Change in XMB?

It's not a handy feature. It's just endless and annoying advertising that you cannot turn off as long as your console remembers the last time it updated the list on the internet. It's particularly annoying when the PS3 is left idle while you are doing something else and your focus is constantly distracted by such helpful tidbits as (exact full headline quotes) "download the demo now" or "now available on playstation store."
I have no issue with them wanting to give us such "updates," just put them in the "what's new" menu and I'll look at them when I'm curious about it. Forcing me to stare at them all day long is rude and offensive.

You can turn it off if its that annoying to you. Its been awhile since Ive done it, but I believe its somewhere in the settings menu. If its not there its in your account settings, but it can be turned off. I think it could also be turned off by clicking on it.

I've had my PS3 over a year now and if I'm remembering correctly it was there from then and I turned it off some how on day 2ish of owning the PS3. The novelty has kinda worn off and I spend no time at all in the XMB nor the PSN store these days. Will take a look into it later.
Edit: On a side note, my son did log into the US account the other day, he downed an app for YouTube which is half decent, sits nicely along the media section with iPlayer.

I'm in the UK, as is my brother and a few mates with PS3s and we've all had this feature for aaaaaages. That is until we figured out how to turn it off. My PS3 hadn't magically turned it back on when I went to download RDR today, either.

Thanks for the suggestion but I don't know, I've just been back through every setting I can find in the XMB settings menu and in the account menus and there's nothing. The only thing related is "display what's new" which only affects whether or not you automatically start in the "what's new" menu when you boot up. I can't find anything else that seems to reference the scrolling headlines at all. The only way I've ever found to disable it is to disconnect from the internet completely, which isn't a very good solution - and won't stop it immediately. If there is a way to stop it I would sure love to find out, and so would a few of my friends.
I'm sorry to rant but it really does drive me nuts. I cannot stand having advertising shoved in front of my face 24 hours a day, and turning the PS3 off and on constantly isn't the best of ideas. My PC doesn't bombard me with advertising just because it is turned on, and neither does anything else I have, radios and TV only do it if you tune to a place that has ads. So why should my PS3? It's not like I'm costing Sony any money by having the power on.
I suppose part of what bugs me is that it replaced such a nice and useful and unobtrusive window in the older versions. One that showed everything you needed to know at a glance and disappeared whenever you stopped actively doing anything. I'm pretty sure there also used to be another item that showed you basically the same things as the scroll, but you could turn that off if you wished.

It's one small line in the top right hand corner of your screen. How does that count as having ads thrown in your face?
How does it not?
It's ads. Moving to constantly attract attention. You can't have your PS3 turned on without them. Why exactly is there reason for it to be there besides to force us all to look at those ads?
Like I said, let me choose to look at them and there's no problem. Force me to, and there is.

Do passing cars frustrate you too? They're constantly moving and they're always in your line of sight. Why should I and everyone else be forced to look at them?
Choosing whether or not to look at something goes against almost everything in advertising. If they truly annoy you, simply don't take note of it and do whatever you wanted to do.

Just wanted to say there are 2 different versions of this message, the one which was always there which you could turn off in the xmb settings and this new one which appeared a couple days ago integrated with the time bar which cannot be turned off. At least this is my experience.
