I have no idea what they are talking about. It is called like blue ray cds what is this or what. Is it like a new kind of cd format or something.

i don't know if i should answer this based on your user title.

blu-ray is a new disc format that can hold immense amounts of data. you could've searched and easily found your answer numerous times.

I don't think it matters much now, since this idiot finally got banned.

Might aswell not let this thread go to waste........

Have you seen how amazingly thin blue ray disks are......sacrificing important (hold the damn thing together so it doesnt shatter) plastic for storage.....do you think the life of such disks will be compromised, will the PS3 spin it slower eitherwise it will start to crack around the centre......

Look you can see right through them! you can probably flex it aswell!

I read that they can make these discs out of corn starch rather than plastic.

They also hold 20 GB on a single layer disc and 40 GB on a dual layer (a la GT4 and San Andreas).

HowStuffWorks
# A single-layer Blu-ray disc, which is roughly the same size as a DVD, can hold up to 27 GB of data -- that's more than two hours of high-definition video or about 13 hours of standard video.

# A double-layer Blu-ray disc can store up to 54 GB, enough to hold about 4.5 hours of high-definition video or more than 20 hours of standard video. And there are even plans in the works to develop a disc with twice that amount of storage.

That's big storage.

It's the thickness of a normal CD I think. It's not very difficult to make a transparent cd. Hell, they bundle them along with every spindle of CDR's I've ever bought. It's just a disk without that reflective coating on it's top.

I heared that given time it would be possible to get 200GB out of a dual layer disk. As for the disk cracking, do you really think they would crack while being spun. If they are thinner, they're denser but as said just above I think they are the same dimensions as a normal CD.

It wil be 6x speed, It sounds slow but the data transfer rate is some 10x more than DVD.

A company has already gotten up to 100gb BD-rom

CDs are semi transparent anyway, hold them up to the light.
I wouldn't worry about the strength of BR disks, they wouldn't waste their time developing something that's going to break.

The data transfer rate of Blu-ray is 72Mb/sec. Common DVD trasfer rate of 16X is 21.6Mb/sec. So, Blu-ray will be much like a 54X DVD recorder. However, this is the new 2x Blu-ray recorders that aren't out yet. Regular transfer rates for Blu-ray is 36Mb/sec. or equal to a 27X DVD.

Blu-ray will hold 25GB standard. Double layered it will hold 50GB. HD-DVD will hold 15GB and 30GB dl. TDK have a 100GD in the works, with a 200GB possible. The laser depth of blue lasers is very small. .1mm compared to DVD lasers 1.mm. So, Blu-ray discs can be made of a lot of different materials. They can even make them out of paper, and will do so to keep Blu-ray disc development costs down.

HD-DVDs and Blu-ray discs will both flood the markets later this year. But in the future, Toshiba and Sony will agree on a single electronic media format that may be compatible with both drivers. This was the "agreement" from the recent rumored meetiing they had a few weeks ago. Again, the "agreement" is just another rumor, but many insiders say it will be revealed later. Both Sony and Toshiba have spent a lot of money to develope their media format of choice, so it would be stupid to not release it now. Same goes for Sony who seem to have the media player best suited for the job of HD playback and recording. But, again, both will wait to see what the public chooses.

Yep, it's BetaMax and VHS all over again. This time, I hope Beta wins. It was better than VHS, but more expensive. That's why VHS won. It was cheaper than Beta, but not better.

I haven't read up on HD-DVD vs. Blu-ray much, but I get the feeling Sony has the upper hand with their Blu-ray this time around. Maybe Playstation 3 will give them an edge, with more distribution.

Personally, I prefered HD-DVD, due to the lower cost(I'm cheap).

You get what you pay for

They've made an eight layer Blu-Ray disc that holds 200 GB. Now that's a lot of storage. I don't know what would require that much space though.
