Alright I've been saying I've been going to get a new car forever now. I'm so friggen indecisive when it comes to buying cars. But honestly I really need to start looking because I need to have a car picked out and ready by Feb. 25th. Now you might be saying wait...why the hell Feb. 25th? Well thats the day the warrenty is offically up on my Blazer and I'm not going to bother keeping it past then. Plus I've owned the thing for 3 years, its time to change it up a little.

God I feel like such a n00b doing this

Criteria is as followed.

- The price I'm looking to shoot for is no more then $27k.
- I'm not opposed to any brand, but remember I get the GM discount, so its going to take some convincing me not to go for a GM product. Even though my internship is up in December at GM and I'm not going back, my family still gets the discount with other family members.
- I'm not opposed to type of vehicle with these exceptions...any car is fine as long as it can seat 4, if its a truck is has to be a body on frame, and an SUV must be body on frame and not FWD.
- The vehicle must be new from the dealership, I will NOT drive a used car don't even bother recommend one because I won't care.
- Speed isn't important, handeling isn't important, but hey if there is a car out there right for me with that its cool.

So ya give em some stuff to look at. I got all of next week off so I want something to do, I guess test driving cars will be it.

All with the GM discount in mind:

- that new V8 Impala SS (is it under $27 K with your discount?)
- Grand Prix GXP (the one with the V8--your discount should also put it under $27K I think)
- GTO. GTO!! (those back seats count, right?)

...just a few to kick the discussion off...

Roughly, what is the discount you get??? Is it a set % under dealer cost, or does it differ from car to car??? I have a few suggestions, but the discount price could sway me in different directions.

Hilg

(PS - wtf about the TDI man??? You know you want it.)

Ah jeez I can't even remeber what the discount is, but I know I got a 25 grand Blazer for 18 grand...so whats that? $7,000 off the price. Lets just say knock $5,000 off the price to be safe because I think it varies depeding on the car.

I'm not getting the TDI or any diesel, the price of diesel just won't go down. I think I could get get a semi fuel effiecent car and just learn to drive it right. It's just gas, I just need to bite the bullet and pay for it.

I want to check them out. I have driven the GTO and its certianly something to look at again.

Well, here are my suggestions. These are all over your $27k number, but with your discount, it should be close. So, here's my take.....

1 - GTO / Can't beat the performance for the $$$ really. Just a hair over $30k, and 400hp?? Good looks, good performance, can seat 4 if need be. Winner.

2 - CTS / Depending on which V6 you choose, they are both just a pinch over $30 before discount. And as you've said many times, and I agree, great cars.

3 - Trailblazer SS / Don't know the specifics of the chassis, but those also start at just over $30k. And again, like the GTO, come packin 400hp of LS2 love. Dig it.

Those are my 3 choices for strictly GM vehicles. I have some others if you don't want to stay with them. But, I understand. That discount is like gold. No sense in passing it up.

Everyone is saying Cobalt and Impala....wtf? I thought BX specified RWD.

I'd say the GTO is a fine bet. That, or a CTS or CTS-V.

I don't think he meant no FWD with cars, just the SUVs. I think he was saying that any SUV suggestions had to be RWD. Not front biased AWD type ones that have a transfer case sending power to the back when slippage is detected.

Hilg

(PS - If you get the Trailblazer SS, you could just change your SN to TrailBlazinSS, HA :p )

Offhand, GTO is probably your best bet (unless you want to save gas). If you’re more concerned about gas, a Cobalt SS Supercharged shouldn’t be too bad, and you’ll save a huge handful of money upfront too (it’s what, some eight or nine thousand less than the GTO? – that’s tuition right there!).

Also, by “seat 4”, do you mean “seat 4”, or do you mean “comfortably seat 4”?

The GTO is est. at $35,000 people.... but I'd still sadly, say the GTO as well the CTS as the only GMs worth getting. I preferably the CTS-V in black of course.

I guess the Saturn Aura or Pontiac Torrent

Just for a laugh I'll also say the Solstice, no... Sky and Vibe.

Non-GM...

Charger
Stang
Mazda 3 (prefer 4dr.)
RX-8
EVO IX
350Z (little over)
9-2x
WRX
Legacy
tC
GTI
S40

Non-car...

Escape/tribute
Frontier
Xterra
Toyota FJ Cruiser
Tacoma
Tundra

GM vehicles:
Cobalt SS
Impala SS (the new 303hp V8)
GTO (please god just buy a GTO it's the best GM car out there right now)

Non GM:
Ford Fusion SES (built on a Mazda6 platform)
Ford Five Hundred (a Volvo and AWD nuff said)
Altima SE-R
Mazda6
Subaru Impreza WRX 4dr

I cant think of anything that will top the GTO from GM in that price, so I say GTO.

Otherwise
Cobalt SS
Subaru WRX

Ford Five Hundred, that's a "meh".... the Altima SE-R, now that's niiiice.

As niky said, the Altima is an enticing choice, but the SE-R is borderline on the price. :p

Pretty much any Subaru would fit the bill...reliable, nice cars, with comfortable seating for four.

The Camry or Avalon work, but those cars are zzzzzzz compared to the Subarus. The Prius works too, and it's "quirkier" than the other two. It also helps the environment, of course.

The Passat is always nice, and the new Jetta is even nicer, as long as you don't get the 5-cylinder engine (reported to be a relatively gutless, moaning, lump).

I'd hate to see you end up with wrong-wheel-drive, though...perhaps the Chrysler 300?

Joe,
What's wrong with a year old "pre-owned" vehicle.
A lot of people trade cars every year. My Grand dad used to.
Granted it isn't new. But it's still usually low miles, full warranty, and you save a bunch of money over the employee discount.

As far as GM cars. I'm only partial to the trucks and SUV's. The GTO rocks too.

GTO in a second. Can you change the nose so it looks like a monaro so its not butt ugly though?

I think you can drive them "relatively" efficiently... sort of :scared:... not too bad once they're cruising in top gear with low revs.

4 Aussies can fit in a Monaro reasonably comfortably (but getting in and out is a *****). Dunno if 4 Americans could fit in a GTO comfortably though (no offence intended) :sly:

I'd suggest the GTO, or the Cobalt SS if you are looking for something a bit cheaper. The V8 Impala wouldn't be a bad choice either if you could live with the massive understeer.

Subaru WRX.

Or, if local dealers are doing the 0% financing thing, Mitsubishi Evolution VIII RS. They can be had for sub 25, and interest isn't even a factor! Add a grand or two to get the radio back, and you've got yourself a heckuva awesome car, with good mileage and practicality to boot!

I was also thinking the WRX or EVO. I know they arent GM but they are excellent AWD cars all year round since you live where there will be snow. THey are fast (usually low 13second cars stock), turbo, decent on gas mileage, attractive, accelerate like friggin monsters, off the line they are almost untouchable for a stock car.
If your going to go GM then I also say GTO or a brand new 4 door Grand Prix.

I'd go with the Subie WRX..EVO's are like a fine italian sports car, EXPENSIVE to service AND build quality as well as interior materials are iffy and cheap. The WRX as much nicer interior appointments and has a tight screwed down feeling the mitsu doesn't. Although the EVO would be the choice for the cone courses, I am sure that is not your main intention.

'96 Tahoe with under 70k miles. Rebuild the motor and tranny, throw in an Advanced Adapters Low gear, lift it, throw on some 40'+ tires, toss in some ARB lockers and GO MUDDING! :D

There is one problem with getting a GTO, I can afford the car with no problems but the insurence is going to kill me. I'm looking at close to 500 bucks a month for insurence, plus a car payment close to that, plus gas. Ya I would love to own the car but I can no longer put it under my parents name so for a 20 year old with a clean record it still kinda sucks. 👎

The CTS has the same problem, I can afford the car but not the insurence on the car. 👎

I like the Cobalt SS a lot, its on my to take for a test drive and hammer some numbers out list, along with the Saturn Ion Redline. 👍

The Soltice/Sky would be awesome but I'm going to get married soon and I need something that the wife won't kill me over. Also I plan on having kids so I'm going to want back seats. 👎

I don't like the WRX, I was actually looking at one around the same time I bought my Blazer. For some reason I just didn't like the car all that much, it felt laggy and it seemed small and tight inside. Plus the new ones are ugly as freakin sin. 👎

The new Impala/ Monte Carlo with the V8 is something to look at, its been added to my list to check out. 👍

A Trailblazer SS is something I would just love to own, I mean come on modern Typhoon. The only problem I see is the fuel mileage on the thing 14/19! I mean wow thats aweful, but hey its fast as hell right? I'm still going to look at one. 👍

An Evo is something I can check out, I've never driven one before and I might like it more then the Subaru. 👍

I'm not a Nissan fan in anyway unless its a 350Z but there isn't enough room. 👎

I don't think I get the discount with that and the warrenty isn't nearly as long as I would like it to be.

Alright soooooooo.......

How are Legacey's? I think thats how you spell them, they look bigger then the WRX and more then likely has the same feel to them.

Malibu/G6 with the 3.9L in them? I've driven one very very briefly so I'm wondering if anyone has had a go with them?

Acura RSX? Someone must have driven one on here more then I have, I mean I've taken one for a spin around the block but that's it.

But ya thanks for the help guys, at least I'm starting to think about what I want.

You just told a mini-trucker to build an off road truck....I think I would cry if I did that

Do you get discounts on these too?

Edit: And if you're worried about room, the TSX is the Acura you'd want to try, not the RSX... :)
