Convince me to get an iRacing membership

I agree. IRacing seems like more of a tool that is being utilized by everyone from novice to professional. I'm using just to reduce my lap times on various tracks. But one could literaly learn the basics of racing and the more advanced from Iracing. I'm signing up for a year membership after Xmas.
 
After having a membership for 2 weeks now, I have got many impressions. Like mentioned earlier, this is not a game like GT5 where you can turn it on, run a race for 5 min than quit, iRacing takes much longer time than so. My experience with online racing is that other players have much better racecraft than any other game I have played. I like how people pass you in realistic places and don't just bump into you in the first corner. The game was also very easy to start up, didn't need to download many patches and manually install them.

So far I am enjoying the game, but I find it hard to invest so much time as work is very busy this time of the year. Will invest some serious hours of gameplay in the holidays.

Before I sign up for iRacing I was wondering about the connection speed threshold. I have 750k downstream and 250k up, I have problems w/ it on PSN so my curiosity is obvious.

I think as long as your ping isn't too bad it would be fine. Internet speed only matters to an extent, the details like ping and packet loss are what really matter. I have 30 MB/s down and 5 MB/s up and have problems on psn from time to time. Mainly only on gt5. I would say iRacing is whole different ballgame for online racing. My experience is that its a very stable service while trying to cater with all the different types of internets being used on it.

I'm no internet guru so maybe someone else could answer your question better, but I don't see why it wouldn't work decent. Even 56k dial-up is supposed to work.:lol: Sorry if anyone has dial up. Not trying to be an arse.

Just got started with iRacing myself a couple days ago now. Participated in my first full race tonight (first one resulted in some horrible framerates so I quit).

It takes some time to get to grips with things. Took me about a month to really understand how it all works. Glad you like it and keep at it man. Its an awesome service.👍 Just ask if you can't figure something out.

The iRacing GUI and layout is not the best. I am still discovering features of this fantastic service!
 
Another thing to remember are the deals iRacing has. Black Friday they put a 1 year sub for $49 instead of the usual $99 per year. Keep an eye out for these deals, also buy in three's, that is say you like iRacing and want to buy additional cars and tracks. Buy three and save 10%, buy six items and save 20%.
 
just had a bunch of amazing races with the Acura ARX-01c at Infineon with a decent grid (30+ cars). Was so much fun. Seriously guys this is the sim to get. It feels so good to see yourself improve. They give you all the tools to become a much better driver. eventually I want to have a GTP event to get the newbies settled in proper. Yall make sure to look me up I'll be happy to drive with you new guys. Just get a mic, etc. I normally drive HPD / Riley but wouldnt mind messing around in rookie road/oval cars

Yeah, the offers for current members are not so easy to find. I used the deal back in the summer for $79 for one-year. I wish I had held off for the $49 offer....oh well, I hope they offer something close to the $49 deal before summer 2013!

I am currently in my 3rd week and I'm simply loving this racing sim. I was finally promoted to Class D after getting to grips with the MX-5 at Okayama, where I fought to my first race win in the 5th race I attended. At the moment, I am messing around with the Pontiac, trying to learn the other tracks, so I can be competitive in the other race series. I want to try some other race series as well in the other classes, but I will need to purchase some tracks in that case, I am still thinking of dropping Skip Barber and wait until class C and compete in the Star Mazda cup.

I highly recommend other players that are in doubt, that I once were, get this sim. You will enjoy it.

You can still buy the deals even before your annual sub is up, it's called a top up I believe.

yeah, that is what I did with the $79 offer last summer, but I thought it was a bit excessive to top up with a 2-year extension to have a membership into 2014 since I do not know how long I will be around iRacing! imho,ymmv

ditto! For most of us the victories become much harder when you progress up the ladder as the competition gets tougher and more skilled.

I was lucky to get a win in the rook Mazda Cup that was pretty much gifted when the lead pilot with a enormous 15second lead crashed out - but, hey, a win is a win! With my (lack of) skill I highly doubt I will ever see a win in the higher classes, but I will keep trying my best.

I've been on iRacing for about 6 months. I have to say the #1 lesson learned is that no matter HOW BAD YOU DO... stay in the race. I am absolutely SHOCKED how many people just decide to quit the race and leave because they lost a couple positions or lost the lead, or damaged their car. I usually gain 2-3 positions just from the people dropping. LOL!!

Though I don't like how the experience points are calculated. It really doesn't make sense to me. I shouldn't be 'slapped' for having a wheel go off the track... in fact, I should be rewarded for keeping the car under control in a bad situation. I also have had to go off track to avoid major accidents, but I still lose points?!?!?! That's just crazy.
And finally... regardless of what day of the month it is, once I reach a certain amount of points, I should have my license promotion. (waiting 4 weeks until the next promotion date just doesn't make sense and it wastes my membership costs)

Finally... they need to fix the sound level/quality of the voices. (I don't know how someone types in chat AND still is able to drive???)

As for graphics... the only thing I wish they would add is showing rubber on the road surface and add some weather changes.

Nonetheless... 6 months of racing and I still haven't won a race (I've won my class a few times, but not the overall race)
 
Well thanks to this thread I too joined the ranks of iRacing. I've been searching for something more from GT5 and I think iRacing has what I'm looking for. Thanks again to all.
 
I'm excited about the upcoming team races. A 24hr race with 6 drivers taking shifts would be beyond awesome! Can't wait for the next update!

I remember reading or watching a video about a surface model for the tracks. I'm taking this as rubber build up and marbles/dust or whatever out of groove or offline. Something like this is probably quite a ways off as we still don't have the NTM on all the cars and it will probably go through more tweaking. Iracing is definitely capable of this, but they will want to make sure it works well before it would be released. Or I think they would. Remember initial mx-5 setup and tire model.:sly: It would definitely improve the oval racing alot by having multiple grooves to run and would punish anyone going offline. The oval racings not bad, but is really hard to run the high side and keep pace. I really hope somewhere down the road we'll see a surface model.👍

Weather would be another game changer. Haven't heard anything of weather really. With the laser scanned tracks it would be interesting as the puddles would form in the low bumps and dips around the track like in real life.
 
Here's the thing with weather. The way all official sessions count towards the the series championship, every race session needs to be consistent. I wouldn't think it to be fair for one person to have a race in the rain count towards his points and then I get a dry race. Its fair to everyone in that particular session, but the person racing in the rain may have got a better relative result than I would have in the dry.

So, run a whole week of racing in the rain? I'll pass. :lol:
 
But not every session does count towards. Depending how many races you do, they drop some and average the others together.

But an easy solution to the problem you are talking about it just to have every session that week be in the rain.
 
I really want to become a member of iRacing, but I have a couple of doubts about it:

If I become a member, and then for some reason I decide not to renew the membership, and some time later I decide to renew it, can it be done?

And I'm concerned that I won't enjoy it very much because I'm not a very fast driver and I may not be competitive. I heard that there is a system that matches fast people with fast people and slow people with slow people. Is it true?
