No. It only helps online loading and makes sure your connection is strong as possible.

If you're willing the spend the buck on it, a solid state drive will improve your loading times by about 40-50% on offline GT5. There's a few benchmark tests you can find by searching "SSD in PS3" on google. They run anywhere from $120-150 for a 120GB & $200+ for a 240GB; I opted out for a cheap $60 normal 500gig HDD.

I clear daily. If you remote race a lot, I would suggest the same.
