Bugatti will launch a new $1.9 million version of its Veyron supercar in 2008, according to a published report. The so-called Veyron Targa will receive a glass roof engineered by Webasto — the same German firm responsible for the folding roof on the Volkswagen Eos, according to Edmunds. Unlike the Porsche 911 Targa — which has a glass roof that retracts and is stowed onboard — the Veyron's roof panel will have to be removed by hand and kept in the garage.

The reason for this shortcoming is the Veyron's tightly packed design, which leaves no room to store the panel. To compensate, the car will offer an expandable fabric cover that will slide in place of the glass and shield the interior from the elements.

The report seems to suggests that, unlike the Porsche 911 Targa, the Bugatti will have no structural member connecting the windscreen to the pseudo c-pillar/roll-bar. Consequently, reinforcements will be added to the windscreen to maintain rollover safety, and other changes will be made to the underbody to maintain torsional stiffness.

Bugatti will make up for the added weight by giving the car a carbon hood and doors — bringing the weight back to down to the coupe's level. While acceleration figures should remain unchanged, top speed will be electronically limited to 217 mph for safety reasons. The aerodynamics of the Targa model will not be suitable for the car's regular top speed of 250 mph, the report said.

Wow, that is all pretty outrageous. I really don't see why this car is necessary in any sense of the word, are Bugatti customers actually demanding it?

For the extra $650,000 I think your money would be better spent elsewhere. If you are that concerned about buying a high-speed, high-lux convertable, I'm sure VAG would be happy to supply you with a Bentley Continental GTC, hell maybe even two for that price...

I don't think they would have built this if there was no interest, but it will also help recoup some of the development costs of the Veyron.

At least someone won't get sucked out of the roof opening like an ant through a 250 mph vacuum cleaner.

Still, very absurd, probably uglifies it even more.

Still, 217 MPH with the glass top would be kinda cool. But the car is still too outrageous. For the extra money, I just cannot validate the purchase.

It's all about demand really. They have already limited production of the Veyron, so to satisfy the demand they needed to come up with a variation. I think all the planned Veyrons are spoken for and I am sure this one will sell out fast too. Keep in mind that the people buying these cars don't live in the same universe as we do. So while we see it as rediculous to pay 600k more for the targa they see it as normal. It's about exclusivity, collectability, and all that jazz. These people don't buy cars because it makes sense.

Can you vallidate spending £800+ grand on any car. The only remotely close to valid excuse is the people who earn that in a week so their concept of monetary value has collapsed and anything less than £10,000 is a meaningless sum.

I fail to see the rationale in the purchase of anything slower than the coupe Veyron, and still costs $600,000 more. I mean if I had the money, and there was an unclaimed Veyron, I'd get that AND THEN buy a Carrera GT, and thenlaugh at the people with the slower Veyron who just spent $200,000 more than me. As I now have the fastest production car in the world, and another car that can do 200+ with the roof missing as well.

$1.25 Million on the 253MPH Veyron? Yes, I can see that being worth of my imaginary money. But throwing another $600K on top giving me a car that is slower and may not perform as well isn't worth it. As STL pointed out above, you could pick yourself up a Carrera GT, or hell the SLR Convertable and still be able to scratch 200 MPH. And even then, you would still have nearly $300K to play with.

...May as well build a new full-size garage with that extra money...

His point was a valid one though, and you sort of missed it - he's saying these people have so much money, they really don't care about the premium over the standard model, as these sums of money don't have anywhere near the same meaning to them as they do to us. We see this as ridiculous (I don't, but you do and with good reason) while they see it as just another purchase, essentially.

I mean YSSMAN, you're talking about people with $10 million airplanes, $50 million homes, $100 million salaries - do you really think they're going to care about that $400,000? And yes the car is marginally slower but, one, we're talking about 220mph instead of 250 while I was proud that I got up to 130 this weekend, and two, "top end" is not the reason you buy a Veyron.

A Veyron is utterly, completely anonymous without the big numbers. Take away the big numbers and what is it? Just another supercar, whose only distinction is being the most expensive production convertible in the world...

No scratch that, this is:

Five million dollars up-front... and he still didn't want to sell it... sold another for three million, though.

But for that much money? Give me a Zonda. Still looks outrageous... and with that much change, I can have the interior metals and rims plated in white gold. Heck, I can have gold strands sewn into the carbon fiber, too... And with the change? I can buy a couple of Ferraris, Lambos and maybe make a downpayment on a McLaren F1... maybe.

Coolest? Debatable. I personally think the coolest car every manufactured was the VW Beetle... first edition.

Fastest, most powerful and most ridiculously expensive? Hell, yes. So far...

That's why Gordon Murray always tries to downplay the top speed record the McLaren F1 took, because he knew, eventually, that something would go faster. Of course, he's one of the biggest Veyron haters of all, so his opinion should be taken with a grain of salt.

You guys are so mean to poor little Veyron when all it ever did was be the coolest car ever manufactured... :(

Yes, even bring up the name Veyron around John and he starts his any Veyron rants.

From my super-secret collection of McLaren F1 pictures:

A review of the Veyron by none other than Gordon Murray

I've got that issue of TopGear, his review wasn't all that great imo, he hept talking about the F1, and making out that the F1 was the perfect car. I mean yah, he has reason to be proud of building the F1, but he wasn't reviewing the F1, nor was he reviewing a car that was built to be the same type of car as the F1.

Murray also did a design/engineering analysis article for Road & Track here in the States a while ago, and it seemed pretty objective to me...

I haven't seen that, but the problem with comparing the F1 and Veyron is that they have nothing in common barring the fact both have held the worlds fastest production car title.

They're both engineering masterpieces.

Since when has "necessary" and "Bugatti" had any business being in the same state, let alone the same sentence? :dopey:

Forget being brave enough to drive 270MPH, I want to see the first person to drive a convertible/targa over 200MPH. From what I can recall, all the top speed runs with other removeable-top supercars have been done with the top closed.

I truly believe that these prices are in danger of a freefall. My interpretation is that the current run of pricing is all based on speculation, and speculation never lasts. True multi-million dollar cars get that way over the course of decades, not after three Barret-Jackson auctions (which are cool to watch for two reasons: the cars, and to see who's getting ripped off the most).

The owner should have taken the money and ran. In ten years he can buy it back for a tenth of that price.
