Wait how come I always hear a whirring sound when I go Reverse in my Toyota MR2, but when I go Forward I NEVER hear a whirring sound. I only hear it driving my buses. I sort of like this sound...![]()
So my bus has a Racing Transmission!!![]()

Well no, Racing trans was a example.
Could either be the gearbox fluid is low or scored gears...most likely if its not sticking going into any gears the fluid is ok, but its easy to check so why not check it? If manual then tranny fluid, scored gears or torque converter isn't working properly. At least it can't whine when its sitting in the driveway![]()
I think every "modern" car has the straight-cut reverse gears, but nearly ever car out there today has the synchronized forward gears.
...This does require a mention of the old M-21 Muncie "Rock Crusher" transmissions that were made available on what seemed like every GM performance car back in the late '60s and early '70s. You've gotta love that transmission noise when combined with the rumble of an old rat or mighty mouse...
...Its nearly perfect!
I hear it from any city bus I drive, so it has nothing to do with the maintenance. They start whining as soon as it hits 3rd gear. It also makes like maybe a BOV sound or something (maybe the big turbo is doing this.) while shifting into 3rd gear. It even has seamless shifting. The whine gets louder and more high pitched as I go faster and switch gears. Still sounds sexy.![]()
The whine is due to the drivetrains design, the helical gear cut is probably very shallow for long term reliability, though this does increase the whine.
As for the BOV type sound, that is the pneumatic shifter, using the busses pneumatic system. (as many trucks do)
Its rumored Dodge did a similar thing with the SRT-4. Not to mention how everyone and their mother knew that the SVT Cobra produced far more than "390 BHP," how Ford rerated the GT at 550 after months of pounding on the Gallardo, and how Mercedes sheepishly admitted that the SL55 AMG did not actually have "476 HP." And who really believes that the SL600 only has 500BHP?
Didn't catch the whole being an actual city bus thing, thought when you said bus you meant a vw bus for some odd reason...lack of sleep on me i guess. So know its not the up keep then and i would agree with the cut gears and also the shifter\maybe the air brakes venting out also. The BOV i had on my GSX was sexy though, loved just to listen to the turbo and BOV do there things.
General Motors was pretty notorious for it. Although the LS6 (1970) was rated at a full-on 450 BHP, a lot of people have said it was truly north of 500 BHP. Same with most of the 427s which were rated around 425 BHP, but probably put out closer to 475 BHP.
Thanks Viper. How do you know this? I feel like I'm dumb compared to the people on this site. I hope that I'm not asking too many questions...
Was there ever a Rear Engined Front Wheel Drive Car? I can taste the understeer...![]()

Yea... a VW Bus would really have 330HP with 1150Lb. Ft. of torque... stock.Get some sleep.
Actually i didn't see that part either....well could have a Porsche motor in it, fits nice.
On the subject of hp ratings for insurance, in my 79 malibu it came stock with a V-6 so when the VIN got ran for insurance thats what the rated it for. Well, the dyno on the 355 in it said it had 455hp, i win insurance company....i win.
What type of boneheads who wants to sell thier cars would say the car actually has less HP? pfffft... dumba**es...
xXSilencerXxI'm curious about the LS1 in my Trans Am. I always hear about people saying it is under rated at 305 hp, but I've never seen concrete eveidence of it being truely under rated.

^ Its the single-clutch "S-Tronic," and I was a little disappointed with that. They probably should have given it the "R-Tronic" (aka DSG) to make it a bit better, but from what I understand it works well.
