Bond back in action

I've heard that SKYFALL (assuming it is the title) makes sense within the context of the film, the way THUNDERBALL, MOONRAKER and OCTOPUSSY do. It could be worse - the last three Bond films have all been rumoured to be called "Beyond The Ice" (which has led to a running joke on fan forums).

Anyway, EON Productions has a press conference scheduled for November to make the start of filming. Traditionally, they like to use it to reveal the title, cast and plot details (CASINO ROYALE was the exception, because they said from the outset that they were going to adapt it). With that in mind, this is what we know so far:
- Daniel Craig will return as James Bond, and he's been talking a lot about how they want to use the film to head back towards the "traditional" elements.
- Sam Memdes (who worked with Craig on ROAD TO PERDITION) is directing, and apparently wants nothing less than to make the best film in the franchise history.
- Peter Morgan (FROST/NIXON and THE QUEEN) was originally commissioned two write the film. He was later replaced by John Logan (who rewrote GLADIATOR extensively), but said that his central idea still formed the basis of the plot. He called this idea "shocking".
- John Logan later made comments that implied a reimagined version of Ernst Stavro Blofeld could be reintroduced.
- Javier Bardem has confirmed his involvement. When he was first offered the role some time around March-April, he said he would only do so if the script was interesting and if he would play something other than a "typical Bond villain".
- Ralph Fiennes (Lord Voldemort in HARRY POTTER) has been approached, with a "darkly complex" role in mind. Apparently EON decided early on that they needed a very talented actor to be able to play the role. Logan's comments that Blofeld may be in the film have given rise to the suggestion that Fiennes will be Blofeld. Although widely reported as being in the film, Fiennes is yet to confirm his involvement.
- Similarly, Naomie Harris (PIRATES OF THE CARRIBEAN and 28 DAYS LATER) is being reported as having been cast in the film, with popular consensus being that she will play Miss Moneypenny. Harris has confirmed that she has met with the producers, but nothing more (EON have a very strict policy of not talking about details of the film until they give permission).
- The tabloids have also reported that Helen McCrory (Narcissa Malfoy in the HARRY POTTER films) has also been cast, and that the lead Bond girl will be French actress Berenice Marlohe. However, Marlohe has virtually no credits to her name - aside from a few appearances on French television and a Dacia commercial (!), so people are sceptical.
- After EON decided not to film in India, they are believed to be heading to South Africa.
- Istanbul's Sultanhamet Square (the Hippodrome at Constantinople) and the waterfront at the entrance to the Bosphoros will also be used for filming, with scenes apparently making up the first fifteen minutes of the film.
- Castle Duntrune in Argyll, Scotland, will be the setting for the finale of the film. According to one of the owners, the castle will allegedly be "Bond's ancestral home" and he will "bring all the villains together there"; however, these comments are almost identical from some that came months ago when news of location-scouting in Scotland first broke. It appears Patricia Malcolm, one of the owners of Castle Duntrune, did some independent research after EON came looking at the castle, and since EON is not in the business of giving away plot details, the suggestion that Bond's family once lived here appears to be misleading. The actual scenes at the castle are said to involve an attack from land and sea with plenty of gunfire and explosions (this is more credible; in order to obtain permission, EON would have to explain what they wanted to do), suggesting that Bond may be leading an attacking force against the castle (similar to the climax of GOLDFINGER, THUNDERBALL, MOONRAKER and so on).
- Adele dropped hints on "The Jonathan Ross Show" suggesting that she will be recording the title theme, and is the fan favourite for the gig (she is one of the few performers who could reasonably perform a song in the style of Shirley Bassey without sending too much like a Bassey pastiche). However, rock band You Me At Six have also said that they will be writing one. It appears that EON have not approached one performer, but put out an open call for demo tapes, as they did with QUANTUM OF SOLACE.
And that's pretty much everything we know.

Seeing as the metal gear film was cancelled, I'd like to see them steal some MG style with some plot twists and infiltration stuff, as long as it's obvious enough they can't deny it (even though they have to).
Currently the closest thing to a metal gear film is Where Eagles Dare, and that was before MG came out lol.

I seriously doubt Bond will take cues from METAL GEAR. That's not their style.
It's being reported that the first scenes to be shot will be a car chase centred on the Smithfield Meat and Poultry Markets in London (ever since Daniel Craig was cast as Bond, they like to start the shooting schedule with action sequence). Bond will apparently change cars twice during this sequence, driving a Jaguar and a Range Rover. The producers appear to be going for a THE FRENCH CONNECTION vibe, possibly adapting a scene from Moonraker (the novel) where Bond is chasing the villain in an under-powered car and must anticipate where he is going and find shortcuts to stay in touch with him.

But this is being reported by The Sun, so take it with a cellar of salt.

I see you don't really understand the character that much. The series has changed a lot since Daniel Craig was cast in the role - and the likes of Fiennes and Bardem have said they would only be interested in appearing in the film if the roles on offer were more than your typical Bond villains. Since Bardem is in, I think it's safe to say BOND 23/SKYFALL will be new ground for the series.

From all of the intel above, I'm hyped for this now! Films have been moving away from the cliche to a much deeper plot and continuing themes. From the sounds of things though, they have achieved the "break the cliche" phase and are now looking to go a level further with a challenging film and groundbreaker for the franchise. I hope this isn't wrong!

Adele + You me at six = Alicia Keys + Jack White?

Adele and You Me At Six won't be collaborating together. They are simply submitting demo tapes. The way EON approach the title theme is like this: they will either ask an artists directly (as they did with Madonna), or they will open themselves to demo tapes from interested artists (which they did with Jack White). The BOND 23 theme will be decided by the latter. Adele and You Me At Six will submit their demo tapes (as will any other artists who are interested), but only one of them will do the actual theme.

Interesting Bond trivia related to that: the theme from Goldeneye was written by Bono and the Edge, of U2 fame, and the submitted demo is out there on the internet with Bono doing his best Tina Turner impression.

A very bizarre demo listen, for sure.

GOLDENEYE was a funny song in that EON knew they wanted Tina Turner for the title theme, but they didn't actually have a song for her. So they opened up the demo tape process, looking for songwriters. Bono sang it the way he imagined Turner would so that the producers could better-envision the final version of the song.

Nicole Sureidbangher did a cover version of it for the 2010 remake of the game. And it sucked. She tried waaaay too hard to be Tina Turner, and in the end, Bono actually did a better imitation.

Pardon the triple-post, but the press conference is under way. The title of the film will be SKYFALL, while Daniel Craig will be joined by Javier Bardem as a villain who was unnamed, Ralph Fiennes as a villain whose name cannot be revealed, and Naomie Harris and Berenice Marlohe as Eve (a field agent) and Severin respectively, the Bond Girls. Ben Whishaw and Albert Finney are also in the film, again in unnamed roles.

The plot will apparently revolve around an attack on MI6 that leaves Bond questioning M's past.

Ah-ha. I've heard that joke at least a hundred times since the SKYFALL domain registries were first discovered in August.

Breaking news: Ben Whishaw has been outed by his agent that he will play Q in SKYFALL. Whishaw is 12 years younger than Craig, and will be the youngest Q in franchise history.

About time they brought back Q Branch. I really like the darkness of the Craig era Bond. But there still needs to be those quirky stuff like Q Branch that the fans all know and love.

"I did some maths" - Jeremy Clarkson

Here is some fun facts:

1. The First James Bond film, Dr. No, started filming January 16th, 1962, fifty years ago, this past Sunday.

2. With the upcoming release of Skyfall, the 23rd James Bond film, the average timeframe that a James Bond film is released is one film every (about) 21 months.

3. The gap between Bond 22 and Skyfall is the longest gap between Bond films that share the same actor.

Fun time over, a few bits of news to share with you today(Source: MI6HQ.com):

1. EON confirmed that Thomas Newman will compose the score for Skyfall. Whether or not he replaces David Arnold as the series composer remains to be seen.

2. Apparently there were rumors floating around that Naomie Harris was being primed to play Miss Moneypenny. Well, the actress put those rumors to bed once and for all saying, "The idea of me being Moneypenny was a good, racy rumour. But Eve is not remotely office-bound. She gets to see plenty of action. That meant a lot of gun training."

She continues by saying, "I’m such a pacifist that I never thought I’d be excited about guns, but I absolutely loved it. The weapons training I’d done on Miami Vice was with real bullets, but this time I was shooting blanks. I did two hours three times a week for three months, mostly working with a Walther PPK, a very light, very beautiful, ladylike gun."

3. Three Bond directors, John Glen, Michael Apted and Martin Campbell have formally announced the Bond 50th anniversary collection. All 22 Bond films will be made available on Blu-ray for the first time in franchise history in this glorious collection. The collection is due out October 1, and you can preorder from amazon.

It's more than that - the cast of SKYFALL was officially announced on November 3rd, fifty years to the day since Sean Connery was announced as the first James Bond.

1. EON confirmed that Thomas Newman will compose the score for Skyfall. Whether or not he replaces David Arnold as the series composer remains to be seen.
Newman will probably just do SKYFALL. He got the job because of his close association with Sam Mendes - Newman has scored every Mendes film to date, and according to Arnold, Mendes wanted to continue that trend with SKYFALL. Unless Mendes returns for BOND 24, Arnold will probably return to the series.

2. Apparently there were rumors floating around that Naomie Harris was being primed to play Miss Moneypenny.
That was The Daily Mail being The Daily Mail. They were insisting that she will be Moneypenny, and have been doing so since the November press junket (in fact, Baz Bamigboye, The Daily Fail's reporter at the conference, pushed the entire event off its axis when he kept trying to bait Harris into admitting she was Moneypenny, and so very little actual information about the film was revealed). The interview with Harris where she says she is not Moneypenny was published in the Fail's Sunday supplment, Live. One suspects that The Daily Mail have known she is not Moneypenny all along, and are beginning to sow the seeds to do an about-face.

Speking of nasty tabloidishness, The Mirror - who have long hated Bond in general and Daniel Craig in particular (mostly because he doesn't think much of them) - have been claiming that the film's budget has been slashed, and that international locations inclusing China, Bali and India have all been canned with filming taking place in Bognor Regis instead. This story went viral, with the likes of The Evening Standard and The Times of India re-posting it, but it's patently untrue: for one, Daniel Craig is currently in Shanghai for filming; two, Bali was never planned to appear in the film at all; three, India was scrapped months ago; and four, the local government in Bognor Regis has not received a request for filming permission from SKYFALL..

Oh. I don't really keep track of British tabloids, so I didn't get a clear understanding of where the source came from. Disregard.

The tabloids love it when a new Bond film is in production. It's a sure-fire money-spinner for them. Bond films come around like clockwork (usually), and since some of the roles - like the female lead and the villain - are so highliy-coveted, the tabloids are always running stories about which actors will be in which roles (and they're usually helped along by the time-honoured tradition of aspiring actors announcing they are talking to the producers about a role in order to score some free publicity from the press). There is no shortage of stories to be had, and they frequently a) go to war with one another over it (production of QUANTUM OF SOLACE saw two tabloids backing two different artists for the title them; in the end, neither was right), or b) just make stuff up and push it as far as they think they can make it go (according to The Mirror, a labour strike in Colon was actually a gang war in Panama City that filming of QUANTUM OF SOLACE not only got caught up in, but started).

Basically, 90% of the rumours you hear about a Bond film are utter BS.

Oh, I was wrong about my one film every 21 months guess a couple of days ago. I did it with a calculator using the formula (12x50)/23 and it comes out to 26 months for every one Bond film, okay, 26.0869565217 months to be exact, but I was close for doing that calculation off the top of my head.

Every Friday, production releases a clapperboard shot from a scene that has been filmed at some point during the week. These are the shots, in the order that their scenes appear in the film (rather than the order they were released in):

Party time

According to several press releases obtained by MI6-HQ.com, all six actors who have played James Bond will be together in one party to celebrate Bond's 50th year on film. The last time multiple Bonds got together was when George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton and Pierce Brosnan celebrated Bond turning 40 at the Royal premier of 'Die Another Day'.

The gentlemen will be joined by several Bond girls that appeared over the years including Ursula Andress and Eva Green.

The party will be the climax of what MGM calls, “a whole year of birthday celebrations for 007 in the movies.” It will also be held after the premier of Skyfall on October 23.

Daniel Craig said: “It’s an astonishing record for any character to endure for five decades in showbiz but I’ll bet this: the franchise is such a phenomenon that in another 50 years time a whole new bunch of actors and their leading ladies will be gathering for another party when James Bond becomes a centenarian.”

This is so sad. I liked Craig alot as the new bond. I was hoping to see him in more bond films because after Casino Royal i was astonished.

Can anyone read Chinese? Could be a small clue in there.
Apparently it's too cut-off to be able to read properly.

However, the current theory among fans is that this is some kind of private equity or venture capital firm located in a skyscraper in Shanghai which may be a front for Chinese intelligence.
Of course, that's just a theory.

... Huh? Craig is still Bond. He's filming SKYFALL as we speak.

Well of course he is. The only person who played bond as well was Connery. (Well accordingly with the novels)
