Can i use my Computer Screen as a Tv? (For UKGTP8)

I'm going to the UKGTP8, and as we are in need of more TV's, I thought it might be possible to use my old computer screen as a tv for it. Now, i'm not very computer literate, so you may need to explain in detail, if it is possible.

This is what I know about the screen:-
  • The model is a Xerox XA7 19i Monitor.
  • When I brought it with the computer, the screen and the computer were able to watch television through it (Although we never properly set up this option).
My knowledge end's there to be honest with you.

I also have a picture of the one and only socket hole on the screen, and ontop is the plug that has a lead away from the monitor.

If anyone can help me then it would be greatly appriciated!

That socket is for the power cord.

It's not possible to directly hook up your screen to a PS2, you need hardware for that.
If your pc has a TV input it could be possible, if it doesn't cause a delay.
I have a usb capture card, and it has a 7 second delay, because the device converts the analog signal to a digital one before it passes it along to the pc.
The good part is that my pc uses almost no process power to record videos, but it has a delay.
 
The one on the top is a DVI cable, if that helps. I was trying to find a DVI to phono adaptor, but I didn't get very far. Plenty of DVI to HDMI adaptors, though...

Essentially the answer is no, I'm afraid. Unless you can find a PS2 DVI cable or some other way of connecting a DVI cable to a PS2, you won't get very far. Sorry :(

I'd guess so. I've never tried it myself, but there we are :)

It's worth bearing in mind that these don't come cheap though. A similar adaptor - VGA (a popular PC monitor plug) to scart adaptor will set you back a whopping £79 from Superfi. It'd actually be cheaper to go and buy a 21 inch CRT TV. You could get a 14 incher for £40 in Argos if you really needed a budget TV too.

So basically, it's not economical unless you really really want to do it.

Is that the right thing i'm in need of? Because it's cheaper than the price you mentioned.

I don't need a new tv, it's just that this screen is sat in the office, gathering dust and my dad said if I can find a way to use it, I can have it.

No, it's the wrong way around. You want Video-out to DVI-in.

Not sure of the quality of this, but I think that's an S-Video in port (although it's labelled 'VGA in'.) So, buy a S-Video out cable for your PS2 (or borrow mine) and then you need a 15-pin D-Sub to DVi-D cable... (probably nicked from teh PC this monitor was attahed to) and you're sorted, for £23.

But the colours are wrong aren't they? Shouldn't it be *Checks tv* Red, White and Yellow?

I think you'd need a set of RGB component cables rather than the standard PS2 ones that most people use.
 
Okay, check out my edited post above. Four types of the thing you need. The £41 one will connect straight to your stock PS2 output cable (with the yellow plug) and you'll need a simple cable (male VGA 15D-sub to female DVI-D) to go from the box to the monitor. In fact, show us the other end of that cable in the first photo - you might have it already.

I might buy one of these to see what it's like. :) Then I (like you) can bring my monitor!

And this is for a component cable with 3 cables for transferring the video.
The cables that come standard with the PS2 are composite cables, and the video signal only travels through 1 cable, which means less quality.

have a look at the LG monitor in one of my posts above.
They come in different sizes, and have full HD support.

Oops, my mistake, only the 22'' has 1080p
This 19'' has a native 1440 x 900

That's probably best :lol:. You never know what the quality will be like with those adaptors either.
 
The whole problem is that you need a female DVI connection which I don't think exists? So yeah, it might just be better to get a new monitor. Hell, I bet it might be better quality from what you have now too. :sly:

Meh... so 22" and it's not 1080p? Although LG is definitely a good company, expensive but good.
 
The price difference is around €300-400, with your monitor at more than €700.
The contrast ratio of the LG is 3000:1, while the viewsonic has 800:1
It's better in response time, but only by 2 ms.

I agree, the screen size is big, but you don't need 1080p on a 22''.
