Do we really need this? I guess it will compete against the Miata and S2000?
The cover of the latest issue of Germany's AutoBild magazine features an artist's illustration of the forthcoming BMW Z2. While we don't have specific details on the rumor, the Z2 appears to be a small roadster slotted beneath the Z4 range. In May, AutoWeek and AutoCar reported BMW was working on a new roadster called the Z2, in addition to the much-rumored Z6. While it's almost certain a smaller roadster is under consideration at BMW, we suspect it may receive a name other than Z2. As previously noted by Leftlane News, BMW published the names Z1 and Z5 for opposition at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on January 17, 2006. Regardless of its name, the new roadster looks like it will introduce some new styling cues to BMW's design language, including some unusual 3D headlamps. Update: Auto Zeitung is also reporting in its latest issue that BMW is planning a Z2 for the 2009 model year. However, the report suggests a coupe model will also be offered. 4 pot engine with straight six topping the range perhaps?

It should sell, except the Miata and S2000 have advantage of not having a huge badge premium on them.

Props to the artist. That front-end looks SIIIIICK!!!!

I just hope it has a matching rear. To spoil the entire car with the rear would be a travesty.

Looks like nothing more than a shrunken Z4.

Looks great, they should build it. Oh oh oh...I just thought or something. They should make a Z2 coupe and stuff the CSL engine in it and call it the M2. Mmmmmm...

So this is any better than the S2000 and Miata because.....????

Because its a BMW. J/K Well we really cant say its better becuase we have no figures here yet! But you never no a 300 hp v6 in this and for around 30K and it would be amazing!

It's a BMW! It's made by the same people who won World Car of the Year!

Of course it's necessary: it butts up between the Z4 and Mini Convertible, following the time-honored German tradition of filling every available sales gap, whether it exists or not.

But it looks nice, if the actual car ends up resembling that image. A German Miata is an interesting idea, and hasn't been around since the original Z3 (which just stank). If BMW bases this of the current 120i/130i, it should be quite fun, but it may need to go on a diet to compete against even the now-heavier Miata.

I like the front. The BMW badge alone will get it sales, sadly, although it will most likely be a good car.

that looks disproportinately small. smaller wheels, please.

Target Market:

Spoiled rotten 16-18 year old kids with rich parents.

I think the looks are attractive however, if this is really going to be produced. The lights are especially neat, kind of have the new Alfa-look to them.

If they make it with a Coupe, I want it.

Otherwise, the Z4 M Coupe has my heart.

  • It's not a Honda
  • It's not a Ford
  • It's a German car

Don't get me wrong I like the S2000 (even though it's over priced) and of course I love Fords but...anything sporty with a BMW badge takes precedence over those two. Seriously, even the bland 1-series is still a great car dispite being overpriced. People (albeit rich) will buy these cars...and it will sell very well...and be quite a good car. I think the Z4 has too long of a nose or too short of an ass (still looks good), so this being a smaler version of it should be more propotioned. And BMW+smaller=lighter+I6=

I'm not doubting that this is/could be a great car, but at some point BMW has to realise that these smaller, cheaper sports cars have enough redeeming qualities to them to almost make them seem better than a BMW.

...Remember the Z3? Yeah, the over-glorified Miata! The car was great to drive, don't get me wrong, but there wasn't much that made it better than the Miata other than the fact you could get it with the delicious I6. The one I drove was great, but I still prefer the Miata in most circumstances.

BMW could pull it off, as they are a company that can get away with almost whatever it wants. But they also need to prove to the consumer that the extra money they are spending on what may not outperform the cheaper Japanese and American competition is worthwhile.

...But one good thing to come from this would be the possibility of Porsche either doing a sub-Boxster, or having Porsche build one for Vee-Dubya.

That's the kind of front the Z4 should have.

I see Bangle didn't put the mark of Zorro on the flanks of this one. Hmm.

I can't say this is a good idea, as the market the Z3 was in (which the S2000 is not in, because that competes with the larger Z4 and Boxster) is more crowded now than it was when the Z3 was around. And this looks less likeable than the little Z3 was. It could be fast, but I doubt it would be M Roadster fast so as to not steal M Roadster sales.

**** me! I love it.

Edit: Getting second thoughts; while undeniably German, I think there's a bit of the wrong German comming out in it: Audi. Headlights and nose, namely.

Anyone else get that?

Also, if this is truly a lightweight roadster, could it possibly be one to compete against the Elise?

Bangle didn't design that. This is an artists impression of about what it could look like.

It looks like it's biting its bottom lip.

I can't see the point in the Z2 - it will have to be as cheap as the Miata/MX-5 which i can't see BMW doing.

Unless they decide to move the Z4 up a notch or two by dropping the small capacity engines and start the range (Z4) with the 3ltr.

The headlights looks, well... not BMW is all I can say, they need to revise this but apart from this, sounds good. Still wouldn't deter me away from an S2000 though. ;)

Autoblog has info in English:

It’s so 80s that I’m not sure what to think of it (although I do think it looks better than the Z4, especially in back). As the first commenter mentions though, it looks like it’s actually finished – look at how the bumper even has the towing attachment cap.

BMW has apparently put together a prototype lightweight coupe called the Z29. Based on the Z4, the car is said to weight just over 2,500 pounds. It features the same engine as the Z4 M and M3, and is built of aluminum and carbon fiber. 0-62 mph takes around four seconds. Further details remain very sparse, and it's not clear if the car is a project between BMW and a tuner, or if hints to a forthcoming model. We'll keep you posted as this story develops

Meh, its allright. Nothing too special, nothing to make me say "I have to have one!"

I like the overall shape, but the tails, head lights, grill, and wheels kill it for me.

I think it looks mean in the back, as it has good stance, and is generally well designed to bring out the muscular idea in the rear. It does need to be lower and with wider tires, but oterwise it's nice. The rest of the design is tosh though.

I like the rear very much, but the front looks more like a Dodge Charger-esque style than BMW.

I hate the way it looks. Everything is too busy about it, and the details all seem like afterthoughts.

Well, if this is an official prototype; in the car's defense it was styled by Bangle. All of his cars have details added as afterthoughts.
