Customizing my Playseat

Well I have ordered a CSR wheel and CSR Elite pedals, and in preparation for their delivery and the release of Forza 4 I have decided to do a little customization of my Playseat. Nothing major. Just some paint and vinyl maybe. Sorry, nothing really exciting. I am on a budget!

But, maybe I can get you interested in doing something similar to yours!

I would also like the opinions of members. Give me your feedback!

These are modifications done to the A1GP Playseat

Did a scratch test comparing a sanded, primed, and painted piece vs. a primed and painted piece only. Honestly, there was little to no difference. So rather than spend hours of my time sanding I decided to forgo the prior and simply prime and paint (2 coats each). Sorry, I forgot to take pictures of this.

I wiped off any dirt and vinyl residue with 91% ispopropyl alcohol and a rag (didn't have any acetone available, but it gets the job done).

I purchased Rustoleum primer and flat black paint from Home Depot. I believe they were about $6 dollars each. They had cheaper comparable items but the employees suggested these because they were specifically for metals and they had a quick dry / recoat time. The cans are taller than your average spray paint can so they hold a considerable amount more. I ended up using 2 cans of primer and 2 cans of paint.

I applied 2 coats of primer to each piece allowing for about 1 hour of drying time in between. I allowed for 12 hours of drying prior to applying the first coat of black and an additional hour thereafter for the top coat.

(Paint is still a little wet in photos).

Cut out and tested Forza and GT logo stencils (with my instrument of choice...) which will be used for later painting and carbon fiber vinyl cut-outs.

Laid painter's tape for a glossy apple red racing line down the center of all main frame pieces. Currently applying 3-4 coats (should have done 1 primer coat on top of the black before starting the stripe; where is Captain Hindsight when you need him).

Time to start covering stuff in carbon fiber :)

It's a wrap! Well... Almost lol.

3M Di-noc carbon fiber vinyl. Ordered 8 sq. ft; still have about 3-4 sq. ft.

I was going to go with painted apple red Forza and GT logos on the base of the wheel stand / frame connection. But due to potential wearing from my feet going back and forth across the cross section and the poor quality of my stencils I have decided to go with this:

Hand cut; took about an hour. These will be surrounded by diagonal strips of the same vinyl to help protect the paint in said area.

I will also be applying various vinyl stickers to the frame and on top of the carbon fiber vinyl to give the seat a more "racey" look while still trying to maintain a minimal appearance.

To ward off against scraping paint during re-assembly I added rug stoppers (practically just thick foam tape) to key areas pictured below.

Unfortunately the pictures do not really do it justice :(

Oh well, more to come soon!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I would also like to give my soon to be delivered CSR the "Elite" look by applying the same vinyl to the face of the wheel.

For those of you not familiar with the wheels:

Lol. Yes they're real. Texas has great firearms provisions.

Cool, is the Carbon Fiber shiny? The dark one looks cool

It's not glossy or anything. But it is made in several layers; it's not just a flat image. I've seen it with a couple coats of clear coat but it is just too shiny for me.

I like graphite or black the most. Looks cool.

Thanks. Ya I think I am going to go with the black and then do some red pinstripe work in various areas like down the middle of the frame.

awesome ar15....I shoot in military comps using a custom match 15...

on topic... I have a playseat also and am always looking for mods. my latest quest is an inverted CSP on a playseat. Hope you get as much enjoyment out of it as I have!

Nice. I recently got out of the Marines, Scout Sniper, but unfortunately I have not acquired many guns and just have the 12 gauge (which I plan on adding a forend and pistol grip to) the AR, and a XDM .40 ; I wish I had more guns but unfortunately they are rather expensive. I am looking at purchasing an ACR within the next year. I would love to have a civilian rifle similar to the M107 50 SASR, but those are about 5 grand with a decent scope lol I am on a poor boys budget.

Let me know how the inversion goes. I know that the CSR Elites will have an inversion kit available soon and Playseat just recently introduced an inversion kit for their Evolution series rigs. I don't know which way I will go or if I will even end up doing it. I will know once I get my pedals mounted on the frame.

Very clean! Now how did an Apple sticker find it's way onto the rig? Couldn't find your Sony stickers?

No, just threw whatever stickers I had on it. I think in order to put up a Sony sticker you have to of let them hand out your credit card information at least twice lol.

But, the chair is going to look completely different when I am done. I can't wait!

I have the exact same playseat (only seat is black) and have been wanting to do the same colour modification, but I think that from the moment you put this thing together again you scrape off the paint from the usual places.

Well, I thought of that. I will post up pictures of my "fix" to this problem when I start putting it back together.

Thanks guys!

Just wrapped up with the carbon fiber vinyl (no pun intended). Still have plenty left over to do other things I possibly have not thought of yet lol.

What about using the carbon fiber on the top of the base of the wheel?

I might. I don't want to over due it too much with the vinyl though.

So clean!!

I'm liking the CBR bike fairings on the wall

Oh ya! I miss my bike :'(

Nice work with the vinyl does it have that 3d look of real carbon fiber or is that just an illusion of the picture.

It has the 3D look. I believe it is manufactured in several layers because it is decently thick. But it is still easy enough to work with; covering the base was a breeze and I was even able to cut some decent looking logos (see pics above). It is very nice stuff, unfortunately my iPhone pictures can't do it justice. When all is said an done I will steal the wife's camera.
