I nearly bought a 120Y as my first car in Australia. Let's say, it had character. What a great little category that is.
The first race looked to be a one make spec class for the Sunny liftback.
The Sunny replaced the B210 120Y in Australia, and i haven't seen one of those in well over 30 years.
The Sunny liftback is so much better looking than the visually challenging B210 coupe/liftback.
I remember the Sunny was on my short-list for my 1st car in the mid/late 80s.
Datsuns were incredibly popular and so cheap to 'hot rod' with parts interchangeability from other Datsuns.
Tsukuba would be pretty much ideal for a class with that level of performance, but oh my hat! What is with the music being fed through the PA while there is commentary and a race going on?
Parked ona dead end street, the body was one colour and it had some generic 5(maybe)x13 Cragar-type dog dish alloys. Two deflating right side tyres, dusty black interior with a an old school three-spoke wheel.
I knocked on a couple doors and a dude that looked like Jack Sparrow answered the door(Y'all know I tell lots of stories, but I ain't exaggerating'!). Asked if the 120Y was his. He says yes and asked if he'd like to sell it.
I think I caught him mid puff or mid exhale as he didn't know what to say. Them He blinked a few times and was like I don't know, man. I gave him my number and told him to ring if he changes his mind.
I literally walked a couple blocks away to a car yard and in the back corner was the yellow(Toyota beige) '83 Corona S I wound up buying.
A few days later, Cap'n Jack rings me and wanted to sell the car to me. Said sorry and had bought a car already. He asked what I got. Told him and he asked how much. Told him $1000. I could hear his eyes boggle and the "Damn." in his voice, from the money he could have made.
