Wow this site is awesome. It tought me so much about cars BTW I +Rep the people who responded and helped. :) Also the torque is exactly the same # as the HP at 5250RPM I wouldn't have known that, thanks. :)👍

Wait how come I always hear a whirring sound when I go Reverse in my Toyota MR2, but when I go Forward I NEVER hear a whirring sound. I only hear it driving my buses. I sort of like this sound... :)

Your reverse gear is a straight cut gear with no syncromesh (the reason reverse sometime crunches when selecting it), forward gears are helical cut and stay in mesh with another helical cut gear all the time.

This is why most 'racing' transmissions whine, they have straight cut gears.

So my bus has a Racing Transmission!! :)

Could either be the gearbox fluid is low or scored gears...most likely if its not sticking going into any gears the fluid is ok, but its easy to check so why not check it? If manual then tranny fluid, scored gears or torque converter isn't working properly. At least it can't whine when its sitting in the driveway:sly:

I think every "modern" car has the straight-cut reverse gears, but nearly ever car out there today has the synchronized forward gears.

...This does require a mention of the old M-21 Muncie "Rock Crusher" transmissions that were made available on what seemed like every GM performance car back in the late '60s and early '70s. You've gotta love that transmission noise when combined with the rumble of an old rat or mighty mouse...

...Its nearly perfect!

Well no, Racing trans was a example.

Ohh... :dunce:

I hear it from any city bus I drive, so it has nothing to do with the maintenance. They start whining as soon as it hits 3rd gear. It also makes like maybe a BOV sound or something (maybe the big turbo is doing this.) while shifting into 3rd gear. It even has seamless shifting. The whine gets louder and more high pitched as I go faster and switch gears. Still sounds sexy. :sly:

Agreed. :)👍 I also heard some old completely bone stock Pontiac Silhouette (Or some minivan with a 3.8L V6 engine.) It sounded like a damn muscle car. It sounded like the Nascar I saw on Boston Road. I was giving the car a weird look as it zoomed by.

EDIT: It feels like I'm in school again... This site is great. 👍 I also feel like some bus weirdo. :(

The whine is due to the drivetrains design, the helical gear cut is probably very shallow for long term reliability, though this does increase the whine.

As for the BOV type sound, that is the pneumatic shifter, using the busses pneumatic system. (as many trucks do)

Thanks Viper. How do you know this? I feel like I'm dumb compared to the people on this site. I hope that I'm not asking too many questions... :nervous:

Was there ever a Rear Engined Front Wheel Drive Car? I can taste the understeer...:yuck:

Didn't catch the whole being an actual city bus thing, thought when you said bus you meant a vw bus for some odd reason...lack of sleep on me i guess. So know its not the up keep then and i would agree with the cut gears and also the shifter\maybe the air brakes venting out also. The BOV i had on my GSX was sexy though, loved just to listen to the turbo and BOV do there things.

Its rumored Dodge did a similar thing with the SRT-4. Not to mention how everyone and their mother knew that the SVT Cobra produced far more than "390 BHP," how Ford rerated the GT at 550 after months of pounding on the Gallardo, and how Mercedes sheepishly admitted that the SL55 AMG did not actually have "476 HP." And who really believes that the SL600 only has 500BHP?

Mopar has a long history of doing this sort of thing... (Can you say Hemi?) Did anyone really belive the at the old 426 Hemi only made 425 hp? And I do believe many other muscle car engines were underrated for insurance purposes... Its a time honored tradition...

General Motors was pretty notorious for it. Although the LS6 (1970) was rated at a full-on 450 BHP, a lot of people have said it was truly north of 500 BHP. Same with most of the 427s which were rated around 425 BHP, but probably put out closer to 475 BHP.

Yea... a VW Bus would really have 330HP with 1150Lb. Ft. of torque... stock.:lol::lol::lol::lol: Get some sleep.

What type of boneheads who wants to sell thier cars would say the car actually has less HP? pfffft... dumba**es...

Probably someone somewhere, possibly German or a Crazy Finn.

A Car Questions thread! Just like in the music forum with the unknown song thread. Any member can asnwer the quieries and questions asked by other users! (for imformative purposes, not trying to test others knowledge, although that could be a thread too!)

What do you think?

I like the idea too, but it might be better suited to the ask gtplanet thread.
Can we get a MOD opinion here?

I'm curious about the LS1 in my Trans Am. I always hear about people saying it is under rated at 305 hp, but I've never seen concrete eveidence of it being truely under rated.

Actually i didn't see that part either....well could have a Porsche motor in it, fits nice.

On the subject of hp ratings for insurance, in my 79 malibu it came stock with a V-6 so when the VIN got ran for insurance thats what the rated it for. Well, the dyno on the 355 in it said it had 455hp, i win insurance company....i win.

What? I'm sorry. You must be new around here, so I have no idea if you're trying to be funny or taking a jab at the Americans. Every major automotive company has done it, be they American or not. In the '60s, we were very good at dong it, and did it in almost every major model made available.

...And it wasn't just power outputs either. In 1969, the Chevelle SS featured the first engine that had ever been advertised as smaller than it actually was. The 396 found in many of the SS models was indeed a 403 big-block, and indeed was making well-over the prescribed power outputs.

A lot of people say it, and I think a lot of the tests had noted it as well. I seem to recall a test of the Z/28 convertible in 2000 or 2001, equipped with a four-speed 4L60E, ran to 60 in a little over 5 seconds and topped out well over 150 MPH. By comparison to later SS 35th Anniversary models, which were rated at "just" 325 BHP, most of the coupe tests were about the same overall.

...It would lead one to think that early LS1 models were underrated just a bit, but like you, I've never really seen any solid performance figures. Dyno-tested models on shows like Horsepower TV have been putting down numbers in the 260s to the wheels, and assuming at least a 20 % loss at the crank, that would put the power numbers above 310 BHP.

Question:

Why does the Audi R8 have that disgusting flat non-body colored panel on its side? Be reasonable Audi. It's disgusting.

I'm indifferent about it (the audi).

And let's make this the car questions thread. I'll go ahead and change the thread title accordingly.

^ Its the single-clutch "S-Tronic," and I was a little disappointed with that. They probably should have given it the "R-Tronic" (aka DSG) to make it a bit better, but from what I understand it works well.

Heres a good question:

When will Ford get off their ass and stick a "good" engine in the Mustang GT? It took how many years to reach 300 BHP, and with the Camaro and Challenger on the horizon, they're going to need 340+ to be worthing anything...

Return of the 302 anyone?

A Porsche dealer told me DSG can't be put in cars like that because it can't accomodate the torque.
