Cockpit view - IMHO overated and not so useful...

I absolutely love the cockpit view when in the McLaren F1, haven’t really tried it much in anything else.

All other cars I use the third person camera except the FGT, for that I use the hood came (the one where you see the front of the car) because I got very used to that view in F1 2010.
 
Its been a while since I've driven a real car (strange I know), so I've sort of forgotten what it all looks like when Im sat inside. But I just tried the Zoom and extra zoom (extra zoom seemed like a bit too much), but zoomed cockpit view seemed a lot more realistic, thoughts?
 
I've been using third person view almost exclusively since GT2 as I find it gives me the best view of the road ahead and allows me to drive with real precision. Everything else just feels unnatural to me, plus I like being able to actually see the car I'm driving.

However, I used cockpit view for the first time today driving a calsonic gtr around the nurburgring and I liked it a lot and will be using it again in the future.

Bumper view seems the most unnatural just because it is far too low down on the car and you can only see the tarmac directly in front of you.

But hey, that's just me and I suppose everyones different.
 
Wow. So it's impossible to "judge how to get the correct lines" when you have the best possible view of upcoming corners, an improved sense of speed (everything looks faster), no drop in visibility in wet conditions, and know exactly where the extremeties of your car are at all times?

I of course have nothing against people using the 3rd person view, but i find my experience with it very different than yours--particularly when it comes to sense of speed. To me there is almost no sense of speed in 3rd person view and everything seems much, much slower. This becomes a problem as it causes me to get way too hot into almost every corner. I also find it a lot less immersive especialy as it pertains to sound. in cockpit and bumper cam you can hear the change in speed as wind noise increases--this sounds particularly cool with my suround sound headphones.

anyways, everyone is entitled to their opinion, I just thought your mention of 'sense of speed' was interesting.
 
For the most part I only race with the bumper cam. However, I will use the cockpit view when test driving my Ferraris, Lamborghinis, and other supercars around Monza.

I can't stand seeing my car when I driving, in need to be either in it or bumper cam.

Its actually not. The "bumper view" isn't even bumper view at all but driver height with no cockpit. Check earlier in the thread there is proof.
 
When I want realism I use the cockpit view, but I mostly use third person.

I definitely agree with you. I use third person view almost all the time and I think it's slower too.

i agree. I love cockpit view, but it bothers me in cars where the roof is taking up a significant part of the screen, and some cars render this view as if the camera is almost in the back seat. I changed it to zoom and i think this is the best balance

Either way it seems too low for me but thats just from years of using third person.

Think I would get used to it if I used it often enough.

I use cockpit mode in all premium cars, but I must agree, when using the McLaren F1 Stealth Edition, the center seat position really is something special, that is one of my favorites just because it works so well in cockpit view….WOW!!!!

In my opinion, I think as well that the cockpit view in GT5 is not, what I would call authentic.

On PC, I played sims like GT Legends GTR Evolution or rFactor and racing in cockpit view was the same way possible than in hood view.

My lap times never differed. But in GT5 my cockpit-view lap times are mostly 2 to 3 seconds slower than the hood view- lap times.

I have the feeling, that there is no translation of what th car is doing, when you drive in cockpit. I can´t see the suspension-movement of the car or how it reacts on track surface like I can see it in hood.

Also the impossibility to set you own cockpit view position is a big fail. In race cars you can narrowly see over the dashboard onto the track...but where is the overview? Why can´t i set the seat way back or forward, up or down to configure my own view position to get the right feeling?

Bumper cam is faster, there is much more movement from the suspension, and you can get a better fell for what the car is doing.

In the cockpit view, apart from the (way overdone IMO) "head shake" it feels very static, and you don't get a good impression of suspension movement.

This is iRacing, probably the best simulator available on the market, as you can see the bumps happen ON THE CAR not in the whole word outside, GT5 actually do it the exact opposite if you know what I mean. That's why PD system doesn't work perfectly and they need to imporve it, making the car tilting not the whole track outside, or of course give us the chance to switch it off that will be easier for them.

Bumpercam is and always has been where it's at.

Rofl at anyone rocking the 3rd person view to while I'm in here. Shame they wasted so much time doing the interiors.
 
I'm probably the only one who finds it easier to drive with the cockpit view.

Anyways, the cockpit view should remain in ANY vehicle simulator. It gives a level of immersion that no other view can achieve. I have mapped the buttons R2 and L2 buttons on my DS3 to look around the cockpit, thus solving the low FOV issue.

And at the end of the day, it's your choice whether to use it or not.
 
i prefer cock-pit view and that's also why i prefer the premium cars, it's a bummer that the standard cars don't have cock-pit view but it doesn't bother me that much.

This exactly, the shaking is ridiculous and i find myself using less and less cockpit view because of it. iRacing nailed it.
 
I loved the cockpit on GT5P using my Amuse S2k to kill on the HighSpeed Ring. I can't stomach it now on GT5.
 
Hmm I rather use the hoodcam. I love watching the cockpit view, because of all the details that I'll most likely never see in real life, but racing in it, nah.
 
if your hating it so much change it to the narrower perspective and i must say it's top notch. Yes im one of the view who say positive things about the game, sue me :)
 
I like the cockpit view but I do prefer the bumper cam. I feel the view is a bit restricted but I must admit, it is really cool to see all the dashboard instruments working!

I have changed the view to "narrower" and that helped though.

Even if the moved the door pillar a bit it would maybe help??
 
The view had so much potential but they really screwed it up with the shake to the point that unless on smooth straight road, it becomes almost impossible to focus on the road. Forza 3 pulled of the in-car view wonderfully, unfortunately GT5 not so well.
 
Cockpit camera only in premium cars and if it's standard then I use the third person camera where you see the back of the car (I don't use the bumper camera).
 
Have to agree that on most cars the cockpit view is pretty useless, where once again PD thought they outdid themselves, and instead half-assed yet another aspect to the game. IMHO, Need for Speed: Shift's in-game cockpit views completely DESTROY everything about this game's cockpits. From visual detail, to reactions, everything. I think the PD team just locked themselves away for a bit too long, and is a little out of touch with the gaming community of 2011.
