Bring back realistic engine tuning!

If they made it an option for realistic or standard tuning, they would become far more popular than if they just offered one type.

I just booted up Kaido Racer 2 again.

And one thing I like about Kaido's ECU/ROM engine tuning, apart from the scalable power/torque graph, is that you can adjust where you want peak torque to occur. Right now I don't have the expensive parts for my AE85 so I can't adjust it more than 500rpm either way, but I assume once I get better equipment I will be able to do more.

It also shows the before and after curves overlayed onto each other.
You can also save different ECU maps and switch between them

On the left side of the graph - you have your engine tune level packages and turbo types you can select and immediately see the graph change to match. Makes it easy to mix and match and get exactly what your after

With the graph screen still showing, you can also bring up parts at the bottom and see what effect they have on the power/torque curve when you enable/disable. In the game there are different manufacturers of the same parts and their not all the same.
You can snapshot a combination of parts to comapre to another, very handy.

All things GT5 could use

Do you think engine modifications make any difference to the sound of the car itself?

The addition of the Sports, Titanium Semi-Racing, Titanium Racing Mufflers and Catalyzers on any vehicle would make a difference..

In real life any change to the camshaft timings, engine compression, induction system, or even spark advance, air/fuel ratio, etc, will change the engine sound in a way or another. However I doubt this will be implemented in GT5.

Ha! Sounds just like something I (and others?) described in this thread before. It seems most of my "ideas" have been thought of before and already implemented :grumpy: 💡 :D

Sounds great to me! ;)

Can you get Kaido Racer 2 on pc? im curious to give it a go :)

It's only available for the PS2. In the US it was called "Tokyo Extreme Racer Drift 2", which apparently works no problem in PCSX2. It's just a case of getting hold of a copy of the game; there's a few on eBay, and Amazon's "affiliates" stock it. Can you tell I'm after it too? :p

Before anyone says anything, my PS2's had it. It only intermittently plays games. There's a problem with the "radial" actuator for the laser carrier; the plastic pin that sits in the "screw" drive is worn, and so the DVD-Drive has dodgy "tracking". I've repaired it twice, but it's only served to accelerate the wear on the pin...

I wish you luck sir on trying to acquire that game :P i on the other hand have no money, and i've tried using PCSX2 before and failed miserably! i think a tutorial is needed for me.

With tech the way it is now, cant you pick up the slack? eg two variable geometry turbos, one large and one small, to get good torque and higher horsepower? Mods of the like, meaning GT needs to go more in depth with the variance and number of modifications applicable to any given machine as well as a more detailed description of exactly it is thats supposed to be being done for some not so simple modifications. Or maybe someone here can straighten me out.

Another thing about ECU tuning, you can have different maps, after getting the right parts off course, for qualifying - more power, greater fuel consumption, and for endurance racing, less power, better reliabiity and less fuel consumption etc

Instead of just just, more power ROM upgrade. In the real world, if your using something like Motec, you would have to retune the ECU maps for every part combination, and where you want the most power, balance between fuel octane rating and consumption etc

I've always assumed that after each change in Gran Turismo the ECU is reprogrammed (or carburator retuned) for the "optimal" power output, and that the "ECU part" was an upgrade with a more advanced model which gives a little bit more room for improvements, however I agree too that that part should do more, like for example adding options for tweaking engine parameters by the player (rev limiter, VTEC/VVT timing if available, spark/turbo/fuel maps - but probably this should have to be done with several fixed presets or it would get too complicated - etc.).

Well here's an idea for GT (though I don't see it happening in the near future) have both. Presets for people who arent used to it and in depth technicalities for people who are. Unless you mean from a game development perspective, then yea, its complicated.

i want different flywheels, i want carbon prop shafts, overbore and stuff!!

blown engines after milage and engine rebuild would be good too...

While there is lightweight flywheels, carbon driveshafts, and an increase in displacement in most engines, those are taken care off. However, I wish there was an engine rebuild because cars that are used don't have the same hp rating as they did when they were low mileage, and finding some cars with low miles is really hard

Engine rebuild, replacement or swap would be nice.

Definitely. You could do a replacement in TXR3 I believe.. And to add

In TXR Drift 2 you can adjust the ECU tuning by sliding the thing left or right, for lower end hp/tq or high hp/tq. It was limited by ECU Stage 1/2/3/4/5

finding some cars with low miles is really hard
But it's half the fun. If they had an engine rebuild option then the game would be more money based. I liked how you have to find the 6.2 or 0 mileage cars.

I voted more realistic than GT1/2.

I loved having to completley redoo your gearing as a result of engine tuning. It's the fine tuning that keeps me comming back for more. I want as much of it as possible for sure.

So I was going through the screens again yesterday, and I noticed how they show us in depth of the tuning

And under the GT Auto menu there is these off shoot tuning options. I think they made it more generalized, not having to go to each individual dealer to buy upgrades, but it's all in one area, instead. Although there aren't options for all these things (there is an engine tuning option, but there are no tire option, exhaust option, etc)

Has anybody noticed that in GT1 and GT2 engine tuning was far more realistic than in newer games in the franchise?

...

In GT3 and 4 PD for some reason simplified everything. Most cars (there were very few exceptions) with tuning just gained power and torque more and more, with no drawback.
Really. I want it like it was in GT2. If it's like in GT3-4 I'll be very disappointed.

If engine tuning options were in depth enough it would make endurance racing a lot more interesting! How far do you go with the tuning to make your engine last? What about mileage, take a hit on power for a few more laps between fuel stops? :)

By the way, the screenshots above (not counting the first one) are from "GT Auto", but in the latest screenshots of the "My Home" screen, a "Parts Shop" section can be seen.

There is also this picture, which shows GT Auto and Tuning Shop together.
Interestingly, Tuning Shop wasn't on any previous My Home "concept shots", and the pictures of tuning you posted clearly show GTAuto in the top-left corner.

So something changed! There is a lot that hasn't been shown yet: more tyres, drivetrain stuff, intake stuff, forced-induction, brakes etc.

The shots are probably still just teasers :indiff:

EDIT: beaten to it...

Tuning the engine and ecu is a whole other story of the tuning process. I'm sure it's far to complex for the average person to even comprehend if GT5 had it. My friend and I were discussing the body kits, but that would also mean changing the physics of how the car would feel and such.

Those "tune-up" pictures look great though :D

Could it be that in "GTauto" section you make the tweaking of the car and in "Tuning shop" you buy the different parts?

Yes, but the screens have GT Auto in the top left corner. Unless it's not necessarily from GT Auto, and is just 'GT Auto brand' parts

I hope upgrades for more expensive cars are more expensive and upgrades for cheaper cars are cheaper. Obviously with good balance. Seems like 4k for a hood is a bit much for a Focus. My buddy got a Sebon for his Accord EXR for like 1 or 2k
