Just wondering, if during a race I damage my car and the bodywork is also damaged and then pit my car is repaired but the bodywork still looks damaged.
Does this damaged bodywork affect the handling of the car?

Cheers!

As far as I know, suspending a race, exiting the game, and coming back will reset damage, and the damage is only visual, there is no mechanical damage or reduction in aerodynamic ability.

As Hyped says, the damage to bodywork is entirely superficial. It doesn't affect your performance.

I've often thought it would be nice if it did make a difference though.

Ah okay. Yeah if it had an aero affect it would be superb. Okay good to know.
Might as well know that visual damage thing off then as it's rather useless.
Thanks!

It's not completely useless. It serves as a reminder of how lousy a driver you are, all smashing into things and such. And it can make you feel a little better on those rare occasions when you see damage on your car and know that for once none of it is your fault.

I think I have yet to bring a completely clean car into the pits in an endurance race in GT5. There's always at least one stupid moment, or one stupid jerk.

No, the only damage that seems to effect the car is the kind that shows up in red on your monitor. Your car can look like a smooshed up clay figure (RIDICULOUS) and drive just fine.

I like the visible damage OFF setting, because quite frankly, the visible damage looks preposterous, as well as distracting.

^ this is not true, and I noticed grinding Indy way back with version 1.0 that damage to a car or spoiler Will affect your speed and handling.

I drove my ford gt lm racecar around Indy over 100 times have 20,000 miles on this car doing this pre 2.0 and if you clip a wall or bend your spoiler you will no longer be able to hit the same top speeds or lap times. Exit and try again and your back to full speed. It is very minor like 1-2 miles per hour down the Indy straight but it does effect it slightly. Go try

Granted, I can't say about the wing damage.
I don't race many cars with aero.
I've always wondered about that. I mean it SHOULD effect the car. But I have not witnessed it myself.

We turn visual damage OFF in our online rooms to help with frame rate issues with large fields of cars.

I was wondering if that would help... has there been tests? is the difference noticeable?

I've also heard that premium cars are more likely to cause lag issues... is that true? and would it have something to do with visual damage?

Apparently so. I'm going to assume that it's partly due to the more "advanced" visual damage, but it's mostly because the Premiums are simply more detailed.

You can turn the damage to heavy. If you, the damage will affect handling and aerodynamics, until you pit. Same goes for light damage, except the damage mechanical damage will go away eventually.

Yes it does, at least on heavy and in arcade, I managed to ram the entrance to the pits on High Speed Ring with a Zonda and it drove very peculiarly afterwards.

I tend to run with damage off as often AI drivers will smash you into the scenery with gay abandon especially if you squeeze past them in a corner and are back on the racing line at the exit. They tend to blindly keep to the line even if you are in the way and off you go. Do that in an online race and you'll end up booted.

Great feedback folks.
You see the thing is, if you run with damage on heavy and then pit the car will be repaired, however any visual damage on the car will remain. So it's that point I'm curious about - to know if the 'visual damage' is purely there for looks or has an aero effect.
I may just do some testing to find out.
Thanks all.

On a similar note, having a door hanging off effects handling, top speed and acceleration, and pulls the car off to one side all quite heavily, even if mechanical damage is turned off.

If you can manage to slam the door back shut (or as much as possible) ot tear it off completely, then the car performs much better. So it does appear to have an aerodynamic affect.

It's such a shame that only the rally cars and the premium Mine's Skyline are affected in this way, as this makes things very interesting when battling online.
