GT was the only racing game I played for years. Got super used to the D Pad and x for throttle and square for brake.

Then I got F1 2010. The traditional GT configuration on a Dual Shock is awful for that game so I switched to to the left analog stick for steering, kept x for throttle and used R2 for brake. I got much faster in F1 2010 after switching the controller to this configuration from their default configuration.

When GT5 came out, I immediately changed the configuration of the controller to the configuration I'd been using on F1 2010 and it's been great! I love having the brakes on R2. Lots of control over the brakes on the cars that have a fine line between controlled braking and complete lock-up.

It's also nice to just be able to keep my thumb on or just hovering over the x button rather then having to go back and forth between it and the square button.

Using DS3.

I'd love to have a steeringwheel but I'm sorry what? €400+ for one? Hehe lol sorry no thanks. You know....you can take your girlfriend out to dinner REAAAAAL fine for that.

Been using the controller ever since GT1, but I'm going to be switching soon to the wheel. I played with the wheel at a friends house and loved it.

My controller setup (works perfectly imo):
L2 Brake/R2 Accelerate
L1 Shift Down/R1 Shift Up
Left Analog to Steer

no offence to those with a wheel and all that stuff but if my girl came home and saw me sitting in front of the TV with a wheel she would probably kick my a**. To be honest, I would probably kick my own a**, lol.

There's nothing wrong using a DS3 for GT5. I also use it to grind up xp and race online.

I use the DS3. I just use it as the standard. using X and O for throttle and brake. Shifting with L2 and L3 and steering with the left stick. Last night I tried to change it to throttle and brake with the L2 and R2 buttons... but that didn't worked out to well.. But I think you can be quicker with those,. Maybe sometimes when I cant win any more I will try to change it, or buy a wheel.

First off I have to mention that I purchased the trigger extensions from Pelican and the analog extension from Kontrol Freeks and they've made a big difference as far as more precise control goes.

This is my setup-

R2 = brake
L2 = gas
Right analog up/down = shifting
Left analog = steering
R3 + face buttons = in race tuning

The others are like L1 = reverse, R1 = hand brake, Dpad + face buttons for other functions.

As for the seasonal races I golded all of them first two rounds and only needed skid assist on the RX-7 and Focus ones. I was about 10sec. off first in each without it. Although if I had played around with the tunes longer I probably could have got them.

I've always used a controller for Gran Turismo 1 to 5, one day I'll get a wheel, but got no where to put it so going to carry on with the DS3 for a while longer.

It's a great feeling when you race and beat some loudmouth with a wheel who can't drive, but thinks he can, just because he's got a wheel. 👍

I use the triggers for brake/throttle and square/circle for shifting. The right thumbstick is set for freelook. Basically the forza 3 setup.

I haven't run into any problems. I'd probably be faster with a wheel, but I doubt that's what's holding me back. I've gotten gold or silver on the licenses if I try, the seasonal events have been fairly easy, or at least I don't think I missed 1st place due to the controller.

same ere.:sly:

I use a DS3 controller.
Right analog stick - up = throttle
Left analog stick - steering
L2 - brake
R2 - shift down
R1 - shift up

Does the job for me. Golded every seasonal event, every licence and nearly every special event, and every A-Spec race i've done.

Having only got the DFGT the other day, I used my controller for all previous GT games. My setup for the last 3 (HD, GT5P and GT5) has been L2 and R2 for Brake and accelerate. And then L3 and R3 for the gears. It was a good system, it seemed to work well for me anyway.

I have always used a controller. I use:

Right stick = acceleration/braking
left stick = steering
L2 = Gear Down
R2 = Gear up

X and square and L3 always. I've used dualshock since I was about 5. Why would I want to go through the whole process of learning how to use a wheel? The Vettel challenge is the only thing I've found really difficult so far, so clearly it's not such a disadvantage as some people make out. (but I only unlocked it about an hour ago so.. :P) (please tell me I'm not the only one who failed first time by crashing straight into the pit wall >____>)

I've golded everything with the DS3. People seem to think its a massive disadvantage but im not convinced. I looked at some of the time trial leaderboards and you still see the odd DS3 in the top 10. Its just ''most'' serious gamers use a wheel.

One person claims to:

Most seem to feel it's truly impossible. I get the impression people start with confidence and almost always give up after Bronze.

Hey thats me! I know theres doubt but im not fussed.

I nearly gave up to. Once you own the car and have driven it for 6000 miles it becomes much, much easier. Things don't feel fast anyone. Patience is the key

I use a wheel, though i did some events with a controller. When i play with the controller i use X/Square for throttle and brake and L2/R2 for the gears, the buttons are all pressure sensitive anyway, i got a nack for controlling the throttle really well using the X button back in GT4. I will say though that its hard to go back to using a controller after getting a wheel, its so much more enjoyable and you can drive smoother for the most part.

Left analog = steering

This is my exact setup now. I just switched from the gas/brake on the right stick and using manual about 2 weeks ago. I also just started turning off all the assists. Wow that was a tough transition but I am playing a totally different game now. I still down shift when I should up shift occasionally but I am getting much smoother laps now. I have also started trying the equivalent of left foot braking now which is interesting. I don't know what I am doing exactly but it somehow feels smoother.

I just got gold on the last kart race. It took me several tries but I got there. I found that I had to barely ease off the throttle at certain points in autumn ring to hold the line

I use my wheel and when I don't feel like setting it up, a controller. I use L2 and R2 for braking and throttle. However, has anyone noticed that you get 100% throttle and 100% brake when you press either trigger button about 75% of the way through its travel range? When you get to 50-75% of the triggers travel range, the brake and throttle goes from about 50% to 100% application. The sensitivity is not uniform throughout. This was also a problem from Prologue that has carried over.

I had a wheel during GT4 but it broke so for GT5 I am back to the contoller. Not really complaining as I can sit in my awesome comfy chair and play. I like this support group.

I've being using a controller for years!

x and square for acceleration and braking and left analog stick for the steering.

Oh yea! I have to check this out now. I have been having problems with throttle control out of exits. Sometimes I would have too much sometimes not enough. I though it was me, but maybe its my controller. I would suddenly go from not enough to way too much throttle which has made me gun shy now on the gas.

Maybe I should switch back to throttle / brake on the right stick. But then where do I put the shifter?

Left stick for steering , right stick for gas / brake. I'm surprised more of you guys don't use this setup. The day the analog controllers were introduced was a turning point for me , haven't looked back since. Gold on all seasonals so far too.

100 % this.

I drive with a controller, in fact I play videogames with a controller since the early 8-bit days, and yes I've been able to gold some of the Seasonal events (not many though) and came in second on a bunch of them...

I tried playing with a wheel some times, but I don't think the feeling is the same, I mean, you look at a screen and sit on a chair, the wheel and pedals are the only parts of a car that feel like a car, but you're still missing all that feedback from your legs, back, neck, eyes and ears (even though you're looking at the race and hearing it through the speakers), my brain is not able to compensate for these lost feelings (even with "force feedback" enabled, mind you)...

Sorry to bump in on this, but you just triggered an old memory here :)

I used to drive with a wheel on my 8bit system, playing Turbo on a ColecoVision

:D

Controller is fine for me too. Except for the Vettel challenge.

I have RA options mapped out. Only thing function that I lose of importance is the wipers, but even then I can live without them.
I use X and square as gas and brake respectively. I figured out the pressure sensitivity of the buttons while playing GT4.
Left analog stick for steering.

I may eventually get the wheel for the experience but for now I am happy using a DS3.

Controller, here. Had a wheel for the PS1 back in the day, but that's it, not got enough disposable income being at 6th form with no job, lool. Saying that, my current controller is an absolute mess due to raging at other games. X and Square for me as I forgot to change it to R2/L2 at the start. Use R2/L2 on every other driving game though.

Hello, My name is Marco. Ive been a controller user for 11 years. I used it earlier this morning. I hope I get on the wheel wagon soon. I just bought an FGT and F10 and I know I can be faster with a wheel. Other cars though, I'm alright with the controller.

I'm a controller driver. I can afford a wheel but I don't plan on spending so much money for it.
