Is registration still open?
I can't find a post that says it's closed, so apologies for the dumbass question.

@elginge, we are still accepting drivers so just get me your car info and I'll add you to the registration list. Which event would be best for you? We will be have 3 separate races on Tuesday evenings, Friday nights and Saturday afternoons.

As for the tracks, I removed Laguna Seca from the original schedule because a lot of people had already run it a lot and the previous Capp league had run it. I don't care for Deep Forest though, plus it has that giant concrete run-off area that just encourages everybody to cut the corner (turn 3 I think?) and that would just open a can of worms. I'd love to do Monza, but we have a mixed bag of people who love lots of drafting and people who want drafting at a minimum and Monza would be a draft-fest for sure. I've tried to pick tracks that have some drafting areas but not a ton, that's why I'm think Eiger short track would be a good fit, or possibly one of the Cape Ring shorter variations (without the loop). My first choice though would probably be Autumn Ring Full-Reverse, it's a very fun track and by going in reverse the long straight would be slightly up-hill which would minimize the draft a little bit.

I'm not sure if I'll be able to host any practice sessions tonight, Wednesday's are usually my poker night, but I should have plenty of time tomorrow. I should have the Qualifying format sorted out by then so maybe we could run a mini program with Qualifying followed by a short race to make sure everything works as planned. 👍

As far as drafting tracks go, the only one on the sched now is GVE, so Monza would be the second one. You need a real good run to draft with these cars and complete a pass. I'd do Monza for sure, and would prefer the no chicane version too. Puts a real premium on the few corners there are on the track to keep up your momentum. I don't like Eiger myself, and I think that corkscrew turn would be a real handful with SS on, but I've never run the car there. A custom track would work too, but later in the schedule so everyone had a chance to download it and practice on it. Road course Indy would work as well as a drafting track and it's got lots of room to pass and run wide.

I have a custom track I built with the Cappuccino's in mind that has a nice combination of medium drafting sections and twisty bits. I could shuffle the other races forward in the schedule and put the custom track as race 4 so everyone has lots of time to download it and practice it. Here's an onboard video of it:

Let me know what you guys think. :)

@StigsHero
Thanks for the info - I'm at work at the moment so will post everything once I get home.
Never raced online in GT5 so be gentle!
I'm in the UK, so 5 hours ahead of your guys, so the Tuesday and Friday evening sessions suit me - No points deducted for caffeine fueled racing? Or is it compulsary to have drunk coffee before racing?

Cappuccino Raceway looks very challenging - Plenty of twists and I can just envisage going three abreast into the first corner. I like the long downhill section too.
I'd be more than happy to give it a go, even if it was just on a non-race practice session.

#42 elginge/RDAardvark Banana Yellow/Silver wheels

Although that Banana yellow looks distinctly gold to me!
Will try to post a pic.

I really like some of the custom tracks, can be quite interesting! Although whenever I try they never turn out too good haha, I guess I need to try harder lol.

On the subject of tracks, why don't we do Deep Forest reverse? You dont have to worry so much about the concrete because it'll give you a bit less of an advantage in reverse than it does normally, but I've never seen Deep Forest reverse used in ANY racing, so it's probably not a very popular choice lol.

Still haven't had a proper chance to get online yet, so expect a FR from me sometime soon people! lol ;)

Vatrox: good to run with you too.

I like Deep Forest. Re the concrete, we could all agree it is part of the track. Or not part of the track.

Is anyone running a room tonight? I may be able to join late (like after 9 pm ET).

We were driving with TheFreeQ for past few hours, just took the room down - it's after midnight here already. Anyway, my times are slowly getting better, managed to get 1:04.7 today :)

Was this on Tsukuba? I've managed a 1.05.8 on sports softs, but I need to work on my setup - My tyres are being shredded after a few laps.

Check out the GT5 QuickTune app for Android phones

Yup, Tsukuba on sport softs, online. Strange thing about your tyres though, mine were fine after 20 laps on the circuit... Try lowering your LSD lock maybe?

Btw, downloading your QuickTune app right now, HTC Desire here :)

That is strange about the tires. I've done 20 lap runs and still have 85-90% of my tires left. In fact, after 20 laps at Tsukuba they are still dark blue!

I should be able to open a Cappuccino room this evening between approx. 7:00 and 9:00pm EDT tonight if anybody's looking to do some testing and tuning. If we get a handfull of drivers I'd like to run a mini program with a qualifying session followed by a short race so I can see how everything is going to work out. I think I know how I'm going to handle qualifying but I want to give it a run-through before we start the season. So I'll need a handful of people to help me out if possible.

BTW, the track I posted a video of is now shared if anybody wants to download it and give it a go. If you do, let me know what you think. I have a few others I designed specifically for the Capp's too. 👍

I'd like to drive with you guys tonight...hopefully I'm home in time!! Kind of odd to be shredding tires on this little car...mine don't ever get to fully warm in 10 laps...was the same with racing softs too.

I'm up for some practice tonight, and I sure needs some. Still in low 1:05's online. If we have time, we should try a couple of the tracks in question, also.

I'll have another go at the setup tonight, but tyres were going light blue after only a couple of laps. To be honest, this is the first time I've driven the Cappuccino and my driving style will need to be adapted somewhat for this wee car.

I'll try and join in tonight, if I can work out the time correctly - UK is 5 hours in front of you guys.
Also, apologies, but no headset at the moment.

Those testing. Are in Private Lounge or Open Lobby?

@elginge - are you doing your testing online or offline? The physics and tire wear are different between the 2 so I always do my testing online.

Previous testing was in a private lounge but it was noted that in the private lounge the tires were taking much longer to warm up than in the open lobby so tonight I'm going to have the practice in an open lobby. Plus, this should help people that had problems trying to connect to my room. 👍

I might have to move it to a private lounge briefly to test some qualifying ideas. I need to have a controlled environment to get the data I need and if I have riff-raff stumbling into the room that will mess things up. I only need about 15-20 minutes for the testing and 4-5 people, just so I can repeat and confirm the results we got the other night. I'm confident we can make qualifying work accurately though, but you know what they say: "measure twice, cut once". :)

I've been testing offline - In the practise option. To test online, do you just setup a private room?

Kinda still new to all this - Not had the PS3 very long and this is my first foray into racing since the days of Colin McRae Rally and GP Legends on the PC! That must be (mumble, mumble, show your age) years ago!

Any pointers are most welcome. Sarcasm is also welcome!

Elginge, I strongly recommend doing all your practice online, the difference in physics stands out alot more on the Capp for some reason. I had very good practice times offline, and I had to change my setup drastically just to get low 1:05's online. I'm also finding that the Capp likes it's rear end jacked up a little bit online.
If you set up an online practice room in an open lobby, anyone can join. If you set it up in your personal lounge (the little coffee cup on your community page) only people on your friends list can join.

I have not noticed any difference between lounge and lobby online, a couple people mentioned tire wear, but I really don't think wear is gonna play a very big part for us in these cars.

Are there any differences? I typically test in my private lounge.

I think the only difference is non-friends can join open lobbies. 👍
(there may be minute handling difference, but I don't think there is.)

tree'd!

May have been overlooking this, as some of our racers are still new to it. Make sure you are actually setting up your practice room correctly (disable traction control, ASM,...). If your not setting it up as our league regulations, you may see ridiculous differences in handling.
Also, no reason to feel embarrassed about your driving, there are enough of us that everyone will have somebody with equal driving skills. Last time I practiced with a group, there were a couple guys a good half a lap in front of me, but I still had someone racing hard right next to me.

Many thanks for this - I'll have a play tonight and see how I get on. If I'm not too embarrassed, I'll maybe join some of you for a practise.

I've been told that, at least with the Capp's, it takes much longer for the tires to warm up in a private lounge than in an open lobby. Not necessarily more tire-wear, but when we were running in my private lounge the other night the tires stayed dark blue and never got "warm". Somebody had a Capp room open earlier that was in a public lobby and said the tires were warming up much quicker there.

This isn't to say that there's any difference in handling or performance, but I would imagine if tires take longer to warm up it will have some influence on your performance. Also, it seems like people have fewer connection problems in open lobbies and I know some people were having problems joining my room the other night when it was in a private lounge.

And yes, all practice should be done online because the Capp does handle quite differently with online physics. Either an open lobby or a private lounge will do, but if you open a public room you will get riff-raff joining and possibly driving backwards in an X2010. :)

I believe the connection issues are all over the network and affecting a lot of people. I'm not sure it has anything to do with private or open lobbies. I'm having disconnection issues in my own private lobby and public lobbies as well.

If you open a room tonight Brandon, make sure you title it something along the lines of "Cappuccino RM Only" and I would just boot without question, anyone who enters the track with anything other than that.

I haven't experience many connection issues since we've been back online, but I'll try it in a public room to see if that helps. I also want to see if the tires do warm up quicker in a public room.

Yes, I will be sure to have "ONLY" in the name in the hopes it will keep randoms out. Since the power/weight on these cars are so low, hopefully those restrictions will keep people out too. I don't think there are too many cars that would be allowed to enter with those limits. Hopefully we won't have too many problems, and I'll boot anybody that doesn't belong there. If I accidentally boot somebody from the group because I don't recognize your screen-name just re-enter and tell me you're in the group. Hopefully that won't happen, I'll print out the registration list so I can have it as reference. 👍

Hope to see some of you on track tonight!!

B

I will join tonight, probably near the end of the session.

Public rooms are kind of fun when people run different cars to meet the HP/weight/tires restrictions. As for tires, I think as long as everyone's tires are at the same temp, whatever that is, that should be fine.
