Hmm harry turtle has made a good point there. I didnt really notice this before but now i do. Cars with the extended lines in front of the front axle are indeed beautiful aka zonda, F40 etc. Cars with the line behind the front axle are ugly like this fugly bmw and the SLR. Whats different with the SLR is that it loooks quite good from some angles. This loosk bad from all angles
The thing is: ugly sells. Not plain jane ugly, like you see on many cheap sales flops, but spectacularly ugly, outrageously ugly.
Cars that defy aesthetic convention often strike a chord with people, as long as they defy the right aesthetic conventions (hence, the Aztek flop). As one designer once noted, more people would buy a car based on unusual looks than those who would not buy said car.
