Ferrari 458 ITALIA '09 vs Mercedes SLS AMG '10
Ferraris have always been renown for their brute-forced V8 engines in tiny little plastic boxes with multi-geometry suspension and every other technological advance squeezed into the big wheel in the driver's seat. In other words, Ferrari is one of the most exquisite supercar maker of it's type... or at least, I think so. Of course all of it's history is practically useless in GT5.
When it comes to Mercedes, you may think luxury sports car. However, AMG doesn't joke around when it comes to producing brute force and brilliant handling; possibly the Ferrari's main competition.
COST AND FIRST IMPRESSIONS
I was filled with excitement and awe as I saw what was one of the most beautiful cars in the game spinning in front of me. It's elegant lines and shape will make anyone's mouth water! It looks fantastic, especially with those groovy headlights and swooping hood, however, it isn't very cheap at 283,000.
--
The Mercedes SLS AMG didn't quite make me as excited as it should have been. Could it be that it is in the default, dark, drab red colour? On a closer look, it looks like it was built to ram into things. It's basic shape isn't too elegant, though the side grills look meaty. Not only this, but it costs 197,620, considerably cheaper than the Ferrari.
PERFORMANCE
In the Power range, both cars are extremely similar; the Mercedes has only one more horsepower to boot, and more torque, at 66.30 KG/FM. However, the Mercedes weighs in at quite a large 1,620 kilograms. Will this heavy weight prove tough in the corners?
--
The Ferrari lost on Horsepower and Torque- however it can make up points, because it only weighs in at 1485 kilograms, almost 150 kilos LESS than the Mercedes, which could prove useful at the corners. Both engines are V8s, though the Mercedes is considerably larger in terms of displacement. Performance can only be settled on the track; so I took them for a spin.
ON THE TRACK- POWER
In terms of power, the Mercedes wins, probably because of that massive engine pumping more torque to the wheels. However, it was a very VERY close call in a drag race!
ON THE TRACK- HANDLING
I feel guilty when I say that the Mercedes triumphs again. The Ferrari is much more agile and nimble, but the Mercedes is much more composed and less tail happy, albeit slightly more understeer. It sticks to the road like glue, especially in the high speed corners. However, that said, a good driver would find the 458 Italia easier to get round tight corners, simply because the SLS is just much too large to handle them. Lastly, the 458 Italia is definitely more fun to handle and is a massively fun challenge with the throttle, and you will be grinning like a lunatic when you get it right!
ON THE TRACK- MISCELLANEOUS
Headlight wise, both of them are utterly useless in the dark.
It's a tie for both, because the 458 Italia has a better view of the front window, whilst SLS has the nifty lifting spoiler and better view in the back; however, I swing towards the 458 Italia because you can view that beautiful engine behind you in 1080P beauty. SLS has slightly better windscreen wipers, but that's not a noticeable difference to most. The engine sound from the Ferrari was disappointing- the SLS wins with it's deep growl.
ON THE TRACK- GEARING AND BRAKING
The 458 Italia wins when it comes to braking by a long shot. Be prepared to fly into corners with the SLS, because the brakes are considerably weaker than the Ferrari's. However, gearing wise, although both have 7 gears, the SLS wins because it shifts much quicker than the Ferrari.
CONCLUSION
Both are brilliant supercars- but I would choose the Ferrari. Why? Because it is much more fun when it comes to corners, and, let's face it, it's much more precious than the SLS, and it has much better styling, and god damn it is drop-dead gorgeous. If you don't care about the looks or fun and want a cheap, winning supercar, the SLS will do that job perfectly for you.
