Controller drivers: Analog stick or d-pad steering?

I preferred Analog stick steering in GT3 & GT4, but GT5 steering is different. I find it difficult to steer smoothly with either, but I generally think I steer more smoothly with the d-pad.

I'm kind of surprised you're having a hard time with the steering because personally I feel being smooth on the throttle is the harder part (without tcs etc). To answer your question, analog because it allows for more preciseness.

Anolog, just not for the throttle. I'll stick with the X button for that (I hate the triggers for that and brake, if you were wondering..).

I actually went the other way, I was always a D-pad and X & O button driver until GT5. I had tried the analog stick for steering several times but I never got comfortable with it. I was really struggling with the NASCAR special events with the D-pad so I tried the analog stick. Much smoother and precise and I haven't looked back. :D

If your struggling with the shocking triggers on the PS3 pads... Get to asda and they have these packs with grips and trigger addons. The grips suck but the control you get from the new triggers is 10x better than b4. They cost about a fiver.

The stick for steering...that's a for sure. I use the right stick now for gas/brake because if you concentrate on being smooth it's more subtle than any button. I was using the triggers for awhile. They seem more like left foot breaking technique, but harder to find a config for gear changes that way.

For the first time i am using sticks and triggers , i could never get to grips with it before but i find it much more precise now

It beggars belief that some people are still using ancient button technology on a game like this! Sticks are fine, triggers are fine. I can hold the gas at 20/40/60/80% without problem, although if your controller has seen a lot of use the triggers will become loose which affects their sensitivity a lot.

I use the Analog stick and I've been able to adapt sensitivity onto my X Button technique and can pull off pretty good times in the wet using this method. I don't feel its the button but the driver's reaction to how to use it.

I had a go using the X button when I got the game, and although there's a certain level of pressure sensitivity you still end up with a lot of cheesy throttle tapping through long corners.

I might try the triggers later today as a comparison, but even throttle tapping is ok for me because it feels more engaging.

R2 for acceleration
L2 for braking
Left analog stick for steering

I got used to it in Racedriver GRID and Dirt 2, aswell as other racing games. That's the best solution for me, but I can use the right stick aswell :)

For everyone who uses the triggers for gas/brake, what do you use for shifting? I would probably switch to the triggers if I could find something comfortable for shifting. So far, L2/R2 have been my long time favorites for shifting...

I use the left stick for my steering. I use the L2 & R2 for accelerating and braking just because I got used to that on Formula1 2010.

What I do dis-like (which I do think may just be me thanks to my dog chewing my controller!) is the fact that when you press R2, full throttle seems to be at about half a press instead of a full press, I mean, it isn't a problem, but I just would of thought, full throttle would equal a full press?

As for gear changing, I don't think there is anything comfortable if you use R2 & L2, I like R1 for looking behind, and I like L1 for opening that edit menu thing, then D-Pad buttons for navigating the menu. Triangle is your traditional reverse which I like, O for the handbrake which I rarely use as I haven't done any drifiting yet, X and square control the lights, so maybe put high beam on O and gear up and down with X & square?

I'd only ever drive manual with a steering wheel now I think (If I ever get one)

Square for upshifts and Cross for downshifts, works like a charm :)

It's not your controller. The same problem was already in the prologue but they didn't bother to fix it for retail. I can live with it but it's really annoying in a high powered car without tcs when you're trying to come out of corners smoothly and without losing speed too much. :yuck:

I've always used the d pad for steering, up until gt5. The analog just works better for me now, but only for steering, not for gas and brake.

D-Pad for steering (or sometimes the Left Joystick)

X for accelerating (gas)
Square for braking
(i could never getting used to using the Right Joystick for Gas and brake)
(i could never getting used to using the L2 / R2 triggers as for Gas and Brake) (a la Xbox)

As for shifting up and down, i feel more natural re-mapping those to L1 and R1 ;)

So there is my set up when i play GT5 from my bed,
otherwise i have the cockpit waiting for me downstairs in the living room :)

I am thinking about changing my layout to this format, it seems like it'll be a good way for better throttle control than using X, it is just a matter of getting used to it. I feel it is a bit "anti" GT to switch to that format though... I'll just have to get over that feeling LOL

For some reason, i find much comfort in reading that from someone!!
I really thought i was the only one to think that way...
but you prove me wrong, and i am very happy!

It must be the fact that a racing Game so unArchaic as GT would still default, map the accel/brake to buttons! But i love it, and i still use it to this day.

I guess i somehow wants that "tradition" to last.

I dont want to switch to triggers, sticks are ok, but no triggers :P

Haven't used the D-pad for steering since the sticks were first brought in. I still use X for throttle because it's carried over from my years of this method on '4. Triggers for shifting.
I find no loss in sensitivity using the X for throttle due to years practicing this method, same goes for breaking with the square button.
I guess it is all a matter of personal preference.

D-pad and buttons, I just got used to them by playing way to much GT when I was younger on the original PS.
