According to James May it was the world's first supercar.
It matches all of the criteria.
Fast: It was the fastest production vehicle in the world at the time.
Expensive: In London you could buy a very, very nice house for the same price.
Rare: Only 1400 were produced.
Unique: The Gullwing doors.
Beautiful: Check.

Funny cause Clarkson said on Season 18 Episode 1 that the Lamborghini Miura was the first real supercar.

It was the first "proper/traditional" supercar. It was the first mid-mounted, high-power, expensive, road-legal car.

The 300SL was basically the first supercar (the Cadillac Sixteen and Duesenberg SJ were pretty fast, but the supercar term didn't come till the 1950s I think), but, the layout we associate with supercars these days is MR, and the 300SL was FR.
