I currently also use DS3. I have the money to buy a wheel, but just don't feel like going through the process of picking one up, and setting it up in my room. Not to mention, my girlfriend would probably disapprove of it anyways. I use the standard controller setup, but i wonder if buying a wheel is worth it. How much greater can I possibly drive. I golden all the S license tests, and special events. I had no problems with the seasonal events either. I've yet to unlock Vettel challenges so we'll see. If anybody has any suggestions on a wheel setup I'd gladly accept any.

I'm a X button throttle user.
Hardcore is my middle name.
My cars punt you out the lane.
he whines and call me lame.
I tell him you'd do the same.
Then I kick him out the game.

i use the right analog stick for stop & go

other than that, i use the traditional GT control layout for my DS3

This is my exact setup now. I just switched from the gas/brake on the right stick and using manual about 2 weeks ago. I also just started turning off all the assists. Wow that was a tough transition but I am playing a totally different game now. I still down shift when I should up shift occasionally but I am getting much smoother laps now. I have also started trying the equivalent of left foot braking now which is interesting. I don't know what I am doing exactly but it somehow feels smoother.

I just got gold on the last kart race. It took me several tries but I got there. I found that I had to barely ease off the throttle at certain points in autumn ring to hold the line

Looks interesting this setup.... I've always used, X = speed, square = break, R1 and L1 for shifting.... I've been looking for a smoother throtlle control and have tried with the analog controls, but I could'nt figure out the up and down shift with this lineup.

With my current controls, I'm an in between driver, silver and golds, most silver though. So this setup might actually help me out, to gain more control of the speed.

Happy I found this thread :dopey:

I've always used a controller for racing games. Only recently did I pick up a wheel (cheap $30 Driving Force Wireless) and at first I just couldn't get used to it. I sucked so bad with the wheel I actually went back to the controller for a couple weeks after buying it. Went on complete most of A-Spec and Special/Seasonal events with it. But finally last week I forced myself to use the wheel again and I am proud to say I am now better with the wheel than the controller.

As far as I can tell there are two main reasons. First being the far more precise throttle and break control that the shoulder buttons of the DS3 could provide, and second the much higher precision that the wheel allows. Just finished golding all 3 sets of seasonal events as well as the B and A licences using it.

For people not wanting to invest in a DF GT because of the cost or space reasons I highly recommend the Driving Force Wireless, its cheap and just sits on your lap (I strap it to my legs using a belt, it does NOT move when you do that) and doesn't even come with peddles. It uses the paddle shifters as gas and break and it works great once you get used to it. It also works on the PS2 and PC which is an awesome bonus and a great way to experience gt 3 and 4 if you have yet to do so with a wheel.

Give it a try if you haven't, people aren't kidding that it adds an extra level of fun to the game if you take the time to get used to it.

Signing in SIR!, Been using controller for ages, my thumb is swollen thanks to racing game, been using default setting X and Square

Wheel strapped to legs and gas and brake on the wheel? This sounds like an awful setup. No, it is an awful setup. No disrespect lol.

Another controller racer here, been using it since gt1. X and square for brake and accelerator, might loose a few tenths but its still only a bit of fun.
Couldn't justify the cost of steering wheel and pedals when I have a real racing car in the garage!

I use the DS3 with the triggers and left stick. I don't know how you guys do it with x and square or the d pad. I can't get enough precision with the standard set up. I'm really struggling with the Vettel challenge though.

Wow a surprising amount of people using the default X and [] buttons. I did on the PS1 and PS2 but the new DS3 controller has good triggers to I use L2 for brake and and R2 for accelerator. Much better IMO.

Don't knock it till you try it. I am not claiming it is anywhere near as good as a high end wheel with a racing seat set up. But it is extremely quick to set up, takes up no space, allows me to sit on my comfy couch and cost me only the price of the wheel. That said, the paddle acceleration/braking actually works quite well, all while not having to deal with moving peddles with unreliable carpet grabbers or suction cups.

Im using triggers for brake/throttle and the right stick (up/down) to shift. This was one of the biggest things I was look forward from GT4.

I've been using a controller since GT2.

Steering: Left stick
Gas/Brake: Right stick
Shifting: Triggers

Is there a petition to sign in here? A petition to ban all wheels? None? Darn. Was so looking forward to this becoming a sticky.

I'm a dual stick user, with the right stick mapped to gas/brake, but lately, I've been getting the feeling that in this iteration of Gran Turismo, I may finally have to switch to L2/R2 gas/brake control, as there are some cars that could do with a good bit of left-foot braking.

In GT3 and GT4, I could gold everything with the dual sticks. In GT5, whether due to rust or the lack of left-foot braking, I'm struggling to gold, though I can silver everything.

The one thing that will suck is how badly I'll drive while adjusting to this new set-up.

I use the controller with the classic X to accelerate, Square for brakes setup. Never was able to constitute spending hundreds of dollars for a steering wheel for playing a video game. My lap times might be slower than someone who uses a G25 or G27, but I spent my $300+ on something I thought was a little more worthwhile.

slayer91, proud user of metallic blue and metallic silver DS3's.

no offence to those with a wheel and all that stuff but if my girl came home and saw me sitting in front of the TV with a wheel she would probably kick my a**. To be honest, I would probably kick my own a**, lol.
I'd be more concerned with the fact that she's out of the kitchen.

I have been using the controller for years. I use both but only get to use the wheel once in a blue moon. I use the joysticks as steering and throttle l/r1 buttons for gears and r2 as h/brake. This setup has served me well over the years, personally I think its the best setup for drifting to.

Have tried the xbox style setups with the triggers and throttle and brake, and also the defaults with x and square and didn't like either.

Also gold in all seasonal events with DS3 , although took 10 or so goes with the RX7 Tsukuba & mini challenges [but not Nascar on the ring 11th :ouch:]. Use 0 button for go ,rest standard .
Love the seasonal events & has restored my interest in GT5 .

I drive "Old School" face buttons and D-pad, just can't use the analogue sticks at all for racing, except for the Indy 500, everything else has been D-pad. I've golded everything except all the licences and 2 of the Bonus Race No. 2's, but i'm about to gold them tomorrow now that the restrictions have been lifted, not that i'm a fan of the no limit's, but I might aswell do them now since they'll be away before I get a wheel.

BTW - planning on getting a rig and wheel pretty shortly for the fun aspect.

The hardest challenge I have found so far in GT5 is the Alfa 8C Tour Special Event. I golded that with the DS3 (No assists except ABS-1 and MT). Some challenges take 2 or 3 goes, others take hours. I'm sure the Vettel Challenges can be done but I have yet to reach it yet.
I think my driving is better than my tuning as I should invest in the full suspension setup for the seasonal events. The Fiat 500 took me two goes after I added some downforce and suspension. Anyway. Can't wait to use a wheel but am happy with DS3 for now.

X and square since GT1.

Golded the S licence yesterday, got all golds and silvers on the other 5 but they just aren't as much fun as the 1-lap challenges of the S-Licence.

First set of seasonals all golded without SRF. 3rd set obviously very easy with unlimited tuning (although all you really need is decent tyres). 2nd set was very hard, had to cut corners on Cape Ring and Laguna Seca and use SRF on Madrid. Can only get 2nd on Tsukuba with SRF on. Can't do that Nascar one at all.

edit: just seen that the tuning restrictions have been lifted for the 2nd seasonals. I'll probably still mess the Nascar one up though!

i'm torn...i got frickin good at gt3 w/ a controller, but nothing in my mind compares to the feeling of a wheel w/ gt4,5, enthusia etc...harder, yes, but that made the manuevers i pulled off that much more rewarding when i got it right. i mean i've been doing backwards entry drifts on gt3 since 2002/2003, w/ no prob whatsover, and i still can't master it after 4-5yrs w/ a dfp or dfgt(and i'm still steadily trying. in no way would i hate on people using controllers, cause we all gotta start somewhere,(and god save us if real cars actually start getting installed w/ dualshock controllers:crazy:), but to those who use controllers merely because they can't justify spending money on a wheel, i ask: how much did you pay for ps3? how much did you pay for GT5? how much did you pay for the tv you're playin on? damn the gf and the spouses:scared:...go out and drop $50 on a used dfp(got my new dfgt for $72 on amazon) and live a little...you might come to like it.

I enjoy driving with the d-pad

My god, I'm not the only one :sly:
D-Pad user since GT1, survived Mission 34, played every racing game I've ever owned with those lovable little textured buttons. For wheel snobs, I loved doing NFS Hot Pursuit II with a $40 Mad Catz wheel. Yes, it was garish yellow with fake carbon fiber and everything. It was wonderful. But boy do I sure love my buttons.

Now, anyone drive face buttons with their right thumb on [X] and right pointer finger curled around and resting on [SQUARE]? I fear I'm carving myself my own little niche with every word :nervous:

I use a controller with face buttons and stick to steer. The buttons are actually pressure sensitive so you can "throttle" the cars with A LOT of practice. I'm starting to get pretty good at it but not perfect yet.

Have real triggers for my ds3 so I got L2/R2 for Braking/Accelerating. Have the right stick set to look left/right.

Don't have the $$ for a wheel yet, waiting for Christmas this year probably.

That seems like it would take a long time to get used to. I use triggers for braking and accelerating. I use X for shift up and [] for shift down. Thumb sits perfect in that situation. Not sure why you would need two fingers for X and [] as the thumb rests nicely to take care of both.
