Ultimately I think it just depends on people's perception of the car, whether because of it's features, it's styling, being ahead of it's time, or so-on. There is truly some junk out there that people consider classics.

No idea what you meant, do you mean what makes a car four-wheel-drive? All four wheels are powered.

I'd say any car older than 25 years can be considered historic, but it must be important to be a classic.

Depends on what definition of 'classic car' you are using. In Europe a classic car is any post-war car. Probably over 20 years old too. Pre-war is a vintage. In the states I believe any car over 20 ish years old is classed as a vintage car. So in Europe a 'classic' is just any old car.

But I guess the idea behind the thread is really the question 'what makes an old car 'iconic?'

Most cars in NY are registerable as classics if they are older than 26 years old.

A Chevy Citation is not a classic.

"Classic" is such a nebulous concept, primarily driven by aesthetics and emotions more than anything else. Trying to define what makes a vehicle a "classic" is as fraught with issues as trying to define what makes one "cool".

Classics have something memorable about them which makes them popular. With muscle cars, it was the aggressive styling and high horsepower engines for a lost price. In the '50s, it was the intense styling. In the '80s, it was the rebirth of American horsepower. For example, see below.
