I am new to GT5 and have tried using all the different views when racing.

I find the internal (premium) views a bit distracting, and ususally race using the "bonnet" (or hood) view, which to me is more like the view you get when driving in real life, where you are looking out of the windscreen 99% of the time, not at the instruments.

Just wondering what the consensus is on the forum for which is the preferred view for optimum lap times!

Philip.

I prefer cockpit not sure why but I'm better able to line up and handle corners in that view

I used the hood cam for the longest time when I started this game but when I got my wheel a few months ago, I started using bumper cam and now that's all I use. I do like the cockpit cam for the FGT though. PD did right by that car imo in the latest update.

I alternate between bonnet probably 25% of the time and cockpit 75%... it is realistic for the most part BUT not with all cars, you can't tell me that the views on the Citroen GT road and race models are standard or would even be legal on a real road... incredibly hard to read the track in those and just simply too constricting & narrow IMO but most cars are bang on though, a huge 👍 for PD for this game, despite the occasional glitch or quirk it gets a 10/10 from me 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

I go for cockpit view 90% of time, remaining 10% is for cam behind your ride. They just suit me best, especially when the car is not supremely fast. (Not saying that I can't drive fast rides lol)

i use the bonnet view 95% of the time, cockpit has too much interference...also prefer bonnet over bumper so i can exactly where my tires are left and right

I use the bumper view since GT4. It suits me best. But I think it's for yourself to decide by what view you get the most feeling for the car.

I only use the view where i see nothing of the car. When i drive my real life car i`m looking at the road, not at the car.

I use bumper view since i got my wheel as the instruments (revs, gear shift and speed) is easier to read.

I used cockpit view when i had my DS3

and the beauty of the game is we can all have the view we prefer, no matter what it is so I think it's an apt time to say....... GT5 FTW :)

Thanks for the replies! Think I'll stick with the hood view for the time being, and just inspect the interior during replays.

Seriously impressed by GT5 though, can't believe how comprehensive it is. For a car nerd like me, it's heaven!

I used the behind the car view for the longest time, but have switched to the bumper view. Seems to give me a bit more precision with the position of the car along with my inputs.

I've always used the behind view. I like to be able to read the characteristics of the car while turning.

I stick with the cockpit view, mainly for realism, but also because the HUD tends to distract me, and I like being able to turn off the guages and still actually race. For just d**king around the far back view is probable best, because you can see the idiots trying to ram you and dodge them.....Ahhhh, GT5 Online.......

My wheel broke so using Chase cam with DS3, usually use bonnet cam, I still believe it is the most realistic view that you have in the game, cockpit view feels too far back for me I don't have that much of the steering wheel in my line of sight when driving in real life.

Been using the chaser / third person / behind car view for about 10 years

switched to the hood view while i did the vettel challange. realized it really does make you a better driver 👍

the interior view is nice for novelty, but creates a billion blind spots.

i have used bumper cam since GT1. But I really like the in hood view, if it had the same HUD on the hood view as bumper I'd use hood. It's really the HUD on the bumper cam I prefer

For precise apexing, I find the roofcam the best. For a more realistic driving experience, cockpit view. However, in some cars like the Pug 908 LM race car, I also need a barf bag in this view, what with all the shaking... ;)

In GT3 and 4 I used behind car view exclusively, since the DS2 didn't really give much feedback and visual feedback was the only thing I could properly rely on.
With GT5 I bought a DFGT wheel, and as I get a lot of feedback from it, I've been using bumper cam mostly with the odd cockpit view race here and there.

However, lately I've gone nearly full on cockpit view, because I seem to have just that little bit more feedback from it that allows me to catch slides a tad earlier, as opposed to bumper cam view.
I am however slightly faster with bumper cam as long as I keep the car on the road, and I suspect I'll continue to be as it seems I'm just more aggressive when using bumper cam.
Which fortunately also means tires and fuel last a bit longer when using cockpit view.

Edit: There are however some cars that I can't drive in cockpit view without getting a serious headache, most notably the Mazda 787B. The field of view is just so tiny.

1) Bumper Cam for Pacing/Chasing (as to see rival's braking points better)
2)Hood/Bonnet Cam for tight passing (you see entire width of car if it fits)
3)Interior cam for Cruising
4) Chase Cam for Hot Lapping.

The fastest, and I mean the FASTEST drivers will tell you to use bumper view.
Its just easier to spot ur entry, apex, exit.

I've tried them all

Surprised how few people are using the bumper view. In my opinion it's by far the best. It's been shown that the "bumper" actually gives you the same field of view as if you were sat in the car, without being artificially narrowed as it is in the cockpit. Also I personally find that the majority of cars that I drive are not premium cars.

The preferred racing view is purely subjective, but since you asked for the view for optimum lap times, then I would go for roof cam.

I'm a bumper man m'self. Though I wish I could stand the 'chase' or the 'hood' cam, I love looking at the cars!

I've always preferred cockpit view in any (semi-)sims - to the point where it kept me from ever using standard cars in GT5 until the pseudo cockpits were introduced in Spec 2.0.
However after trying out roof cam in a few cars (I can see that some people mention a bonnet cam, but it's most definitely a roof cam I'm seeing in the cars I've tried, they don't have a bonnet cam) I'm sorely tempted to use it just for the vastly improved engine sounds with a hell of a lot more grunt and punch than the mostly more or less anemic cockpit and bumper cam sounds.

Chase cam I can't use though. Despite feeling even more like "cheating" than roof cam, it's arguably somewhat of the opposite for me as I feel completely disconnected from the car (perhaps even more so as I'm playing with a G25 and not a controller) and thus have a harder time judging corners and braking points than in cockpit view.

When using a DS3 I used to use this cam on the reg but now I prefer interior or the roof, depending on the car, now that I have a wheel... Now that you have said this about speed though I will try the bumper cam and try and beat some of my lap records with it, will know real fast if it does indeed make a significant difference!

Yes, it is easier to use bumper view, but I almost always use cockpit view because it is much more realistic, and it gives me the best experience. You feel the speed better, the car is shaking and so on.... But ultimately you are right in my opinion. If I was to make the fastest possible lap I would use bumper view.
