I have this friend and he's looking at a 1990 300ZX. He really wants it but it has 140,000 miles on it. Do you think he should get it or does it have too many miles on it?
depends on the service history, the condition of the engine at the moment, how long your friend wants to keep the car for and lastly if any of the engine parts have been changed already because if not then they could probably do with changing quite soon !!!
A mate's car ( golf vr6 ) has just had £600 woth of work done on it. A tensioner on the timing belt went and so did 4 of his valves !!!!
I thought £600 was OK as the work involved taking the top half of the head off and removing the gearbox to get to the bottom of the belt as it on the right of the engine rather than the left, which is helpful !!!
I say avoid it, especially if it is a twin turbo unless the motor has been rebuilt or replaced. If he is set on buying it tell him to bring it to a mechanic and get the compression of the motor checked.
I really dont think miles affect anything. If you buy a new car, The first thing that should be invested is a rebuilt engine, all new gaskets and belts. Even if there is documentation of a cars history, you still dont REALLY know what it has been through. This way, you know what you are starting off with.
The VG30 motors are notorious for early deaths, and as I've said before - mechanics will charge you an arm and a leg to work on the Z32 300zx. Simple tasks on most cars are extremely difficult and time consuming on these cars, not to mention the twin turbo version.
All I can say is: Tell your friend to save his money, not for buying the car, but for when something breaks.
Did I mention mechanics charge an arm and a leg when something breaks?
