What are the odds of birth control to really prevent pregnancy? I wonder that when I read the manual that comes with the pills, is it assuming I pull out? Or is it assuming I don't?

If I remember right, on the back of a box of condoms, it doesnt garantee 100% anything, when used correctly. What does that mean? Does it mean pull out? or it doesnt matter?

Basically, do the odds that go on the back of condom boxes, the odds that come with the papers with birth control, or etc, assume that you pull out? or do they assume you dont?

Not trying to be perverted or nasty on these boards, its actually a serious question.

I'm guessing they're referring to intercourse in general regardless if you do or do not pull out.

It's probably a good idea to pull out anyways, what's the point of risking it?

I think the labels are assuming you don't pull out.

Just a story now...
The pill is not 100%.

As my girlfriend quite recently informed me:
A man's swimmers can last for up to 4 or 5, maybe 6 days. If the woman is on her week of sugar pills (placebos) and has an irregularity in her cycle where an egg is released prematurely, and those swimmers are still in there trying to do their thing, it's possible that she can become pregnant.

This recently happened to my girlfriend's best friend and I was confused about how it was possible (which is what brought about the discussion).

So... always wear a rubber. They aren't 100% either, but some redundancy is never a bad thing. You're playing with fire if you don't.

Effectiveness of Various Methods of Birth Control

Method of Birth Control Chance of pregnancy
Birth Control Patch ("The Patch") 5 to 8 out of 100
Birth Control Pill ("The Pill") 5 to 8 out of 100
Birth Control Ring ("The Ring") 5 to 8 out of 100
Female Condom 21 out of 100
Male Condom 15 out of 100
Birth Control Shot 3 out of 100
Diaphragm 16 out of 100
Emergency Contraception 1 to 2 out of 100
IUD Fewer than 1 out of 100
Rhythm Method 25 out of 100
Spermicide 29 out of 100
Withdrawal ("Pulling Out") 27 out of 100
Not Using Any Birth Control 85 out of 100

It's also to cover them legally. If a condom manufacturer says it 100% stop pregnancy, when it's only 99.99%, they'll have a nice law suit when that 0.01% pops out a kid.

I always pull out

Right, I understand that there -are- odds, and sometimes I even know what those specific odds are, but, my question is, are those odds facotring in pulling out, or not?

thanks for the replies and the good info boundary and gashly

Pulling out - why?

Its like spitting food out after chewing it. It's also probably the least reliable method of contraception.

If you are going to have sex and don't want to get your girlfriend pregnant then wear a condom and get her to go on the pill. Belt and braces. If you pull out whilst wearing a condom you risk 'loosing' it whilst pulling out - you might as well not bother wearing one in the first place as far as good safe sex practices go.

The important line is "WHEN USED CORRECTLY".

Sticking the Johnny on your index finger will do exactly nothing. This is not using it correctly. An extreme example perhaps, but it's important to note that you need to put it on right and, just as crucially, take it OFF right.

Without going all Catholic, condoms are 99% effective when used correctly. The Pill is nearly 100% effective when used correctly. Double up and you're looking at odds of less than 1 in 2,000, even during her most fertile times.

Thanks famine but I dont exactly understand your use of, words? I understand that it says using it correctly, but my question is, does using it correctly mean I pull out, or don't?

Don't pull out, you might loosen it... and don't use one condom more than once.

Make sure there are no wrinkles, either, and that it's not too loose (I've never had a loose condom, though... but I've broken a few that were too tight (take that anyway you like... )).

Have you read the instructions? Do the instructions say "For this contraceptive to work, you must also withdraw from coitus"?

I'll bet that they don't. So... why mention it? They probably also don't say that you must wear a hat during the act and only have sex with left-handers...

My reference to Catholicism is a nod to their preferred method of prophylaxy - withdrawal, as you mention:

Using contraceptives "correctly" is simply a case of following the instructions. Condoms - put them on, take them off right. The Pill - take it when you should, other drugs can interfere with it. IUD - err... wear it, replace it when you should.

Dude, for Catholics rhythm method > withdrawal.

Rhythm is okay, as long as your girl is regular... and even then, we nearly have a nervous breakdown every time she's late...

I cannot use Trojan's Ultra Thins because of that same reason. I use the Her Pleasure ones because they are a bit looser. I don't know if there is a scarier moment than pulling out, reaching for the tip, and feeling nothing there.

Just to add a little more insecurity to your nervousness....

the pill is also not trustworthy if the user has a virus. the most common obviously being the cold.

take Cracker's advice. belt and braces!

Yeah, we're running up against the edges of the Bad Taste Zone now. TMI, man.

The only guarantee is abstinence. Don't do it at all if you don't want the partner to be a parent to your child. If you don't mind having a kid with this partner and can support it, but aren't actually planning on one just yet, then use the advice above. But otherwise, just don't risk it. It's not worth it. 3 lives can be screwed up by one night's fun.

How bad is sex-ed in the US

Or sterilisation, or a vasectomy (which includes going back to double check it). If you've had a few kids and realllly don't want anymore then those are the way to go.

What is usually standard procedure? Pull out, dispose, rinse, and repeat?

Take it off right? After you're out of her why does it matter how it's taken off? I don't see the relation a bit.

Well, it won't exactly work if you leave it inside.

I think it's quite obvious you can't take it off while in her.

What is so crucial about taking a condom off? I'm konfused.

Because you need to hold it firmly around yourself while you withdraw to make sure it doesn't slide off. Once you are away from her entirely, then you take it off and dispose of it.

Double glove-ing is not any more reliable than single glove-ing.
In fact, because of the latex rubbing on latex, you are more likely to suffer a "blow-out"

We have six kids and have used most non-abortive types of birth control. (take that any way you like).
One of our kids was concieved while my wife was actively taking The Pill.

If you want 100% chance of NOT conceiving, keep your "powder" dry, keep your "car" out of the "garage", keep your sex play to a "third base" limit.

As for "pulling out" know that almost all men produce a pre-ejaculate that dribbles out during intercourse. It is not as sperm rich as semen, but does contain indeed contain sperm. Making you the next contestant on "You are the baby-daddy!"

Or that new show, "So you think you can father her child?"

Well to be honest I don't know how this turned into a "how to take condoms off" debate, I don't use them.

We use the pill, and I pull out before I finish. I don't mean I pull out after I finish, or after I finish with a condom on, I'm saying I pull out before I am finished.

I hate to get really graphics about it but I think I was misunderstood.

To be more clear, my question is, while she is on the pill mind you, does pulling out before I come descrease the chance of having babies, or does it matter?

And I think Famine did answer the question, but also included condoms in the answer, so I'm not sure if Famine had in mind what I had specifically meant.

I have had one time, where we were drunk, and I finished with a condom on before pulling out, and we kept going, and the condom came off when I removed myself. We freaked out, sobered up, went to the 24 hour walgreens, and got the morning after pill. Scariest night of my life. Learned a lesson too.
