Few cars have been as eagerly anticipated or made as big an impact as Honda's Civic Type R. The British-built sensation saw off all-comers in a first test against key rivals in Issue 946, and established itself as Auto Express's favourite hot hatch in the process.

Now there's worse news for the opposition. The Japanese firm has created the Type R-R, an even more focused version of the class winner, and a spiritual successor to Ford's Escort Cosworth - and it looks set to kick the Focus ST into touch! We were first to put it to the test.

Its basis is a standard Type R, but a series of modifications swell engine power and reduce kerbweight.

Honda has stripped out the cabin, removing anything that isn't absolutely necessary in the name of shedding the pounds. Gone is the stereo, and for the moment sound deadening is absent, too. The standard seats have now been replaced with figure-hugging racing items, and what these lack in adjustability they make up for by giving a sportier, lower driving position than in the regular car. The racy feeling from behind the wheel is suitably amplified when you press the dash-mounted starter.

As the engine bursts into life, it sounds far more raucous than that of the standard model. Bosses were adamant the original Type R didn't need buckets of power, yet engineers clearly couldn't help themselves when it came to specifying the R-R's motor.

Thanks to careful tuning, this car kicks out a tyre-burning 260bhp. It's the same basic i-VTEC 2.0-litre unit, but Honda has reduced friction on the internals and redesigned the camshafts. However, the greatest power gains have come from electronic improvements made using the ECU to operate the VTEC system.

Now, the engine doesn't go into fuel-sipping mode at lower revs, improving throttle response as a result. Meanwhile, the VTEC set-up cuts in at 5,100rpm instead of 5,400rpm. So rather than the perceptible increase in power you get when VTEC is unleashed on the standard model, the R-R's engine feels stronger throughout the rev range thanks to a 30 per cent hike in torque. Combining a compliant ride with taut handling is one of the standard hot Civic's greatest attributes. And although this car's suspension has been revised to give it more focused handling, it still rides bumps surprisingly well.

Probably the biggest change is to the steering. It has been made even more responsive, so the smallest input to the Alcantara-clad wheel has an immediate impact on the vehicle's position on the road. However, you do have to put your faith in the system because it's lacking in feedback, particularly at low speeds. Still, the car's handling remains nimble and sure-footed.

Another area that doesn't fall short on the standard model is the gear-change. Yet while the original is a manual, this car gets a six-speed sequential unit. You use the clutch to start off, and then simply pull the lever back to shift up and push it forwards to go down through the box.

Changes are made in only 80 milliseconds, which gives a brutal edge to the Type R-R, particularly as the steering wheel writhes with every upshift. Considering how much extra power is going through the front wheels, traction is remarkable. You'd expect to spend a lot of time sitting in a cloud of expensive tyre smoke, but engineers have been careful to tune the suspension so that does not happen. Instead, the car gets on with the job of entertaining its driver with even more purpose than the standard car.

Our drive has left us in no doubt that Honda's Civic is the undisputed hot hatch champion. With more power, it just gets better!
 
I knew honda were going to release a monster of a civic sooner or later and i'd heard about a rumoured Type-r-r a very very very long time ago! This just concludes that rumour as fact!
 
Looks awesome, but it looks like a race car to me, so there is probably very little chance that there will be a road version of it.


So that means, that we still only get the 201 hp Civic Type R which kinda sucks. Too heavy, not enough power ( times have changed ).


What I'd like to have is a mix between the actual production Type R and this car.


Manual Transmission, 100 kg less, reduced interior ( but with air cond. and stereo ) and a 2.2 or a 2,5 litre engine with 240-250 hp...
 
As far as i'm aware this is suppose to be a production model - but prob a Limited Edition or maybe will only exist in Japan like the legendary EK9
 
Do I get to drive around in it saying "Type-R RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!" ?
 
Type-R-R? Ai-yi-yi! You Tochigi (Japanese city where Honda's HQ is located) players are killing me! The Type-R namesake is usually that of a more powerful and more capable version of Honda models. When you make an upgrade of a performance model, then that's pretty gosh darned insane. I'm not going to go around and think "rice" as with when most people even see the Honda badge. If they say it's a performance model of a performance car, then I'm thinking that hood scoop may likely cool down the car when it gets hot at speed. I think if this machine was for real, the roof scoop would be larger to cool the car down at speed. I'd like to read more on functionality of this thing as I don't think this is rice in any sense of the word. I've seen worse. Remember when all of us saw this new Euro-grade Civic colored in yellow as a concept? Almost everyone was thinking this is one of the damndest abominations this side of the Ass-tec (Aztek). I'm one of the few people who don't think "boy racer" when seeing something like this. If it can deliver the goods and look good doing it, then who's to blame? I still think the hottest hatch is the mid-engined variants of the Renault Clio, by the way.

Anyhow, I'm giving this machine about 80% approval out of 100.
 
Awsome, now that's a tuned Civic I like. I'd keep that air scoop on the roof if it was functional. The interior of the new Civics is atrocious but I do love the exterior of these hatch Type-R's.

I can hear the ricers now: "I own a Type double R bitches!"

My approval rating: 90% out of 100% (it loses the 10% for the interior)

260 hp out of a 2 litre engine is a little over the top if you ask me. I see a lot of dead engines. I know people with the third engine in their S 2000....
 
Again, this is a very similar guise Honda applied to the NSX-R (Type-R) GT in 2005, but instead of keeping the GT they've added the 'R'.

I'm hoping this thing isn't sold at a sky-high price, but sense would tell that ripping out the interior would make it almost the same price as a standard Type-R. But of course, that isn't going to happen.


Granted, it looks nice; a replication of the NSX-R GT's design scheme but please Honda, does the 'GT' inspired roof scoop actually function and bring in some fresh-air to the cabin this time?
 
Something tells me it'll be priced completely out-of-touch with the hot hatch brigade over in Europe. 260hp naturally-aspirated 2.0L engine? six-speed sequential? A ton of other little tinkerings?

Come to think of it, this new version sounds like it fits the new BTCC rules almost too well. Those hood pins and rims make me think this isn't the actual long-rumoured Type R-R, but a blank version of the new racer that Honda would like to use as an example of what the platform's capable of. I'd expect it to be fairly toned down if it ever did make production.
 
This is not a racing car, it's a road car that has been tested on the road by Autocar which is all in the article in post 1. If it goes into production there will likely either be changes, or it will be a limited run car.

Great, now I'm going to see that stupid "roof scoop" tacked on to Civics in the next 3 months. Kids, if it's not on a rally car, and said rally car doesn't have air conditioning, then don't attach such nonsense to your car.

Like it doesnt happen already?? here in the UK its not just honda's that gets wasted with bumper extensions, roof scoops, spoilers and polyfilla! Infact i'd say honda's are one of the least modified cars because they are expensive to insure - so Saxo's, 106's, Fiesta's, Corsa's, Punto's, Astra's, 206's, 306's, Golf's, MG's, Rovers all get Ricer status over any Honda.

I chalk that up to the drivers. If you drive the S2000 nice and conservatively the engine will not blow up. 👍
 
260 Hp out of a K20 engine is quite a simple thing to do! Tuners have been doing it for years reliably so why wouldn't honda be able to as well? 👍

No. It's a silly-looking thing, at best. That roof scoop can't possibly make it to production, at least not if it's going to be sold outside of Japan. It would be laughed right out of the showroom, along with the ridiculous Ar-dee-ar-arr name. Although with 260HP, it could actually reach ludicrous speed.
 
Oh my god!!! How much do you think it would cost to import one of these to the states? I realize 2 of them would have to be crash tested(I'd just use 2 standard Civic hatches for that) in order for the car to be truly legal for importation and registration, but damn would it be worth it!
 
Know what the problem is - It doesnt matter how much effort and hard work Honda put into the Civic anymore - people like some of you guys are just going to continually rip into the Civic all because of one movie and a some Ricers and its not Honda's fault. Thing is though this will prob be the hottest hatch out there - and i would forget about Ricers getting there hands on one - this will be about £25-30 grand.

Get over it.

Fair enough i dont like the look of the new Civic too much but i certainly dont think this car is ridiculous looking - I agree about the roof scoop it is a bit wierd but maybe it has a purpose.

And i know what yous are all going to say in response but i really couldnt care - out of every manufacturer and car - theres only one that seems to get picked on.
