I pm at a game stop right now. Do you guys recommend thrust master T1 80?

If they only will they have and they’re telling me that it’s the best one you can buy retail without having to order one. But, I don’t mind ordering one if this one isn’t great

If it's the Thrustmaster T80 you mean, don't buy that. It's the lowest of the low and quite old.
Thank you. You saved me

I was so excited to get a wheel that was all they had.

You don’t by any chance, know who else sells wheels in their stores do you? If not, I guess I have to order one from Amazon or direct from somewhere else

Go with a g29 or thrustmaster t150 pro. Be prepared to spend around $200-250 for a decent wheel. Look on amazon, Logitech has good warranty, so I would go for a g29. Also you'll probably need a decent wheel stand if you don't have something decent and sturdy to clamp the wheel on to, a decent cheap one you can find for $80-100. Welcome to the rabbit hole of sim racing.

I’m definitely willing to pay that much. I am addicted, to say the least.

When I watch the videos that people post they’re all using wheels and it looks like so much fun I know I’m missing something .

Rabbit hole, indeed!

Good thing you didn't buy that bro. You would have regretted it.
I wouldn't know which stores around by you sells wheels. You would have to check around. Other than that you can check the old faithful Amazon. Beauty with that is you get the benefit of reading helpful info about the product and also customer reviews which helps a lot to make a more informed decision.

I concur what Sentry says. Either one would suffice. Again, before you make a decision, check out Amazon for more product info and customer reviews. It's the first thing I do.
As for the wheel stand. For sure. Not expensive either. Check out a wheel stand named "Wheel Stand Pro" and check which one would be compatible for whichever wheel you buy. I'd buy the wheel and Wheel Stand Pro one time. Win-Win.

I was almost ready to ditch PC2 in favor of GT Sport since I was having so much trouble controlling the car in PC2. Then someone suggested that I ditch my PS4 controller STICKS and use it's built in motion sensor instead. Wow I could not believe the difference in how much easier it is to drive the vehicles while almost maintaining the feel of a racing wheel. Besides I do not have a budget of around $500 for a nice racing wheel and the stand setup as well. So far I totally love PC2 using my current setup on PS4 Pro using the motion sensor. Just a suggestion slthree.

I never even gave that thought. I can’t wait for dinner to end so I can slink upstairs and try this

Do you hold the controller like a wheel with the sticks facing your chest?

Or, do you hold it flat with the sticks pointing up?

@slthree , racing with a controller may be a bit tricky for most at first.....not as easy as with a wheel per se, and may require some special configurations in order to better handle re the motion sensor thingy. I searched and found this vid for you to assist. It's a pretty recent uploaded vid and the racer seems to know his stuff. Check out his configurations and input. It may help. Also watch the vid to see how he races with it. He seems to handle it very well.

I hold the controller in my hands at a 45 degree angle and steer the car like a regular wheel. It takes a short while to get used to this setup, but it sure is hecka lot easier to steer the car!

It is very easy to get addicted - especially once you have got a wheel as it makes driving games so much more immersive and enjoyable. It is important not to let it take over your life. I have several friends who didn't control their hobby with the result that they gave up. That normally happens to people who haven't been able to quickly find a balance - a wife / girlfriend or parent etc. normally makes them aware that other things are suffering.

Try and set some personal limits / rules. Obviously these will vary depending on age and personal circumstances - I limit my gaming to 2 hours a week plus an hour or two of practise. If I have more time (e.g. a day off I allow myself some gaming time as a reward e.g. after domestic chores or working in the garden or doing some physical activity - I'm an old geezer so it is difficult to stay reasonably fit!).

I agree with what has been said about wheels and stands - I recommend a Wheelstand Pro plus either a Thrustmaster T150 (version with good pedals), T300 (version with good pedals) or Logitech G29.

I don't know what country you are in so it is difficult to comment on retail options.

I suggest getting a wheel and stand as soon as possible - the longer you spend with a controller (normally) the longer it takes to transition to a wheel - plus you are missing out on the massively greater enjoyment of playing with a wheel. Personally I was hopeless with a hand controller - hands just too big and clumsy so I got my first wheel within 2 weeks of getting GT5.

Once you get past the addiction phase and start rationing / controlling your gaming to wife / family acceptable levels it may be time to join a league. Because I only have a small amount of time my gaming experience has to be top quality - so for my two hour per week fix I race online with friends in a league and any extra spare time is the odd bit of practise.

Good luck and enjoy your hobby, but be careful not to let it take over!

Came home today with a T150 thrust master. There happened to be a Best Buy on the way to one of the offices that I had to go to and I walked in and picked one up

I’m losing my mind because it’s really hard to use and I know it supposed to be easier than controller.

I finally mounted it to really solid table so that’s not a problem but this thing keeps kicking in the opposite direction when I’m turning, and if that’s what real racecar drivers go through then they are much better athletes than I thought

But, the other problem is every time I go to step on the break my pedals go flying forward, slipping out from under me

I’ve ordered a wheel stand pro from Amazon. It won’t get here for a few days but right now I’m struggling

It will take a while to transition to a wheel - for some people its a few hours, for others it may take a few weeks. I always suggest starting a game again - either on a new account or if you have the discipline use the same account, but redo everything you have done before. By the time you reach the same point in the game and have the same amount of hours of gaming you will have transitioned. I assure you it will be worthwhile.

At first try sticking with one car at one track that you know well and just keep plugging away. I recommend something slow where things happened slowly so you have time to make corrective inputs - try the Ford Escort RS1600 Road. Remember slow in fast out and very small delicate movements - when you get the hang of it most of your steering will be with the throttle and brakes and you will only be turning the wheel a very small amount.

Once you have a wheel it is probably best to turn off all driver aids so you can start feeling the car - it will be worth it for the extra control you will learn.

Thank you for your thoughtful post.

I’m in America, Florida to be more specific. I came home with a T150 and the pedals seem a little bit cheaply made Is there a black plastic and not the silver metal ones that I’ve seen in other people’s pictures

I have 15 days to return it if I’m not satisfied with it

The T150 RS Pro is the version with the good pedals - 3 metal ones instead of 2 plastic ones.

Just looked at my box and it is T150, not RS Pro

I guess it’s just true that the ones you find in retail or not the highest quality. Now that I know I have to get one through Amazon is there something better than that the T150 Pro?

The Logitech G29 seems to have a better reputation for quality than the Thrustmaster T150. The G29 comes in 2 packages - with or without an H pattern shifter. If you plan on using a shifter it will work out cheaper to get that package, but if you order that one make sure that your Wheelstand Pro comes with the necessary shifter mount.

The next wheel up from that is the Thrustmaster T300 - you would need the version with good pedals (T3PA or T3PA Pro). There is an optional H pattern shifter TH8A and with the T300 there are changeable rims which you can fit for F1 driving etc. - it all starts to get a bit expensive!

It is worth seeing what other people recommend - you can look at the threads in the Sim racing Hardware section or do a search. Personally as a starter wheel I would be tempted by a Logitech G29, because of its better reputation, but whatever wheel you get, make sure you get an extended warranty - if possible 3 years. Personally I use a Thrustmaster T500 + shifter + change of rims, but I started with a Logitech wheel (DFGT) - luckily both have been reliable, but I know quite a few people with Thrustmaster wheels who have had problems with wheel or pedals and had to get them replaced.

Until I get a new wheel I’m going to fight with this one. Can you recommend any settings that would help me with the wheel until I get used to it?

If I were you I wouldn't bother getting an H pattern shifter or for that matter using the foot clutch pedal to change gears. But that's just me. I use the paddle shifters just below the wheel within easy reach for changing gears instantly without having to do other stuff. One less distraction. Works for me.

Start with low force feedback levels, most new wheel users start with too high ffb and wheel does weird things and you miss subtle effects. Gradually increase ffb once you get a feel. There's a difference between cars as well. Think Indycar (no power steering) was modeled as strongest.

I'm loving this thread. Reminds me of when I made the switch to PCars One. I was already a wheel user, but fed up with the nonrealistic aspects of GT6 - especially the super-fast-paddle-clicking downshifts, that were actually rewarding. (Oh, that's still prevalent in GTSpurt.)

Anyway, I remember struggling for the couple weeks with determination to break all my bad habits. Mission accomplished. I never looked back. Well, maybe a little, but I'm still devoted to PCars.

Fun thread to follow, that was my original point.

Nice to see people pitching in to help too.

Sorry, maybe your two hours are all you have, but how many people don't spend any extra time on other things that they could trade for gaming if they wanted to? Vegging in front of the TV? Scrolling through social media?

I opted not to let TV or Netflix take over my life, like many of the sort of people who proclaim videogames to be a "waste of time" have done. I also make an effort to pry myself off the internet when it's not doing me any good. Ergo, I have plenty more than two hours per week without neglecting anything. Not a choice for everyone, but it's a choice.

I just see no reason to assume gaming should be the first thing to cut if you enjoy it as much as sitting in front of the tube, if that's something you do. I think sim racing is even more productive than some other games, and I think people shouldn't be ashamed to embrace it in lieu of binging on TV shows or whatever. ;)

Make sure to calibrate it properly and load the stable setups remove the dead zones and always press your peds fully before getting to the track and maybe stick to raw ffb for now the others self adjust as you do a few laps I hear ? and yes as above don't have massive ffb lvls that you have to fight just to get around you will find the car drives you not the other way around ;)... good luck :)

This is what I'll be doing when I fire up PC2 after many months absence. I use motion control for GTS, its fabulous and the next best thing to a wheel.

Right on brother :)

It's funny you say that. When someone asks me what I do with my spare time I either lie or make sure I differentiate sim racing from gaming. I feel like there is a stigma attached to gaming. "It's not real so it is childish". TV is not real either but you are just watching it and not taking part so somehow it isn't judged the same. Go figure.

I agree that sim racing is productive. In addition to getting a sense of achievement I have also learned an awful lot about racecraft and tuning. I've spent hours reading forums and watching you tube vids trying to understand what is actually happening with my car. How does it work and how can I use that knowledge to my advantage.
