clio motor so have a little experience of how it most likely delivers its power.

Exactly.

However, as an overall view, the Golf has just as many weaknesses as the Clio does.
Like what other than handling performance?

Firstly, the Golf has a lot on the Golf. For my money, it's better at being a hot hatch. Secondly, the Clios are not absurdly expensive to service, as I've been reliably informed by the proprietor of R.M. Motors, Commonside, Batley.

That means nothing to me. Owners and whatcar.co.uk have all said that they are expensive to service. I think I will believe them.

2001 Autocar 0-100-0 test clocked the Renault Clio Sport 172 doing 0-60 in 6.64 seconds.

VW quotes 6.6 secs for the 230PS VW golf GTI eqiuipped with DSG, and VW are always conservative with their figures...

Point to point, start here and finish over there, be it a short trip or a long one, that's point to point. The Clio is the faster and better handling car.

The clio is only the faster car if both drivers stick to the traffic laws. In germany the Clio would be left for dead depending on the route.

That would dependd if the wind was coming form the side, behind or you were driving into it. It would also depend on how the wind flows over the car more than it would depend on the weight. That is a question you can't answer and I'm not going to attempt to answer since I don't have the Cd figures for the sides of the cars, and neither do you.

lol thats a broad statement because you dont know what I have access to. I have Cd. figures for the GTI but not the clio. Im sure we could find them though ;)

Rather limited there, if you want sensible don't go for a hot hatch, the whole idea of a hot hatch is to provide thrills, the Clio does that better than all the others in the poll. The Golf does it, but not as well as the Clio and it also costs a lot more. The Leon, same as the Golf but not quite as thrilling to drive acording to reviews. More thrilling to look at imo but the reviews are probably right, VW arn't going to undercut the Golf with a car that beats it in every way.

No way!!!!!

The whole purpose of the hothatch is a sensible car with performance. A hatchback is a sensible car. How does it having 200hp make it unsensible? Why would people get a hothatch if theyre unsensible? You might aswell go witha sports car then.

The whole point of the hothatch is meant to be a affordable performance car for the whole family.

The leon doesnt beat the golf in every way. The golf is slightly more refined and comfortable. Perfomance wise the seats provide more bang for buck than the VW so the brand does undercut it.

The Type-R wasn't being crticised for it having VTec, it was because you needed to be redlining it almost all the time to get it to do anything, you can drive the Clio happily around town at low revs, and it'll comply. The Type-R will spit in your face and ask for more revs.

Hold up. here you guys are saying "but like OMG hot hatches are meant to be all about the hardcore thrills" but then say the Type-R engine is too racy?

BTW the renault 2.0 lump is a rev nut just like the type-r aswell, maybe not as much but it still is. The thing loves to rev.

What year omdel are we talking about here because the only 2.0 currently on sale is the sport 197? And if your not talking about it being in a Clio then the chances are it's not only going to be running with less power, but it's also going to be in a different car. Theres a hell of a lot you can do to an engine to tweak and change the characteristics. Not even the engine itself.

2005 megane. Bloody thing revved like mad, made taking off from a standstill not that easy unless your prepared to shoot off everytime.

Well that just confirms people don't seem to rate the Golf that highly for a hot hatch, the Leon's doing better than I'd have expected, the Focus deserves attention thugh imo not to be in the lead, and the Clio is only two votes behind.

I expected the ford to do well as brits have a love affair with them, especially these older performance car drivers who still have boyhood dreams of the fast fords of the 80's and 90's. The golf and leon being so similiar they are taking votes from each other. I should have left one out but the guys would have questioned me too much as to why.

Autocar took the Clio 182 to 60 in 6.3 seconds. They took the GTi to 60 in 6.5 seconds.

But that GTI only had 200PS and not 230PS like the one Im talking about.

Scenario:
On a motorway, with a strong gust, what's gonna be more stable?
A Suzuki Samurai (942kg) or a Caterham Seven SuperlightR500 (460kg)?

the suzuki cant do 120mph in the first place but you showed great skill there taking it out of context.

Except it is only a hot hatch because it has a powerful engine. The Renault 182 was the last true hot hatch (or perhaps the Peugoet 106, unless you count the new Fiat Panda 100), and the Golf GTi hasn't been a "real" hot hatch in the original sense since 1992.
And either way, l4s's point had to do with the fact that for him, a hot hatch would be impractical. Which would be the case most of the time, I'm sure.

The clio is an unpractical hothatch. Most hothatches are not impractical.

Who mentioned the race track? - This is all about enjoyment on the open road. Even if the latest Golf was quicker from A to B - it's the Clio driver who will have had the most satisfying journey - which is the whole reason for having a hot hatch.

Its not all about having the most satisfying journey, and a long journey in a clio would most likely turn pretty unsatisfying pretty soon. A hothatch is a comprimised performance car. Comprimise in being that it cant be too hardcore and still have decent levels of comfort and practicality.

I'm American and I realise that Clio 182 is a better hot hatch than the Golf GTi has been for over 13 years.

And the Golf is turbocharged. So, your point?

Which is all well and good, but the cars that beat it aren't in this poll, barring the Focus.

Your always a bit of an ass arent you.

1. So what if its turbocharged whats that got to do with me correcting him that both cars have the same size engine. So whats your point?

2. Yeah so in two polls the clio isnt winning even though we have about 7 odd members who proclaim it to be the best thing since sliced bread even though they have never driven one. Im not trying to say the LCR or GTI is the best hothatch im just saying that they are better than the clio.

People take a couple reviews to heart too much. The subaru guys have atleast driven some of the vehicles so I think tehy can make a more informed choice than any of us here, let alone a kid who lives in a country that doesnt get those utterly and terribly unreliable, and poorly built clios ;)

Poverty, that poll you posted shows that they also agree that the Clio is the better hot hatch.

Backfire much?

Did you read it properly?

The LCR is ahead, the Focus ST is ahead, and the 205GTI is ahead. Yes the VW GTI is behind, but its basically teh same car as the Leon Cupra R, except that the Leon is more sporting, whilst being cheaper so it will get the nod over the Golf GTI on a sporting forum. Seeing as they both ride the same chassis if I took one or the other out of the vote I would predict that VAG vehicle would be leading or neck and neck with the Focus.

Oh and it seems that only the Brits are ravving about this car so much....

thanks for that :grumpy:

It also looks like you're biased against the Clio for some reason. I bet you're an anti-Renault in F1.

thanks for that :grumpy:

It also looks like you're biased against the Clio for some reason. I bet you're an anti-Renault in F1.

No im anti-ferrari actually.

I still give ferrari vehicles their just dues.

I openly acknowledge that the clio172/182 is one of the best handlign and fun to drive hothatches ever, but that doesnt make it the best hothatch. It takes several qualities for that title.

If this was all about performance I would vote the clio, but its not.

Here I have found some definitive evidence about reliability ;)

Not being big headed or gloating but as you guys can see the Leon Cupra-R is in the lead, even though the Golf GTI will most likely have taken a couple votes from its same chassised sportier sibling. :D

Your always a bit of an ass arent you.

Uncalled for. Why don't you try not being an ass yourself for a while?

2. Yeah so in two polls the clio isnt winning even though we have about 7 odd members who proclaim it to be the best thing since sliced bread even though they have never driven one. Im not trying to say the LCR or GTI is the best hothatch im just saying that they are better than the clio.

Yes, I did read it properly. I'm not sure you fully understand what you're posting, however.

If that were true, the people who voted for the Clio would have voted for the GTI instead, and thus there's a large enough gap between the Leon and Golf to merit them liking one more than the other. Don't forget these cars are similar, but aimed at different markets.

You're saying that the Clio isn't as good a hot-hatch as the Golf, not the Leon. Now from what you've posted, it's clear the people prefer the Clio to the Golf. Get over it.

People take a couple reviews to heart too much. The subaru guys have atleast driven some of the vehicles so I think tehy can make a more informed choice than any of us here, let alone a kid who lives in a country that doesnt get those utterly and terribly unreliable, and poorly built clios ;)

Must you be rude to everyone?
And I trust you've lived with the Clio 182 for long enough to judge for yourself eh?

lol I will do a proper reply later to the points you guys have raised, but looking at who has voted for the clio is it just me or has anyone noticed that every voter was british? I mean it must say something. I think you guys are letting the mags sway your decision a little too much.
No i didn't notice, I'm not a member of that forum funny how not all the members who've voted for it in this poll are British though.

Anyway heres an update on how the impreza forum guys who have voted. (remeber that many of these guys will have had experience with several of the vehicles in the poll :D)
How do you know that, because they typed that they did?

15 votes to 10, seems like it's being considered a lot better than the Golf as a hot hatch to me.

I see that the Leon cupra is AHEAD of the clio by one vote. And seeing as the Golf GTI and Leon are near enough the same vehicle if I had left the Golf or leon out, I think a VAG chassied vehicle would have several more votes than the clio, and that forum has had plenty of clio sport owners.
Whatare you trying to prove with your other forum poll that shows the Clio with more votes, you can make excuses and specualte as to why that is all you want, bottom line is they have given the Clio more votes.

Just had to reply to this now.

1. The Golf GTI and the Clio 172/182 BOTH use a 2Litre engine. They both have the same size displacement!!!!!!!
Totally missed his point, his point is that a hatchback with a big engine and a sporty leaning isn't a true hot hatch, he's saying that the Golf has far more in common with that description than the Clio, and the Clio fit's the hot hatch label far more than the Golf.

Not going by this poll it isnt, and by the poll I posted on another forum they seem to agree that the clio isnt the best.
but better than the Golf so far.

Also for those who say that hot htaches arent meant to be practical what are you guys thinking? The whole point of the hothatch is to be a practical performance car
You do make a semi valid point there, however practicality comes in amany different forms, a hot hatch has to be practical in cost to buy, clio takes that it's 5 grand cheaper. Seat 4 people ideally, Clio and Golf both do that. And go like stink, the Clio is better than the Golf at that. People who want a performance car that they can do the shopping in may well pick a hot hatch, but a hot hatch is not the best car for that job.

So you want the VAG vehicles to get penalised for having more power?
He didn't say that.

Things dont always work like that.

Buy a BMW and a similiar specced saab and the saab will be cheaper. 4 years down the line the BMW would be worth twice as much as the saab.
So, why are you going on about depreciation, after 4 years the depreciation on the Clio won't leave it 5 grand cheaper than a 4 year old Golf. 3 grand maybe, not 5, that's that 5 grand premium you have to get back on the Golf.

The same thing applies for the Golf and the clio. You will lose more money running the clio 172/182 than a golf GTI.
No you won't, they cost a similar ammount to run but the Golf is in a higher insurance bracket than the Clio. the Clio depreciates more but you make that back and more in the initial purchase over the Golf's price.

LOL but the clio breaks down, has a crap interior, crap ride,is noisey, poor interior space, next to no boot space, isnt a four seater but a 2+2
Any car breaks down, as was said earlier, if you look after your car it will generally be reliable, the clio isn't really bad like Alfa's electronics, it's a decent car just not the most reliable compared to a Golf. Look after one and it will see you through fine. The interor is sparse, it's meant to be. If it's a 2+2 it's a 4 seater 💡.

Oh and it seems that only the Brits are ravving about this car so much....
Or not. Not all the voers are British

Focus ST goes for 17k these days, two more than the clio but with alot more power and space. The Focus ST beats the overpriced clio out.
How is the cheaper and faster Clio overpriced? The ST is one heck of a car and they handle great on a smoother road, they arn't as nimble as the Clio, they arn't as quick off the line as the Clio and they are in the same insurance group as the Golf.

It probably is expensive for what it is, the Golf however get's beaten hands down in terms of value for money by a large number of cars so you can't say the Golf is good value value for money either. For a hot hatch the Golf is vastly over priced, for a normal hatch is't castly over priced.

Atleast I have driven the detuned version of the clio motor so have a little experience of how it most likely delivers its power.
No you don't, because that can change dramatically with sometimes minor twaeks to the power train.

Like what other than handling performance?
Prchase price, insurance group, thrills.

VW quotes 6.6 secs for the 230PS VW golf GTI eqiuipped with DSG, and VW are always conservative with their figures...
Autocar was driving the DSG, the Clio was faster.

The clio is only the faster car if both drivers stick to the traffic laws. In germany the Clio would be left for dead depending on the route.
How the hell do you work this out, if both drivers stick dead to the traffic laws, then provided they have the same conditions they will take the same time, if you put your foot down the Clio is quicker and it handles better all the while offering more thrills.

lol thats a broad statement because you dont know what I have access to. I have Cd. figures for the GTI but not the clio. Im sure we could find them though ;)
So what, I know for a fact you don't have the Cd figures for the sides of both cars.

The whole purpose of the hothatch is a sensible car with performance. A hatchback is a sensible car. How does it having 200hp make it unsensible? Why would people get a hothatch if theyre unsensible? You might aswell go witha sports car then.
No, not sensible, cheap performance cars that can carry 4 people. The Golf isn't cheap.

The whole point of the hothatch is meant to be a affordable performance car for the whole family.
no that would be a regular hatchback, a hot hatch is meant to provide thrills.

The leon doesnt beat the golf in every way. The golf is slightly more refined and comfortable. Perfomance wise the seats provide more bang for buck than the VW so the brand does undercut it.
It depends what your after, the Leon is more of hot hatch than the Golf yes, but it's still far too expensive imo.

Hold up. here you guys are saying "but like OMG hot hatches are meant to be all about the hardcore thrills" but then say the Type-R engine is too racy?
no, the Type-R engine can only be driven in one way, it's no more racy than the Clio or the Golf are capable of being be, but the problem is it's always racy.

BTW the renault 2.0 lump is a rev nut just like the type-r aswell, maybe not as much but it still is. The thing loves to rev.
Yeah, great, but you don't have to be revving it like mad to get the car to move at any decent rate like you do the Type-R, you sure like to bring new disccusion point in to complicate a debate don't you.

the suzuki cant do 120mph in the first place but you showed great skill there taking it out of context.
No he made a valid point, you incited that the fact the Clio was lighter meant it would be less stable at speed in strong winds, that isn't the case.

The clio is an unpractical hothatch. Most hothatches are not impractical.
It's more practcal than anyone should need it to be, it carries 4 people, you can go shopping in it ect. If you can;t carry as much as you need to carry then why have you bought a hatchback, simple as.

Your always a bit of an ass arent you.
No need to start insulting people Poverty, you're too old for that.

Are you guys seriously gonna make me have to make another poll on another forum but this time leaving the Golf GTI out?

Why would people vote for the GTI over the Leon Cupra R when they are basically the same car but the Leon is cheaper and faster. That answers why the Golf has so little votes. The people who would have voted for the Golf vote for the Leon because its better than the Golf. Simple. Or shall I make another poll and prove you guys wrong again?

Must you be rude to everyone?

Your posts are just pointless most of the time. When everyones going right for some reason you just always have to be different and go left. Tornado just likes to be difficult and come out with things that wind people up.

You're saying that the Clio isn't as good a hot-hatch as the Golf, not the Leon. Now from what you've posted, it's clear the people prefer the Clio to the Golf. Get over it.

How did you work that one out? The golf is better than the clio. The leon is better than the golf. So obviously people will vote for the leon, especially seeing as they are the same car, but the leon is sportier.

Also explain how in the GTP poll the clio and golf have both 7 votes. what your saying is wrong.

You're saying that the Clio isn't as good a hot-hatch as the Golf, not the Leon. Now from what you've posted, it's clear the people prefer the Clio to the Golf. Get over it.

Just like tornado.

See the highlighted bit.

Prove it or retract it.

I carried out the dealer network product launch training for the second generation of the Clio (2000), every model from 'poverty' spec upwards (pun most defiantly intended) was fitted with a drivers airbag as a minimum as per legal requirements at the time.

Just checked on the training material from the facelift launch (2001) and all versions came with twin front two stage airbags and front lateral airbags as standard (which was unique in its class at that time). In addition they were also all fitted with Brake Assist and rear seat belt pretensioners as standard (again unique in class at the time). All models also featured ABS with brake force distribution at a time when a lot of rivals offered ABS as a cost option on lower spec models.

If you really want I'm sure I can dig out the info from the actual 2000 product launch to show driver and passenger airbags right across the range at that time.

Atleast I have driven the detuned version of the clio motor so have a little experience of how it most likely delivers its power.
In what car/version exactly, please give this some context.

The clio is only the faster car if both drivers stick to the traffic laws. In germany the Clio would be left for dead depending on the route.
On an Autobahn yes, around a British B road I think it might be quite a different story (and many, many reviews have said as much).

Hold up. here you guys are saying "but like OMG hot hatches are meant to be all about the hardcore thrills" but then say the Type-R engine is too racy?

BTW the renault 2.0 lump is a rev nut just like the type-r aswell, maybe not as much but it still is. The thing loves to rev.
Having driven both a Civic Type R (last gen) and most variants of the Clio the low rev characteristics of the two are quite different. Yes they both love revs, but the CTR is very stubborn at low revs around town, while the Clio is not.

The clio is an unpractical hothatch. Most hothatches are not impractical.
Most hot hatches are no more or less practical than the models they are based on, however drivers who opt for a Hot Hatch most certainly put the practicality side of things a lot lower down the requirements list than those that buy the cooking versions. The Clio may not be winning in the poll (and given that its not sold in the states that does not surprise me), but some of what you are arguing here a bit, well strange.

Regards

Scaff

Your always a bit of an ass arent you.
That's right. I'm just 100% ass who argues simply because I like to see reactions. No seriously. That is right. No sarcasm.
The thing is though, when I'm prodding for reactions, I usually sit down to make sure what I'm arguing has factual back-up.

Poverty
1. So what if its turbocharged whats that got to do with me correcting him that both cars have the same size engine. So whats your point?
The fact that its turbocharged means that its accepted to be a larger engine. It is the flaw in "No replacement for displacement" therum, and is usually counted as such.
Poverty
2. Yeah so in two polls the clio isnt winning even though we have about 7 odd members who proclaim it to be the best thing since sliced bread even though they have never driven one. Im not trying to say the LCR or GTI is the best hothatch im just saying that they are better than the clio.
Except, the fact that it isn't winning in the polls and opinion that the Golf and Leon Cupra R are better are two completely different things. The best part? Your opinion on the Golf being better than the Clio isn't backed up by either poll.
Poverty
The LCR is ahead, the Focus ST is ahead, and the 205GTI is ahead. Yes the VW GTI is behind, but its basically teh same car as the Leon Cupra R, except that the Leon is more sporting, whilst being cheaper so it will get the nod over the Golf GTI on a sporting forum. You just answered your own question as to why the Clio is thought to be a better hot hatch than the current Golf GTi, or the two before that.
The Golf hasn't been a true hot hatch in 13 years. Every magazine I've ever read says pretty much that. None of them are British.
It has been a premium hatchback, with the idea of "sport" sucked out of it, since 1992. That is why the Leon Cupra R is better than the Golf GTi. Not simply because it is sportier, but because with the Golf you get that extra equipment that ruins the car's sporting potential.
You seem to thing that having a good interior helps it be a hot hatch. It doesn't. At all. Renault knew this, so they didn't bother with it. Volkswagen forgot that, and ruined the GTi in 1993 because they forgot that.

Poverty
Tornado just likes to be difficult and come out with things that wind people up.
It would be harder to wind you up if you weren't wrong so often.
Either way, your assertion that the Golf is a better car is irrelevant. No one said it wasn't better, which is why your tirades about the interior and reliability are pointless, because a good interior does not a good hot hatch make. You even admitted that before continueing to pointlessly argue about interior quality.
Quick reflexes, good driver connection with the road and good handling are. The Clio has these things in spades over the GTi, and a couple of them the GTi doesn't even have period.

Poverty
Focus ST goes for 17k these days, two more than the clio but with alot more power and space. The Focus ST beats the overpriced clio out.

You haven't proved us wrong yet. The only thing you've done is prove us right.

You still haven't discovered how flawed of an argument that is.
I'll post it again:

On a motorway, with a strong gust at any speed, what's gonna be more stable?
A Suzuki Samurai (942kg) or a Caterham Seven SuperlightR500 (460kg)?

Also explain how in the GTP poll the clio and golf have both 7 votes. what your saying is wrong.
You are saying the Golf GTi is better than the Clio. What you are saying is wrong then too, hypocrite.

...but looking at who has voted for the clio is it just me or has anyone noticed that every voter was british? I mean it must say something. I think you guys are letting the mags sway your decision a little too much.

It does say something - we love great handling cars 👍

It's not that suprising that the brits have voted for the hot Clio - Britain is by far the worlds largest consumer of hot French hatchbacks. I believe that more than half of all hot Clios and Meganes are exported to the UK. Most of the extra hot small Renaults (Trophies and Cups) are specificially tuned for British tastes.

Why wouldn't we let our decisions be swayed by professional road testers, who have driven all these cars and are in the best position to give an educated perspective?

Scaff - I think it was the 172 cup version without the airbags.

Tornado - I dont think you know what and what doesnt make a hothatch. I shall leave it at that. I mean you say renault didnt bother with a good interior as it would ruin the car. What renault does have a good interior? They are average at best.

TheCracker - Yes the clio is arguably the best handling hothatch, but I wouldnt claim that it was the best outright as I havent driven one, or its competition from its fellow french carmarkers.

Im arguing that the Golf GTI is a better car than the clio overall. I voted for the Leon Cupra R in the impreza website poll. I would be arguing that the leon is better if it was in this poll. Actually how about a change of tactic. You guys have a hollow victory in that Im now stopping to push the argument for the Golf GTI. I shall go back to my original argument that the Leon Cupra R is the best. Any one have anything to say about this? :D

Scaff - I think it was the 172 cup version without the airbags.

Then think again, for series production run cars a drivers air-bag is a legal requirement, all versions of the last generation Clio had drivers airbags.

The 172 (& 182) Cup versions lost the side airbags, but retained the driver and passenger airbags.

Would there be any chance of you linking to this forum (don't think you have yet), I'd be interested to see their discussion.

The polls still don't take into account that the Clio sport isn't sold outside Europe. And your first post in that thread swings the poll quite a lot, the whole idea of a hot hatch is to offer a thrilling sporty ride, something that Clio does better than the others. You you've instantly taken that out of the equation by making a poll for what is the best every day car :odd:, why not include sub 10k regular hatches then because they will walk it.

And then theres somene commenting on how the Civic Type-R will walk over everything else in that poll on a track, sure it will .

lol no they wouldnt as otherwise the fabia should be winning. I think we all need to come to an agreement what a hothatch is, and is meant to do for us to agree or come to some sort of conclusion to this discussion.

I interpret a hothatch as being a 4 seater hatchback, but a fast performance version of the standard shopping trolley model. I think of a hatchback as being a cheap performance car, to own and service relative to its power and price, whilst still being practical and economical.

Just because the hothatch is a performance car Id still expect a decent level of luxury unless I opted for a stripped out version, and decent levels of comfort. Generally I expect a hothatch to be a wise buy for a young family who enjoy a sporting drive.

To settle this though I have this to say. The Clio and Golf/Leon are two very different vehicles to begin with from day one. If we had a voite for best small hothatch I would have voted for the clio straight away, and for big/medium hothatch the Leon gets my vote straight away. I think If you havent got a family and dont mind lesser comfort the clio is the best choice. However if you have got a family and it is your only car and used by your wife/husband/kids the Golf/Leon would undoubtley be a strong contender.

There are two types of hothatches. The smaller barmy track stormer ones, and the more mature grown up ones. I hope we can all agree with this. 👍

Only I wouldn't class the grown up ones as proper hot hatches. I get what you are saying, but I do not rate a hot hatch on how many mpg it get's or if the people in the back are as comfey as me in the front. If I want a car for the family I'll buy a proper car for the family, a hot hatch would likely be a second car if I had a family and wanted one. I wouldn't buy any of the cars in that list if it was going to be my only car and I had a family so arguing which would be best in that situation is moot, I won't take any. And I wouldn't spend over 20k.

I would take a Leon Cupra R as my only car if I had a family. 35mpg, great performance and practical. I dont see why it wouldnt work or why you would need a second car.

To say that big hatchbacks are not hothatches is like saying that the 911's of today are not true sports cars like the 911's of the 70's. The game has moved one since then, things dont stay the same and cars have got bigger. The likes of the GTI and Leon Cupra are genuine hothatches.

You seem to be missing a rather fundamental point here, in that you are giving equal priority to the performance and practicality elements here, and that's simply not the case for the hot hatch. Performance comes first, with practicality a lot further down the list. In the case of hot hatches I think most people would rate price and safety over practicality in these cases.

However the size of the current generation of Leon and Golf are starting to push the limits of what most would class as a true hot hatch (just using the big hatchback argument is crass - the Mondeo has a hatch and it big - does that make an ST24 a hot hatch? Of course not), size and weight are critical factors in this. Its for that very reason that the new Clio 197 has come in for some criticism, the increase in both size and weight has blunted it from the last generation.

BTW - In regard to the top point, I have a family (wife and three kids) and have just ordered my new company car, must say I didn't go for the Leon, it didn't even make the shortlist.

From having driven both the Megane F1 (road version) and the normal Megane, plus the Clio Campus, I can tell you they don't have a great interior, but neither do their competitors. The Golf's interior isn't that much ahead of the Clio, although the Megane's is better than the VW.

Having driven a megane and and being in the VW golf I disagree, although the MK5 golf interior quality has dropped since the MK4. A well specced golf interior is definetly beautiful though.

Scaff whats your new company car?

Tornado - I dont think you know what and what doesnt make a hothatch. I shall leave it at that.
Good driver feedback. Good reflexes. Sharp handling. Light weight. More bout performance than practicality, though still rather practical. High speed result of light weight rather than large horsepower. A hatch.
This was the last hot hatch in the vein of the "original" hot hatch. The VW Golf GTi is no longer anything like that. The Clio is the only relatively new car like that.

I never said Renault was good with the interior. But with the Clio 182, they didn't even bother trying.

Actually, a hot hatch is pretty much anything popular in the sport-compact segment that is a hatchback. The GTI is very much that. So is the Focus--old and new--and neither that or the GTI are "lightweights". Sounds like the next WRX will be a hot hatch, also. DO think a hot hatch should cost $30,000? It will, and it will be very hot.
