Cables - do they hate me?

On the subject of connectors, why is it that no matter which way you try to plug a USB item in, the plug is upside down to the socket every time?

I think it's something to do with the way the connectors are put on. I find most cables generally flex back to a certain shape. The USB connector on the end seem to be upside down. You have to twist the cable and the connector get it in the slot.

You wanna see my room.

Just off the top of my head, there's the power cable for the tv, the power cable for the Freeview DVR, the power cable for the PS2, the power cable for the DVD player/surround sound decoder, the coaxial ariel cable from the wall to the freeview box, the scart cable from the freeview box into the splitter, the scart cable from the PS2 into the splitter, the 3.5 to phono lead from my laptop into the splitter, the phono leads from the splitter to the back of the decoder, the scart lead from the splitter to the TV, the composite cable from the DVD player/decoder to the TV, the VGA lead from the laptop to the back of the TV, the center, right, left, right rear and left rear speaker cables from the decoder, the subwoofer speaker cable from the decoder, the wireless mouse and keyboard USB thing into the laptop, the printer cable into the laptop, the printer power cable, the external hard drive usb cable into the laptop, the external hard drive power cable, a couple of PS2 controllers when they're not put away, the power cable for my fan, the power cable for my alarm clock, the charger for my Palm, my phone charger, my laptop cable and now the 4m long firewire cable from my video camera, which also happens to have a charger. And there's an extended coaxial cable going all the way around my room into the one next door.

Or S-Video connectors? Even when you have them aligned, it's still takes 7-8 tries to get it right, for some bizarre reason.

The only cables that really annoy me is earphone cables. And that putting 2 pieces of wire in a pocket for 1 minute ends up as 15 minutes of untangling fun.

Same here. Mine tend to wrap up, in a small donut in a way. The ear buds come off and I lose them, but when I notice its too late, after untangling these bloody things :grumpy: Cant someone make wireless earphones?

I've never, never been able to hook up my S-video cable to my computer without crawling behind it and straining in the lack of light to see which way the holes are arranged.

Hmmm...seems like I'm the only one that actually enjoys hooking up cables to things. I dunno why, I just really like it.

My cabling mess includes the power cable for my Macbook Pro, extended USB cable for the keyboard since the connected one is stupidly short, iPhone dock cable, TOSlink audio cable from MBP to my speakers, one TOSlink audio cable from my DirecTV box to the speakers, speaker wire from Front left/right and center speakers, 24" Dell monitor power cable, Logitech mouse dock power cable, firewire 400 cable from external hard drive, power supply cable from external hard drive, component cables from DirecTV box to back of monitor, power cable from DirecTV box, cable connecting speaker control module to subwoofer, subwoofer power cord, power brick for Xbox 360, VGA cable from Xbox 360 to monitor, ethernet cable running across the floor from the 360 to under the futon connected to the router, which has its power cable strung the rest of the way across the floor to the power outlet, the same with my DSL modem.

Haha, so do I. There's a sense of achievement, don't ya think? For some reason I like moving stuff around the room too, like moving the TV into a different corner and seeing what it looks like in a different place. I somehow feel better for doing it. Luckily I have a room that's large enough and stuff that's small enough...

Quick he needs a doctor!!!!!!!

well I was going to reorganize my entertainment center as a new years resolution....

but now I'm scared to go back in the house!! and Duke I couldn't agree more about USB plugs, no matter what angle you are working from to get it plugged in, your first guess as to which way it should be pointed is wrong.

i try my best to keep cables tucked around edges, through holes etc.
laying out the cables for the amp and subs in my car was fun however..taking up all the trim and carpet etc. >.< also annoying when cables arent quite long enough...im trying to pull out the radio unit to get to the back but keep the cable in it so it only gives me an inch and some blind fumbling space >.<
cable ties are a godsend still!

You're not alone:

USB cables need to be studied, because this phenomenon violates the laws of probability. They really need to start adding markings or alter the shape of those things .

If it makes you feel any better, I don't have that problem at all anymore. :D

Liar. You said only one wire and there are clearly THREE.

I stopped trying to tame the beast long ago. Most of the time, it minds its own business. I only have to deal with it when I move out.

Decided to revive this old thread to rant about my annoying headphone cable! I'm getting PO'ed at it because every time I lift my arm, my watch catches the wire and pulls it out of my computer's headphone jack. (computers on the floor)

I want to go get some cordless headphones now!
