I have a compaq and i want to format the HD but i don't want to until i know if i need the windoz number thing or if the restore cd make it not have to do that does anyone know

You need your serial key every time you want to install Windows.

but it didn't come the the XP cd it just came with the restore cd ware could i find the serial key

If you ordered your PC from a company like Dell, Gateway, Compaq, etc. They should have given you an OEM CD. It's basically just the Windows CD and a manual without the box. You could either A: Demand a CD from the PC company, or B: Get a "I didn't pay for this ****" serial number.
