GTPlanet, hi.

I'm playing Gran Turismo 3 right now. In the Car Dealer section. Going to check out some cars that can't be bought. Machines for show, not for sale. The majority of them are concept cars. Like I'm looking at the RX-8 before its production release. Mitsubishi and their Lancer VII Rally Prototype before its release. Then you think about non-America's Gran Turismo Concept. Often times, I keep seeing "why are concept cars even in Gran Turismo?" So let me see if I can defend concept cars. You may also use this thread to talk about other concept cars, even concept cars of the past that were either too good to be true, or looked better than what the production model looked like. Anyhow, here goes.

Allow me to defend concept cars. Now, there are concept machines, and while they may be ugly to some people, I think regardless that it's not about the looks, but it's what it offers and what cues will be offered in future models. I mean, look at the Cadillac Cien. Perhaps the Cadillac XLR is proof of part of its looks. The Isuzu Vehicross looked almost like its concept. And also the Honda Element gave a view as to how the Element would look. Some think the Element is ugly, but it's actually pretty interesting to me. GT Concept featured a Civic Type-R that we have in America as the Si, I think it is. But the Civic in the game resembles the one I seen at the Houston Auto Show. I like the rally-style shifter on the dashboard. I mean, I may think that concept cars can look whimsical, ugly, or some even beautiful, that's not the point. You're not going to have concept cars at the auto dealer. So, don't feel bad that a concept is ugly. I mean, I can sincerely tell you that a concept will be some indication of what a future car will be like. I mean, it's like an upcoming game. You get an idea as to how an upcoming game will be like with a concept in the form of a demo. But with a concept car, you get an idea as to how a future car will look, or if a car that will be in production that you can buy off the lot, or whatever.

I'm speaking in a calm, caring voice when I say this. But, I don't think concept cars are crap. Concepts can actually be entertaining. They can give you an idea of what the future shows for either a new car or some concepts. Concept cars are the focus of this topic, so come on in and talk concepts. Attack or defend them. Share past concepts of interest. Go ahead...

actually, some concept cars can be really interesting. i'll put som on that I found....here is the DC design GO

Some concepts I like to look at, others I don't. What peeves me off is when a company can create a concept car that looks absolutely gorgeous yet when it hits production, they have enough small modifications to the original design that it almost completely loses it's appeal. Case in point, look at the 2005 mustang and the concept of it. The '05, though still a beautiful car, just doesn't look anywhere near as good as the concept. I understand that most changes are done to meet safety standards or to reduce manufacturing costs but sometimes it just makes me sad when I see a car reaching production and I think of what could have been.

Another annoyance of concepts that I have is when companies try to recreate names but completely miss what made the original a timeless classic in the eyes of many from the time of it's release. The new Shelby Cobra is an excellent example. The only comparison that can be made with the new concept and the original is the monstrous engine and excellent handling. Another excellent example of a not too great redesign is the Chevy Impala. Though it looks ok, it just doesn't have what attracted me to the original 50's and 60's models. On the other end of the spectrum, there have been redesigns done right too. Take a look at the new mustang (not as great as the concept but still beautiful), the Nissan Z, the GT500. I'm sure there are TONS of other redesigns out there but my knowledge of cars from the past is limited.

Regarding the end of the first post, I don't think ANYONE thinks concept cars are "crap". People that thinkthat they are stupid are downright ignorant. They don't see what the purpose of a concept is. There are a zillion examples of a car to be publicly accepted as a crap car, but upon release, they sell like hotcakes. The PT Cruiser being the first to come to mind. I don't think anybody liked the look of it. They're about as popular as Civics these days...

Also the mention of concept cars that really didn't turn out to be as spectacular on the streets, the first is the Chrysler Crossfire. A stunning car that really brought back memories for some, upon release, a rebadged CLK, not to mention the styling was toned down a LOT.

stunning...

I look at a book that I got in 1995, in the back there is a concept section. There are so many concepts beleived and even said to be ugly or <negativeadjective>, and now they are on the streets, seen frequently. Just take a gander into a popular car magazine (Car and Driven, Road and Track etc) from 1999 or so. All of those cars are on the streets. They all look a lot like the concepts in the mags.

If anyone is looking for a good read about car design (where the ideas come from etc) pick up or check out the book How to Design Cars like a Pro. It is not an instructional, tutorial typed book like the name suggests. There is some, but most of it is explaining what makes a good "concept" or design. There is also about 50 pages explaining the best and worst designs ever. Also a section on "Sketches to Reality".

There is so much I could say about this subject, car design, but nothing too much is coming to mind. I'll add more if anything comes to mind. For now here is the nicest design I've seen in a while, the Land Rover LR3, on exhibition at the New York Auto Show. BTW the site it is on is top-notch for stuff like this.

Elise, had that concept been some other car, it would probably be the ugliest Cadillac of the new age. Of course, the only thing I like about Cadillac was their LMP1 sportscar.

I'd also like to invite players of "Gran Turismo Concept" to mention concepts in here. For example, how about a 400hp Honda (Honda Dualnote)?

From a racing standpoint I think it's pointless to put concept cars in but for me being an avid fan of cars and car design I think it's great they put concept cars in. Moreso in GT Concept, It's great to see them in a "virtual reality". To be able to see and even interact with them in action is great. 👍 I wish I could play GT Concept. :banghead:

I don't think that concepts should be included in any game. These cars are what we see at Geneva, Tokyo, Detroit. They are what we see. Maybe the company is showing off some technical advancement, but other than that, we are taking a look at what the next cars will look like. A game like GTC is displaying what they look like, but mostly what they feel like. What you see at the shows is pure aesthetics. They have not refined the chassis, handing, half the time the cars don't have motors in them... Why should we be able to drive something when all we know about the car is what it looks like and some rough performance figures. I don't think it's fair to the manufacturers to have the gaming industry drive a car engineered (performance wise) by some game developpers. They simply don't know how, if they did, they would be working in the auto industry. Take a look at video games where the cars are designed by the producers of the game. They are always ass-ugly with many flaws (overhangs, proportions etc)...

Mind you, I haven't played the GTC games, so I wouldn't know how these cars are and who programmed them. I can speak from experience that the Mazda RX8 in GT3 was a poor car, while IRL it is actually quite a lot better than the game's programmers portrayed it.
