Is there a difference between these two or are they the same thing?

Concept Cars are dream machines. Prototypes are testbeds for a production car in the near future.

Although most everything nowadays is called concept cars.

Concept Cars are company show cars to be viewed by the public at auto shows & prototypes are anything one of a kind.

Prototypes don't necessarily have to be one-of-a-kind. Often, there will be several identical prototypes.

Essentially, the prototype is a pre-production version of a car that is nearing production. A concept car is an experimental vehicle, which serves both as a concept for a new vehicle and as a testbed for advanced features.

And more often then not, there are prototypes of concept cars.

Check the Nissan 350Z as an example.

Concept cars tend to be, but not always, mock-ups without fully working mechanics. Built to check the publics reaction to the styling.

Prototypes are fully working 'test-beds' to make sure the mechanicals will work in the final production version.

Look up concept in a dictionary. It is the same hting for a car. It is an idea.
