So what if you've just gone and bought a shiny brand new car. and want to race it online against friends with the same type of car - only to find they haven't got one.

So here's my idea - Host controlled garage sharing...

The host picks any car from their garage and that car is then the only car available to every other member of that room - whether they own one or not.
To keep things equal any modifications could also be transferred onto the other cars. Or perhaps, if required, there could be a "revert to default" option.

The host could get to show off their car collection / tuning prowess. And other drivers could get to try cars they might not have or cannot afford - a race full of 20 million credit cars!

It would also be quick to set up for some great close racing - since all cars would be equal.

For visual appeal I'm sure the game could allocate a different colour to each car.

Someone setting up a one make championship might find this useful since they would be able to control what modifications the car has, and the car would be available to all those who enter. You could all test, then everyone could drop back to the lobby. The host could then change the car settings (e.g. more power/change tires) and then that's updated to all the others to carry on testing.

Might work?

This is a great suggestion, really well thought out and described.

It has so many great applications!

You got me thinking about the practical applications of this idea, and I can see a possible extension to the concept.

Here's my imagined scenario.

You and I are in your room, you have the Ferrari 330 P4 and we both take it out as you described above. Then I say to you, "how'd you like to try MY awesome Volvo Estate?" or "how'd you like to try MY tune of the 330 P4?". You agree, so we do.

I think it'd be fun to provide a facility where anyone in the room could share any of their cars under the approval of the host.

What do you think, @IfAndOr?

PS I like the idea of having different colors and I'd really like it if I, as a member of the room, could have the game apply my pre-chosen favorite color to each of these shared cars. That would allow consistency of coloring, so that the members of the room would be easily able to identify who is who on the track.

Why thank you sir!

If that was possible then it would certainly add to the idea. It would save friends having to make a separate rooms to highlight their cars. But to stop it being abused, it would need a lockout option by the host.

Again, if that was possible (favorite colour in options/user maybe) it would be ideal. And if it could add a persons favorite number (to those cars that have them) it would be even better. It would certainly make for more interesting photos.

So many permutations!

I'll have to try your awesome Volvo Estate sometime. Faster than a Ferrari 330 P4? ;)

Not yet, but I'm working on it! Surely replacing the inline 2.1 liter four cylinders with a humungous v16 mounted midships that'd get me close?

If I change to one of host's cars, when I exit the lobby, the car will be returned? Or my car will go to my garage? (Not sure)

No. The car would only be available while in that online room and be unavailable when you left.

However Harsk you made me think...
It would be great if you could transfer setups from others while online and add them to vehicles you may already have in your own garage.

Setup sharing? yes. Car sharing? lol no. Play the game, get money and buy your cars, thats what the game is about.

This is a great idea. Especially for people that don't play very often and don't have that many cars. It is frustrating when you want to race a friend with your new car and they have to pick something similar but not the same PP etc.

but this is excellent for Spec series racing. no guess work. lets say you wanted to do a series like Continental Tyres. The host could provide cars from the host garage already set up. even playing field for all participants. The host could have all 20mil Cr. cars and is able to make available to those that dont have any.
