How many "F's" can you see in the following text. Post your results. Answer to follow.

FINISHED FILES ARE THE
RESULT OF YEARS OF SCIENTIFIC
STUDY COMBINED WITH THE
EXPERIENCE OF YEARS

I think this only works on some people. Sometimes the brain cannot recognise the letter "F" in the word "OF". First time I did this I only saw three.

Yeah, it's pretty old, first time I heard it/read it I was tricked but no longer

I think your brain becomes immune to it once you realise you haven't counted the "F's" in "OF"

In other words you do something that all humans do, learn! Specifically from your mistakes :sly:

Like others I saw something similar years ago, so I dont fall for it anymore.:)

There are significant quantities of psychological research that show that function words (and, of, with etc) are almost skipped by the reading mechanism. Their presence is usually inferred by the context. However, they are read, and their presence can be pulled from short-term visual working memory if the context is ambiguous (i.e. if the sentence does not parse correctly).

The test is made harder by the use of all-caps, which removes shape information from the words. However, the test is made easier by the presence of the question prior to the text. It prepares the brain for the test, and so the reading mechanism is altered ("primed") by the new requirement (over standard comprehension). The test would be harder if you said "Read this: <passage>, <test>".

If you're really interested in this, you should read "Visual Cognition" (Humphreys/Bruce), and "Visual Perception" (Bruce/Green).

I'll keep an eye out for them. Sounds interesting.

Asking the question does make it easier, but there's really no way to know how many F's you counted without asking it. You're damned if you do and damned if you don't...

Are you aware, sir, that your signature is too long? unless the passage in the middle has been smallified, then it's just fine.

Me, telling off a moderator!

I noticed the 6 line sig rule isnt enforced much anymore. Sorry for being off topic.

I've lost count how many times I've read that passage this year...

Some more fun for you - name three fish that begin and end with the letter "K" (no sneaky Latin names - otherwise you'll be able to get 14).

I've heard this before but I can't remember what it is. Does it have something to do with Scotland by any chance?

I shall say no more.

I'll see what people come up with first.
