We are at war, with a new kind of enemy. The terrorists have infiltrated every nation on our planet. Our nuclear weapons are a target that's wide open to attack. The cold war is over; are we still in situation where we must invest billions upon billions into a system that puts our citizens at risk? NO! We must adapt to the evolving world in order to survive!

I stopped reading after this paragraph, 'we must adapt' ie. eliminate nuclear programs, why? Because terrorists might infiltrate them. That reminds me of drawing silly cartoons lol.

I hate to play devil's advocate (I did like your post!) but this reminds me of the state of medicine at the moment.

One lecture mentioned that we now advise people to limit their sugar intake. The lecturer, a doctor specialising in biochemistry told us there is no conclusive evidence that there is any need for the government to give such a recommendation, and that she required more convincing before she would get on board with the message.

Isn't government health advice a crapshoot anyway? For example, the five a day campaign is only so because the WHO recommends 400g a day; depends what you eat and how much, not necessarily 'how many'.

Same goes for alcohol units; RAs are higher in other countries (Australia) and lower in others (Finland). Even then, each country differently decides just how much one 'unit' of alcohol is.

The five a day thing was because it was deemed the maximum that they could convince us to eat. Other countries apparently have a variety of different limits.

But then I did get that off a TV show so it may be BS.

I watch QI as well but the 5 A Day campaign is a WHO thing as far as I am aware, not strictly a government creation.

My own GP is much stricter, their diet sheets point out that fructose is worse for you than sucrose (and fructose is an appetite booster) so they like to recommend 4 veg 1 fruit.

I consider pasta and beer to be vegetables, so I'm okay.
 
I'm staying clear of Tory Britain for the time being. What's the chances they'll go after the likes of VPNs next?
 
I'm sure the Brits here know the case (for everyone else, here is a link), but can someone please explain why Thomas Cook is at fault? Were they somehow supposed to be monitoring the maintenance of the resort?
Does that imply that I can blame a car manufacturer if I get a poorly maintained car off a rental company which causes a crash?

As I understand it Thomas Cook (the package agent) provided the accommodation as part of an complete holiday package (package holidays are a popular concept in Europe). If the plane had crashed (often a Boeing with Thomas Cook) they'd also be liable, not Boeing.

Part of the (apparent) public distaste centres on Thomas Cook receiving several million in compensation and failing to apologise (probably for legal reasons) to the family until the public/press turned nasty.

Because it was a package holiday. Basically a kind of insurance scheme in way of the travel agent sets everything up. If something goes wrong in your holiday you go to the travel agent to complain.
 
Couldn't you have kept something like that in the Rumble Strip? If there's an actual debate on who is to go on the score, I suggest Gladstone.
 
Jane Austin going on the Ayrton is already thrilling debate amongst us notaphiles. Is it patronising that at least one woman seemingly 'must' go on one of the banknotes or is it important to remember women's history?

It was petrol in the furnace when it was suggested Thatcher should go on one of them.

Incidentally, for anyone complaining about only men being on banknotes, there's been a woman on all the banknotes for over 60 years.

She was also pm when coal mines became "mining museums" , steelworks closed to make way for retail parks & the communities they supported became ghost towns. Meanwhile her pals in the city of London got richer & richer.
