What are some of the features your most excited about releasing to the public?

With GT5, we're striving to redefine the racing game that we started with GT1. The game as a whole is completely new. But online functionality has to be at the top. We've worked so hard on it and we're hoping it's a hit.

This is one area where I hope GT5 really shines.

So do I. So little has been said about the multiplayer, but now we know how important it is: "has to be at the top". Great news!

Guys, just stop and think for a moment...

people in PD have given us 2 years ago smooth frame rates with huge polygon counts, and you don't expect to see 3d trees or skidmarks? Of course they will be there, it's nothing difficult to do, it takes a fairly small amount of time, the improvement will be great and people keep complaining about them. Why not have them? I am pretty certain that there will be 3d trees, and grass and skidmarks.. Do you think it would be sooo difficult for people modeling these cards to model - or even texture 8 cardboards for the trees instead of 2? Noone would even notice it's 2d :P

The rain physics mentioned above would be awesome, although it is highly unlikely for us to witness them in this installment, we know ps3 has the power, but I don't think it's THAT powerful, let alone it's hundreds of hours of programming

I can understand that these points are ridiculous for anyone reading it constantly but trees or skidmarks are only on the top of many details and aspects of the game which PD started to overlook on the hunt for best car graphics.

Yes, without a doubt. I'm really looking forward to it like a little kid. I still do play Prologue almost every day. I really love this game which can't be obvious to many contributors here. Only chose the way of constructive criticism which does sometimes a conflict here and there. It will end the day I start to play GT5. I will only enjoy then if they don't screwed the gameplay.

No, I'm a realist and I already stated it in the last column of my last post.

But it's no more question how much but how well done. Whole game system, replays with no rewind or camera change, all those missing effects of real world and really bad engine sounds are reminding us that we can see an evolution but no revolution about what is Kaz constantly talking.

Being nit picky will never make us happy, we should always focus on the good things to be satisfied and happy. If in 1 out of 10 you will focus on 1 bad thing instead of the 9 good things about it, you will never be satisfied or see the beauty. I think you get my point hehe

I am not being picky! I love GT5, I actually love it so much that I keep visiting gtplanet over 10 times a day to see the news about it. I still play other racing games (currently race on and gtr evo) but I still believe gt5 will be the king...

..for me, although I used to think that gt5p was divine using the g25, I realized that I like gtr better. It's a different experience actually, but for me the most important thing about gt5 is better g25 support and damage. I am 100% satisfied with everything else, I don't mind about not having skidmarks, not having full 3d trees, etc, although I am sure Kaz will please us in the end :) Geez, just take a look at gt5p that is like 3 years out now. If he has 200 people working on it, some of them are only PROGRAMMERS, so for the past 3 years they have been programming on a great base which is gt5p.

I love how he deflected skid marks as if they were of no concern, thats a good sign. :)

...of keeping to ignore during next five installments :)

Skidmarks won't be noticable to most people. Especially as 3 of the 4 available viewpoints don't show the back of the car.

So you are basically telling me I can't see skidmarks when driving a car in real life, right? Since I have no camera that shows the back of the car, right?

Who cares about reverse lights and skidmarks. The idea of Gran Turismo is to go forwards more often than you drive backwards. and in real life you'd be inside the car while driving it so you're not going to see skidmarks or reverse lights anyway.

Same as above.

True that 👍 And being the perfectionist that he is I'm quite surprised by his reaction.

Exactly my thoughts. 👍

Why are so many obsessed about skidmarks ? Forget about the skidmarks. Its just a SMALL detail. So many other details to be exited about :)

Details? Car's graphics, for example? Those are not details. But skidmarks, and reverse lights, as stupid as that sounds, are important. Even Forza 3 (Forza 3!) models reverse lights, a game that I'm sure you guys don't consider to be perfectionist at all. So why can't PD do it?

I find those guys asking for perfection very reasonable. If there are words like "perfectionist" or "redefining the genre" then GT5 has better not stay as just GT4 with better resolution and car model polygon numbers. It has to do things like volumetric smoke realistically suspensing into the air instead three fading sprites, realistic skidmarks with particles of gum kicked up instead of nothing, realistic light projection, rain racing with full effects, time of the day, trees with branches instead of just cardboards, much better AI driving in professional mode with full physics like you have to and greater sounds instead of that poor dead buzzing.

PS3 is really capable of all those things but PD are just not doing them. They seem to be too blinded by car and polygon numbers. Now it's too late but perhaps we could have progress in other things than car graphics in the sixth installment. I cross my fingers.

Same here, crossing my fingers too.

There will always be whiners.. It's just a fact, no matter how much you give them.

Even the worst videogame in the world has reverse lights, Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing. And you are calling us whiners.

Yes, without a doubt. I'm really looking forward to it like a little kid.

Same here, again. Hopefully PD will implement reverse lights at least. 👍 I couldn't more about car graphics than reverse lights.

Lucas: Well for me reverse light and skidmarks dont add anything to gameplay, MAYBE PD feel the same way..

The problem is that they are stupid things that make the game complete (IMO). Lucas, I'm with you!

Neither do better car's graphics, don't you think? The difference between those two and car's graphics is that they help complete the visual aspect of the game, as Pat_f40 just said before me without I even noticing. :ouch:

I think PD could lower the visiual quality on cars to make room for overall better graphic, so answer to that question is no..

Is Porsche involved in this edition?

Sadly no. There were some licensing issues.

Once again Porsche doesn't 'get it'...and loses another opportunity to introduce their brand to new emerging markets....

I build and race Porsches as a hobby. I currently have 3 in my warehouse. They are a car like no other in terms of engineering precision and performance capabilities.....

Hopefully PD can continue to backdoor the program with a RUF alternative....

Can you build one for me?

You should have some spare time with GT being delayed:)

OK...I'm 'snickering' over here....actually I just got back into GT5P over Christmas....took me two weeks to finish all gold....

I'm hooked again, dammit....

Great interview 👍 happy that they are working on the HSV-GT and the LFA - two cars I really wanted to be in, not so happy about Porsche being out, but the game is going to be packed so I can wait.

Sadly no. There were some licensing issues.

I wonder what the issues were exactly. I can't imagine a scenario that can't be worked out through negotiations with Porsche, EA or any other parties.

The only thing I can think of is that PD or EA are playing hardball & aren't making enough counter offers.

It wasn't Porsche's decision. They have a contract with EA and SONY thought EA was demanding too much money to "lease" the license.

I don't understand whether people don't see the advantage of having skidmarks or refuse to admit it with the sole purpose to defend the game regardless what the matter is. Of course you don't see your own marks while you drive, but you see the ones of car ahead of you, you see your skidmarks the next lap. It's especially funny when you see two black lines going in the gravel and a car stopped in the barrier.
That's your reason for skidmarks? Seeing your marks going into the wall?

Can you show us those beauties?

Personally I think that day/night light is something PD can reasonably reach, they have a well built 3d environment , adding lights should be just a matter of calculations (at least not so far from that).

Regarding weather changes I am quite curious to see how they'll do that. They are perfectionist so I wonder how they will handle:
1) Different rain strength on the track, meaning different water effect on the asphalt.
2) Drops running on the glasses as well on the rest of the car and falling down from it in a realistic way.
3) The racing line used by cars should be drier than the rest of the asphalt
4) Water raised by the cars running on the asphalt
5) People along the track with umbrellas and so on?
6) Wind should affect the environment as well (trees...)

Of course, compromises are needed.
We'll see... I can't wait for the TAS, I just hope that the bad yesterday news will not affect the planned GT5 show at the TAS

which professional racing series, races in the rain?

which professional racing series, races in the rain?

Pretty much all of them, with the exception of the american series Nascar, Indy... I believe that AMLS does race also in rain as the european and the original (Le Mans).

Forgot, was watching BTCC and they did indeed race in the rain.
I'm really disappointed that petty things like weather and damage are what have "delayed" this game for so long.

The Porsche thing kinda reminds me about pro evo soccer having the best game but not the licenses. Although I would have to add not anymore. I hasten to add I'm not looking for a FIFA / Evo argument but you gotta admit some similaritys.

That does look great!! Anything with a 'Kitt' style steering wheel gets a thumbs up from me! (Y) How much more awesome would it look without all the HUD elements too! Fingers crossed huh

Lucas: Well for me reverse light and skidmarks dont add anything to gameplay, MAYBE PD feel the same way..

They are maybe adding very little to gameplay but very much to replay.

YAY, at last a picture of the interior of a race car. GTR Super GT I think. Looks great.

This one I mean:

polyphony-digital-kazunori-yamauchi-gran-turismo-5.jpg

It is Motul GTR (GT500). That looks like the real cockpit, and some of the display on the steering wheel is working. And the view seems more expansive than the one I was driving in Forza 3- I brought up this image many times before but it's just too funny:

Oh jeez, i mean i knew this pic, but in direct comparison its just so.... ouch.
And yes, one is off-screen and the other a bad YouTube screenshot, but still, the difference is huge.

My Gosh that is a huge difference.

How can you drive that car in the bottom picture?

You can barely see anything.

Eeeek that forza inside shot is horrible, graphically, visibility...

GT5 will definitely be worth the wait.

I've got FM3, but I got the RROD just two days after I got it, so I have no real idea what forza3 is like.. I'm in no rush to fix the rotten thing either - just makes me appreciate Sony hardware more.

So is he saying weather isn't in?

The crab pincer hand things take up nearly as many screen pixels as the view through the windscreen.
