Convincing my dad to play

Get a steering wheel. That'll make him want to play it. He'll feel like a big man once he starts beating the AI.:dopey:

Keep it fun. It will take him a while to get used to using the DS2, so, until you get a wheel, take it easy on him.

A "game" that works well with beginners is "pin the tail on the donkey". Get him to chase you and try to touch your bumper. Your job is to keep just far enough ahead of him that he still has an incentive to try. He'll learn steering and other controls pretty quickly that way and have a laugh, too. Remind him that, later, bumping is a no-no.

Make sure he has his own mem-card. A second console has other possibilities...

Cheers,

MasterGT

Let me tell you something. Your dad obviously has the right idea, being a car nut. To me, that's the first step to appreciating GT4. The next few steps is getting out there and PLAYING GT4. Have him learn the ways from going from newbie to champion. Have him practice his moves and learn proper racing techniques. When he's done with the asphalt, you know how the saying goes. "Dirt is for racing, asphalt is for getting there." So once you're done with asphalt, hit the REAL dirt tracks = RALLY RACING!!! Let him learn how to slide around and look cool doing it. Afterwards, win races and cars and money. And when he's ready for a bigger challenge, let him have endurance racing. Then keep on going until perfection has been reached.

Yeah, it's a lot of work, but if you want to be the best at GT, do like us veterans of the series have done. With work, he'll PWN any jive turkey who think he/she can hang with pops. Dig?

Tell him you'll give him a fith of Jack Daniels if he completes the Beginner League. By then, he'll be hooked.

When GT4 comes out, just let him have some fun in the school mode, so he can learn to drive and get some practice. That always helps. Helped my friend in Indy Car Series, I let her do the masterclass, she went form spinning out to getting golds and silvers.

errrm
Sorry, but every reallife driver knows how to steer a car and every racing nut additional knows how to find the ideal racing line.
BUT: the only problem of parents is, to learn how to handle the controllers ;)
I know that from my dad, every time i practice with GT4p i feel him right behind me, gazing at the screen. but i know too, that he never would take the DS2 in hands, cause he would forget the buttons yet before he reached the first corner^^

i am a dad .......i am a gt addict just like the rest of you i have 2 kids , 1 is 5 ,1 is 7
my lad didnt get me into gt i got him into gt

:D

"hey dad, guess what. when you finish the game, naked ladies dance around on the screen. no lie!"

why didnt any of you kids let me in on this secret before, I would have completed all to 100% :D

My father in law used to race, grass circuit racing, and has no interest in video games, but he just couldnt resist having a go at GT4 prologue with the wheel, and loved it, he was frustrated at first, but once he setteled into it he started to set some good times.

The DFP adds a lot of interest and even my wife, loves having a go with it, she just wasnt interested before and didnt like playing it with a Dual shock even though she loves racing, she used to do go karting, (not the rubbish restricted indoor arena stuff), shes also done some privateer rallying.

The biggest problem non-gamers have, like most have said here, is using the DS/2 controllers. Talk him into buying a DFP for the two of you for some "quality bonding time":sly: No car nut can resist the DFP and first person view:)

Yeah my mum was never interested in GT1 until I got my (crappy) V3 wheel then occasionally she asked for a go (Probably when she got bored of watching me play ;) ). She liked using the aqua coloured Civic around high speed ring, she wasn't ever so good (she doesn't even drive in real life) but she enjoyed it!

I remember giving my sister a go at GT3, she was 16 or 17 at the time, shes now 18 and she was driving at 50kph and was driving like she would on the road. Apparently there was a baby in the back of the car and it dropped its bottle out the window at one stage.

I tried getting my dad into GT3 one day, about a month ago. He seemed to have some fun with it, but was getting a little frusterated, probably because of the controller, and rarely ever playing the game. Maybe i'll try some tips listed above, such as putting him through some of the license tests. When i first started GT3, that's how i learned to drive the best, was through the license tests. Now the AI rarely ever beats me, and i have trouble finding some competition.....hopefully GT4 will bring me some!

See, this is exactly what B-Spec mode was created for. It's a way for car nuts who aren't really gamers to get into the game without having to really be good at the racing part. B-Spec makes the game all about the cars rather than the racing, which is something your dad might appreciate.

The DFP will also be a great help to get him in to it. I had my DFP set up and let my non-gamer dad take a go at it in a slow-ish car, and he was all right. It was fixed to a relatively unstable TV tray though, and I imagine he would have done better with a better mount. His only real complaint with it was that the g-forces aren't there, so it was hard for him to judge things right.

Well my dad is a gamer too.

When I bought Gran Turismo 3, some odd years ago, he played the game with me. The best thing to do is get him to start off in Rally. Me and my dad have your weekly rally bouts between the Mitsubushi and the Subaru rally cars. It's darn fun, and he's good too. 👍

My dad plays GT as much as I do. When I am doing an endurance race and I get tired I let him continue untill the last five laps. He races really good and he also enjoys rally but the only problem is that he doesnt know how to buy the parts for the cars or which ones to buy so I have to do those for him. He sometimes makes my uncle play with him too. Its fun to challenge both of them. 👍

Haha how many times have u played that with ur dad . Has he touched ur bumper yet?

yeah. i talked my mom into play live forspeed and whats creepy is she got a decent lap time her first time playing. she kept complaining that the wheel didnt turn as much as a real cars, and about geforces though... she beat the AI on the quick setting. GT3 is easier and since it probably has a few cars he likes alot.

I always used to play tag, when I had a friend over, who couldn't drive. It does work.

YOU LUGHEAD!!! The naked ladies were meant to be a secret

my mom is good at gt3. the only problem she has is working the analog stick....because you have to feel for the compensation in turning time....and then there is understeer and oversteer which she doesnt understand. she thinks it will turn instantly like the atari style or whatever. lol.

I tried to get my dad to play GT2. Lets just say he started using explicits against the NSX...
The wierd thing is he keeps buying games, but never plays them.

My Dad had a go on the original....... The game that started it all......... GT. I made sure that he had an easy car to drive. I chose a Primera. Let's just say I couldn't pick up the controller for a while.

My dad did the same. He bought a few games for the PS1 and only played one of them. :dopey:

Hiya! :D :O  Meow! (='.'=)

The only way I can think of that will probably convince your dad to play GT4 is to have him watch you play. You should like...over exaggerate yourself to show that you are REALLY having fun! :O You should talk about it constantly during dinner! :O You should about it constantly whenever your dad is present. Eventually, the world "Gran Turismo"should get stuck in his head and he will give it a try. 👍

I once tried to get my dad into playing Gran Turismo 3 with me, but it wasn't successful...What I did was hook up my Playstation 2 on his Plasma TV and begin to play it while he watched. I said, "Dad, look how realistic this game is!" :O Then my dad said, "Yea sure my little Angel! 👍 Maybe you should be more productive by taking your Camaro Z28 out and drive it around instead of sitting in a simulated world." Blah... I tried.....But my dad doesnt mean to hurt my feelings. He is just playing around, but he did gave me a hint that he MIGHT try GT4 when it realesed since I talk about it with my mom. Now my mom is trying to convince my dad that he should play a bit of GT4 with me IF GT4 releases before Christmas! A good way to spend Christmas with me! :O

Hello...this is my first post on GTP...ive been a "guest" here since GT3 took over my life a while back...since then ive become a huge motorhead...thanx in part to some of you on this forum lol....anyway to get back to the topic at hand, i tried to get my dad to play....man was it a bad idea...its like watching someone play Pong except with a car...it was a terribly disheartening experience...i even tried the "Hey, if you make it through 1 lap, you get a BEER!!!" trick but that didn't work too well...oh well, as they say, you can't teach an old dog new tricks. By the end of the lap, i think my dad made up his mind never to touch a videogame again. I wish my dad was like McLaren's Angel's dad...now wouldnt that be fun...some quality father-son or daughter time without ever having to move from the comfort and security of your couch! Ok enough of my longwindedness...hehehe...bye bye!

I am the dad, in this case, and this game works well. It also teaches the leader how to steer while looking in the mirror.
