It's refreshing to come into the thread and see that people aren't fussed about it being cancelled. I was half expecting it to be full of posts about BMW turning into tree-hugging hippies.

Well, they are using GM's hybrid powertrain in some of their newer cars. Oh wait! You're not supposed to know they're from GM...
 
Well, I have to commed them for taking that approach. The M1 probably would have been overshadowed anyways by current products.

According to recent reports BMW is planning to build a new green supercar by 2012. Meant to rival the successful Audi R8 and the upcoming Mercedes SLC, the new supercar will be a pure sports car which will draw heavily on the latest advances in technology and lightweight construction.

The car is expected to a mid-engine design and could potentially be powered by a reworked version of the company’s 3.0 liter engine, instead of the big V8s and V10s of today's BMW M cars. Being a green car means that it would be equipped with fuel saving technologies such as direct injection, brake regeneration and a stop / start system. According to one source the new supercar would have the fuel economy and CO2 emissions of a mid-range 5 series.

The source also indicated that the early design studies were the equivalent of a modern M1, which the company recently paid homage to with the pictured concept.

I see brake regeneration. Does this mean some sort of a hybrid powertrain?

Not necessarily; I think they would have said "hybrid" if it was rumored to be one. I guess it's wishful thinking to hope that it's the same sort of brake recuperation system as on the Audi A4 TDI concept e.

Seems somewhat logical, they co-developed the Two-Mode hybrid system with GM, and I've yet to see them throw it in something.
 
It's either that, or they're talking putting a set of coils on the back and just throw the electricity into heat. Diesel Locomotives have been doing it since the General Motors FT was introduced.

But that seems wasteful. Probably some sort of capacitive hybrid system that dumps all the power out as it leaves a corner.

I agree, it's more likely to be linked in with whatever energy recovery system their F1 car runs with in according to next seasons rules.
 
So the car's electronics would be run off the power from regenerative braking? That wouldn't be too bad.
