Can adding a turbo kit ruin a car?

Hey guys, I had a random thought that occured to me after buying the Peugot 908 that I'd like to share.

I was going through the tuning shop and noticed that you could add all 3 turno kits to the car but I'm not so sure that it wouldn't just ruin the car's performance instead. This problem isn't completely directed at the turbo itself but more towards the large boost in power that it gives the car.

To me it's could result in a situation much like the Benz AMG SLK55 Black edition where the car couldn't go anywhere due to the rediculous amount of power going to the rear wheels. They'd just spin out every time you put your foot down.

Any thoughts?

They won't spin out every time you put your foot down, you just need to learn how to handle the car differently. You can't just floor it and expect good results. After all, this is GT5. Not Midtown Madness 2.

Kinda like with the TVR Speed 12.

That car was sooooo hard to handle in GT4. I have yet to come across it in GT5, yet i imagine its much the same, if not the exact same Thats if its even in the game offcourse (i havent checked)

throttle control?
i put the turbo on mine and its a beast
easy to handle with the dfgt

If you don't like a turbo, you can simply just, take it off :P simples!

Add some front ballast, soften the springs up front and that thing cuddles the apex's like a baby and a teddy bear.

I can confirm this. The 12 is a dog when fully tuned and turbo added.

Limit your car to a power ceiling below the maximum provided by the S1 turbo. Test the car at that ceiling (and at the same track) with each different turbo; you'll see that each gives the car differing performance characteristics.

It can give you useful information when racing in PP/HP limited races - sometimes a Stage 2 turbo is better than a Stage 3 and so on.

Depends on how one defines ruining. You can definitely make a car harder to drive and increase the skill required to handle it dramatically in some cases, but you're not going to do anything to the car that can't be compensated for or reversed.

From a purely subjective standpoint though, any upgrade you do has potential to ruin the feeling of the car. It's why I refuse to modify my 430 Scuderia at all.

I have found that Turbos and Italians do not get along. I bought a whole new 458 because the S3 turbo made the back wheels spin out under the slightest throttle when TC was turned off.

I appreciate the feedback guys.

You bought another car because you had a turbo on it...... why didn't you just take the turbo off? Duh.

lol Exactly. At first, I thought by ruining he meant in the long run of the car's health. What's the dillio?

Correct me if I'm wrong but i believe the high range turbo cancels out the low and mid turbo and you can only turn one turbo on at a time, but it depends on the car, and your setup (suspension, brake balance, etc.). Full hp upgrades w/o suspension upgrades makes the cobra almost undrivable, i wish I left it alone, but most cars it helps to add a turbo

I think he means adding the turbo and leaving the settings stock. But, of course, its gonna make the car undrivable.

With suspension tuning it works quite well. I have that car with stage 3 turbo and it is really really quick. Though i tend to ruin my rear tyres in enduros because it is a diesel so the power comes in very early so throttle control is harder then it would be if it had been a petrol, but tune the suspension to your liking and make sure that your LSD is setup correctly. That is what makes the biggest difference. If you still have a little trouble just add 1 TC (which is what i do) and you rear tyres will last a lot longer and you will find your self going incredibly fast.

You want one of my Speed 12's?
I bought 4 different ones already and skipped on the 5th because I have all the settings I need.

I don't use TC on any cars and I use a DS3 and the 458 is a mild car.

If you put a Stage 3 turbo on already powerful cars (Group C cars for example) the turbo lag makes them easier to drive provided you anticipate when the turbo boost kicks in.

Sorry to sound like a total tool but, what is turbo lag and turbo boost? :sly:

Turbo lag is the time it takes for the turbo to start spinning, and the boost is the pressure that it provides. Basically, a turbo is a turbine that is driven by exhaust gas, which is drawn through the turbo to spin the propellers. The time it takes for the turbo to get spinning to a useful speed is turbo lag, and generally speaking a big turbo and/or a small displacement engine will result in more lag.

Then, when the propellers are spinning, the other half of the turbo sucks in air with its impellers, which is then mixed with fuel and injected into the engine; the more pressure means more air, air mixes with fuel to increase the combustion efficiency and thus increase power, which is the boost.

An easy way to get more power from a turbo is simply to tell the bypass valve (which will open when the pressure inside the turbo reaches a certain level to stop it from exploding, amongst other things) to wait a bit longer and let the pressure keep building, which is known as increasing the boost.

And yes, adding a turbo can ruin a car, and also adding the wrong type for a given circuit can ruin a car too. For example, for SSR7 (is that the one with the huge straight sections?) would be best run with a stage 3 turbo, because you'll basically never go particularly slow and the response therefore doesn't really matter. A tight circuit like Cote d'Azur really needs a smaller turbo to get the best response time.

Also as I said, a car with a small engine but huge turbo would probably be slower than the same car with a smaller turbo, simply because of the lag. A lot of the old premiums like the 500, Samba Bus and both 'wagens have (if I remember correctly) higher or very close PP numbers with a stage 2 turbo instead of 3.

I think I have found another problem. I added the S3 Turbo to my 908, and in B-Spec the driver seems like he is scared to hit the gas in fear of the tires spnning out of control. it's veryyyyyy annoying because he comes out of corners at 30-60mph, but he stays in that range for another good 1-4 seconds which is a bitch when the race is very close.

Don't add weight.
Don't mess with the springs.
Don't worry about driving it differently.

All you have to do is use the cheater traction control with the gear box. Set 1st gear as short as possible (so you won't downshift into it on the course), set 2nd and 3rd as wide as possible, then set 4th a little bit wider than normal. You'll have more traction on the throttle, less tire wear, and you'll keep the advantage of having way to much power.

I found this to be quite funny. Buying a new 458 Italia because you bought a stage 3 turbo for your current one... The funny part is: There is no turbo S1, S2 or S3 (or a supercharger for that matter) for the 458.

BUT, if you have the the engine tuning S1, S2 and S3, then I can understand that it can mess up your ride without the possibility to remove it from your car, besides buying a new one.

For your B-spec Bob problem. What level race are you trying to have Bob win and what level is Bob? Have you tried to encourage/whip him so he pushes to the max? Else you might have to fine the car, without the S3 turbo on it.

Put a Stage 3 turbo on the F40 and you'll see what both are
It's turbo lag is insane.
Or even worse, just buy the Nissan OPTION Stream Z '04 from the USED Dealership.
That is even worse.
Power at low: None.... nope, still none... sigh...
Revs get above 3k: FUUUUUUUUUUUUU... Well hello there mister rev limiter...

Have you tried a fully ajustable LSD? You can tune out some of the low rev agression, although I should point out I'm far from being an expert on this subject.

You just have to watch full power in corners if you have a narrow power band really, the wider the band, the better it is to drive. Not always true, but generally so.

Touche' I think that was a mistake, it was one of the first cars I fully tuned in-game, I just assumed it had the turbo otion, but I just don't like the 458 with all the extra power.

The Bob I was using to win the GT Championship in Pro series was level 14 which is closely matched but I just solved the problem..... Gave him the Formula Gran Turismo and after the first 20 seconds on Sarthe I realized I won't have to coach him at all. :D

Any of the turbo upgrades in GT5 are beneficial, no matter what. They are All exceptionally drivable. There are very few cars that are an exception, and then only if they're on slippery tires.

The real question you should ask is if you want to keep the car NA. NA makes for an easier to control car if the driving you'll be doing has the car going into drifts often. But if there's no drifting, then you can't go wrong with any turbo upgrade in this game.

Also... Superchargers are always the best.

My 2002 Turbo has MASSIVE turbo lag. I put a high RPM Turbo kit on it because I wanted to make it go 170 in a straight line. The only way to get rid of it is to hold the brake, give it revs and release the brake. This thing will FLY! It's a little track monster.

+1 to Superchargers being better. In games I don't mind turbos. In real life, I think they stink.

"Turbos are for people who cannot reach their power goals without them."

You sure about that? I think I came across a car that was better using a Stage 3 turbo than a supercharger.
