MazdaSpeed 6 '05

by VR6GTI72

Deep Forest: 1.32.945

First Impression: This is a pretty cool looking 4 door. Ive been really liking what Mazda has done with the new line of cars. Now they go and set up the Mazda6 with AWD and a turbo engine....brilliant. The addition of a more aggressive hood and dual exhaust makes this car stand out amongst the "regular 6's". You wouldn't expect that there is 268hp hiding under the hood. I have a feeling this will be like the R32 review...if so...its a good thing.

On the track I thought this car might be a "pusher". So I started off easy on it and after a few laps really tried to upset the car. It wasn't having it. There is body roll going on, but just the right amount. When you approach switchbacks the car distributes the weight accordingly. Instead of getting the body roll that continues into under steer, the weight seems to transfer toward the rear. This keeps the nose up and ready for the next command. So far the MazdaSpeed 6 is performing like a champ. Lets see how it does on max speed....

Before I take it onto a road course again, I want to see just how fast I can get this to go. The MS6 has great power in the lower gears (1-4) and plenty of room on the top gears to really wind out the engine. I hit a whopping 163.09 mph with another 1,000rpms til red line. The car remained stable even at such a high speed. Its a slow climb through 5-6th but its still gained ground. Quite impressive for a 4 door sedan. The MS6 is really showing the quality's it has. I think this may be better than the VW R32.

Overall: This car has far more potential than it appears at first look. The weight transfer is predictable and very controllable. This is the perfect car to "trick" the wife into thinking your just getting a family car yet get a car that can fulfill the enthusiast in you. The tires will make some noise but you never feel like the car is going to break traction and keeps delivering power with ease. This has been a great test. I guess it helps going in without high hopes. On a scale of 1-10 (10 being best) ......an 8

note: No heavy PS was used in any of the pics...just brightness and contrast

Great review vr6, I don't think I have even driven that car, but after each of your review, it seems I always go out a try the car you reviewed.

Hey! I just did a update with this car! Coincidence...I think not.
Hehe. J/K

Great write up & awesome pics, I found a new respect for this car after driving it.

Great Reviews. Anymore Comparisions?? I'd love to do a review dang it :) Seems like Fun. Last thing I did even close to this was Judging tuning competitions on Neoseeker. Keep up the good work guys. Another thing I just remembered, a few more months and it'll be 2006. GT1 came out in 1996. Been playin GT for 10 years!! Any anniversary stuff gonna happen on here??

BESTester: PERFECT BALANCE

DEEP FOREST TIME: 1.27.879

First thoughts:
To say the truth, I was surprised by this car as soon as I got to the first turn, I was expecting this car to be like all other american muscle cars, lots of body roll, bad brakes, huge amounts of understeer, and a big heavy chassis. But this car is a whole different story, it doesn't seem at all like a muscle car, it turns great, brakes good, and has no lack of power for those steep hills. At 1,58? kilograms, this thing weighs about as much as a skyline or supra. It oversteers just a little tiny bit when braking, but not enough to slide, in fact, I tried to drift this car and I could not get it to oversteer enough unless I did a huge fient, and then it still didn't drift, it just sort of slid. Think of the slight oversteer as a way to get the car to turn just a little better while braking. Also, it had almost no understeer at all when pressing the throttle. If you nuetral steer, then step on the gas, the change in car behavior is close to none, it just keeps on turning.

Supension:
The mustang is surprisingly stable, not much body roll, and a stiff suspension. The only time the suspension really gets compressed is while braking, where the front goes way down over the front wheels. This just helps with weight transfer, so if you go into a corner too fast, all you have to do is brake and the front grips and you just turn away from the wall, no need to worry about understeer in this situation.

Engine/Transmission:
The engine is pretty good, plenty of torque and horsepower, but a 6,000 rpm red line is something that could be improved. Plus, the big V engine sounds like some kind of tractor at low rpms. I don't really like American V engine's, so I wasn't too pleased with this one, although it is better than the majority of them. The transmission is good, the gear ratio is set at the right place, each gear gives steady acceleration without any really big changes in torque. 2nd or 3rd should be enough to get through most turns quickly and smoothly.

Looks:
I've said before, and I say again, I hate muscle cars, so the boxy shape of this car doesn't please my eye. I didn't really like the old ford mustangs, and this one just seems just like a modern version of it. The lights are better shaped, and the overall body contours are better, but I still don't like it. I aso wish it came with a bigger size wheel. They seem sort of small for a sports car.

Conclusion:
I think this is one of the best american muscle cars ever made, its turns great and has good brakes, but things like the engine and exterior have a long way to go before they get as good as some of the engines around today. If you don't really care about gas prices and saving the enviorment, then this is a great car for you. I think it would make a great drag car, I noticed I could not get the wheels to spin in second gear, so it has loads of grip. Then you could also make it into a track car, but I think it wouldn't be able to stay competitive for long with other cars in its class. But then again, you never know until you try.

dude, very nicely done perfect, sorry i have been neglecting my duty to post in here, tomorrow, i'll have the skyline concept up tomorrow.

I was wondering why this thread was getting neglected....but just assumed it was because you wanted to get BESTuners off the ground.

Looks: The exterior is pretty smooth looking in my opinion. The front looks like a fishÂ… Not too dynamic, but smooth nonetheless. And the light units are so nice! Front- and tail-lights look nice with the exterior. If youÂ’re gonna buy this car, buy it in blue. Further with the exterior, two doors are hidden behind the normal doors, so it looks like a coupe. ThatÂ’s good, but think of the space for the backseatsÂ…

Handling: The car handles pretty well, but it has some kinda slow feeling with the steering. I advise this car for the BESTuners thread. It would be fixed then. The acceleration and the deceleration aren’t that wonderful, and the topspeed ain’t either. But it as grip like a dream, even with S2 tires. No matter what turn you make on the ‘ring, it keeps on the track. But while it has grip, there can be drifted with the RX-8 too. Just make some space to let it understeer. With some tuning the could be one of the best drifters in its class.

Conclusion: When the acceleration or topspeed don’t do it for you, this is the –40,000cr. car to buy. This is a medium car for the average Joe.

BMW 2002 turbo '73

BY: VR6GTI72

Deep Forest : 1.32.425

First Impression: I like the looks of this car. The fender flares, the lack of a chrome bumper in the front, and the not so "in your face" looks. The only thing that hints to the potential of the car are the decals. Heck having turbo 2002 written backwards on the front lip is just telling you to get out of the way and the tasteful stripe down its flanks wraps up the turbo theme. In the looks department this car is all class.

Suspension : I was anxious to see how a car from 1973 stands up to the times from newer on the list so far. So my first stop is on the Deep forest. Out of the gate its moving along great with its 173hp. I wasn't expecting it to break a record, but had high hopes for a good time. I start off swaying the car from left to right, trying to find the "breaking point". I was expecting body roll from a car this old, but its nothing like I was preparing for. There is body roll but its predictable and doesn't seem to get the car off its center of gravity. It handles the turns nicely. Once you find the line on the track, this car will carve up the course. You can get a nice "swaying" going on, as you transfer the weight from turn to turn. Suspension wise this car is on point and gives it good character.

The Power: For a 173hp car this thing moves! I felt like I was doing way better on my track times. On the uphill sections, it didnt struggle. Plenty of grunt to move its weight. The gearing matched the car perfect. A quick downshift and your back in the sweet spot with all the torque the engine can muster. Its great to push your luck in turns. Downshifting seems to straighten up the car. When you do manage to break loose the tires the car stays pretty stable, and is forgiving. So its easy to get back in the groove and turn a good time and boy did I. In the power department, this is another thumbs up.

Overall:
The 2002 turbo is ahead of its time. On paper it looks like a rather bland car, but once you take it out the sum of its components add up to a REALLY fun and trust worthy car. Even in stock form its was able to turn out a time that's far better than expected. Ahead of some cars with almost double the power and not too far behind other strong cars. Fantastic car! I can see why this car has such a following its a drivers car. You feel very connected to the car. The best part is that you actually have fun driving it. I wanted to take it to another track. If you haven't driven this car much, I highly recommend it. Overall on a scale of 1-10 (10 being best) ....an 8

Heres another car on my list of "cars to drive" Every time you make an update, i just have to go and see the car for myself.

Great one vr6.👍
