Blinking red light of death

I must have the worst luck in the world. While playing GT5:P, my ps3 decided to shut off without warning and proceed to blink red. I tried restarting it but it goes green for about a second then goes yellow and starts blinking red again. I also tried the hard reset in the back but to no avail. What makes this especially crappy is that I just received my replacement DFGT today which went out on me about 2 weeks ago. Has anyone else had this problem with the ps3? How easy was it to get repaired/replaced? What am I going to do about my game saves?

On the bright side I just turned 21 so I guess I'm gonna go get drunk now.

Doesn't a flashing red mean overheating??? Not sure at all but i heard somewhere something about it. I'm sure someone here knows what to do.

Yep, it's dead. Thanks for the help, I swear I used the search for help on the topic. From reading some of the other posts, it seems my ps3 was in the faulty batch that had an extended warranty (Christmas '06 FTW!). I guess my biggest concern now is, when they repair it, do they backup my HDD? Can I still do it before I send it in?

. . . and will I get my copy of GT5:P back when they return my unit, which is stuck in the drive?

You could ask them to do that.
But its not likely they will. They workers at the repair center probably do the same thing all day long and not doing things special for a customer who wants to keep their data. You'd be better off asking if you could keep the hard drive.

or you could hook up an External HD with a FAT 32 file system and backup your PS3 once its done from the repair just restore the back up and you're done :)

Mine's being delivered to my work tomorrow. I've been wondering if it's even going to be the same unit I sent back to them. I guess I'll find out. :D

I hope I get my same unit back. I have one of the 60gb models that still had hardware emulation for ps2 games. They have since discontinued this model.

The 60GB PS3 had the PS2 emotion engine built inside, basicly it was a PS3 with a PS2 stuffed inside it. That's one of the reasons it was so expensive.

I'm still fuming that it's quite obvious this flashing red lights thing is obviously a well known and widespread problem with the '06 60GB PS3s but Sony refuses to acknowledge it outside of extending the warranty on '06 PS3s just 1 month.

They should be fixed for free, like the current disc read error problem on the 40GB is being fixed for free.

First of all this flashing red light is within industry standard (ALL PS3 failures combined are NO MORE THAN 2 -3% which is industry standard.....like it or not, its a fact!)....so NO, Sony should not fix it for free just cos yours broke and your not happy about it.

Second of all the 40GB PS3 only got launched last year!! So all these 40GB consoles with DRE's are getting fixed for free because they are less than 12 months old (under warranty).

As for the OP, yup, its fried, and don't worry you should get a proper 60GB console back! Even tho they dont sell them that doesn't mean they don't still make spares for them in case of a situation such as yours.

Have faith.....im sure you'll be happy when you get a new 60GB, a refurb 60GB OR your very own 60GB back repaired!

To check if you get your own one back write down the serial no. before sending it away, and compare it with the serial no. of the one you get back.

I got my 40GB back, it is the same unit(at least the harddrive is).

Didn't ceiling_fan have a 60GB, and he got 40GB back? Last I read somewhere, he was dealing with Sony Customer Service to get the issue corrected? You should contact the man, see if he had any luck with his warranty exchange(click on his name).

To quell all rumors and misconceptions (Thanks Earth) here are facts about PS3 repair:

1) If your system is repairable, they will fix it and return that same system to you.
2) If your system cannot be repaired, they will send you a new unit, either new or refurbished.
3) If you have a disc stuck in the drive, you can bring this to the attention of Sony, and they will ensure it is returned (I can vouch).
4) It is not a widespread problem. It is a problem among a vocal minority.

Hopefully this can help.

Pay them?? That cost me 420 pounds! i dont know if its under warranty but surely they have to give me one for how much money!! or like house insurance or something!

Well that is your problem if you do not have warranty on it. At least you European PS3 users have the PS3 extended service from Sony.:grumpy:

My PS3 ran out of warranty by now and I'm warranty less(bought in August 2007).

If it cost you £420 then its prob a 60GB which is NOT under warranty.

They will replace it if you pay them £60, it will be replaced at your door.

Your home insurance will not cover it because its hardware failure, not accidental damage or theft!

Best thing to do is pay for continuous play ( http://www.continuousplay.co.uk/ ) from $ony for £5 a month then call them, get them to replace it, and then cancel it or keep it.

At most you will have to pay for 2 months which is only £10! You need to give them 2 weeks notice when you cancel it!

oh ok thanks guys. But will it be a 60gb refurb or what about my game saves im very confuzed! im only 13 so its all a bit complicated and also its annoying as the warranty has just ran out august 11th!!

As far as your memory I don't know if the PS3 has a detachable HDD but when my 360 went dead they said to detach the hard drive and just send the console only. I'd be livid if I lost all my data because of their fault.

It will prob be a refurb, but thats at $onys discretion. As for your game saves, etc make a backup!

Yes you can remove the HDD. They even give you instructions in the manual!

Why do we have to not read the manual?

right thanks so this continunous play, you can just sign up for a month then get it replaced and cancel again isnt that just a bit unfair or i suppose it is a sony company and they have to replace it?
