My race report for last week at Monza Arena.

A rough but extremely fun week. One happy side effect of the current penalty system is that everyone is scattered across the DR and SR ranges, no two races are alike. New people every race while going up and down. Yep 3 (at least) DR resets last week.

Sunday at 8pm (when the results get stored EST time) I was down to 5 SR and reset to 7K again. A marathon run Sunday evening brought me back to 99 SR, all on Monza without qualifying and nearly tripled my DR as well.

Which way SR goes mostly depends on the time of day. Late evening / night is much cleaner, the more kids are in bed the better. Afternoons are the worst and since the results get stored at 8pm EST... The two days during the week with SR.S up there is from racing in the morning and not picking it up again until after 8pm. Afternoon racing is taking the expresSR elevator down.

I also did some DT Seaside races yet there the outcome is pretty much always red SR from the back. One tiny bump, either a car in front stalls or crashes or a car behind runs into you, negative SR for the race. The track flows really well, best original track imo, however I found myself constantly praying for the car in front of me to make it through the bus stop. So many races ruined there without ever crashing there myself :crazy: (ok once I botched it luckily with no one around. Alone on track, I lose focus lol)

Observations at Monza were basically the same as on the Nord. Real racing happens below SR.S :/ It seems people are getting more and more scared to race in SR.S. Every time I got back to SR.S, first thing to notice is the huge skill gap from front to back. Anyone closely matched eventually gets thrown out of SR.S. Then when you race, people are far quicker to concede, not willing to defend or compete for the corner, moving out of the way slowing down in fear of SR loss I guess. Of course there are still some that want to race and those seem to expect that you are part of the people that simply move out of the way.... Hence I never stayed long in SR.S :lol:

I had the best race in high SR.B close to SR.A. I had an awesome race with a Brazilian, all clean, respecting each others lines, feigning moves, out manoevering each other. We swapped positions at least 5 times in 3 laps with many more over take attempts aborted to set up a better / safer pass. Amazing race which I of course forgot to save after all the congratulating while enjoying the adrenaline rush. However since he was from Brazil there was still some lag involved which resulted in SR Downs here and there. I never felt contact, his car never seemed to register any contact, and he was just as happy about the race afterwards. The penalty system did not approve and send us both to SR.C. Well done PD.

Moving up and down the SR and DR ladder had some other perks as well :)

One is from the FIA race at Tokyo in SR.D. Quick boost for SR, great track, shame it doesn't have a rain version yet.
I managed many more fastest laps, but only a handful clean race bonuses. Racing is tight and fast below SR.S.

Monza stats, which I like to compare to Sarthe. Pretty similar tracks, I wish we would get GR.1 again at Monza :)

Or bring the epic N800 race back to Monza on sports tires without chicane, put some strategy into Curva Grande.

I quite like Suzuka and across all the games I've played it's one of my most successful tracks so I guess it suits my driving style well, so for the hell of it I decided to try the Corvette C7 yesterday after watching one of TheKie's videos and my god that thing sticks to the road like crazy.

Getting the nose around slow corners is a bit of a chore but medium and fast corners are like driving on rails, just point it and go go go. Even if you push it too hard and the rear steps out a bit there's never a problem balancing it with countersteer and throttle.

I think I found my new favourite car

Crushed my previous laptime by a second and that's despite moving from bumper cam to cockpit cam. P2 and FL on the one race I had time for yesterday.
 
Thanks to Tidgney's track guide I thought I would give the Mclaren a go, not got the braking points nailed yet, I seem to overshoot on 2 of them, no idea why but bested my 911 lap time by lap 3, TCS is on 2 bb on 0 and think I have found a car I am comfortable with bit more practice needed before jumping into a race but not to much more.
 
I’m really struggling with Suzuka, becoming close friend of several sandy corners :crazy: . Hope to improve during the week, still is fun to learn from mistakes and realize I have to work way more on consistency. Qualy is ok but during race doing mistakes or not paying attention to braking points.

**** Suzuka... Really, what crap is this track.... Think about it.... Why have a run off area that is essentially unusable?

T1 run off area: lots of space but mostly sand =end of race. Even if you avoid the sand you can't reenter the track without spinning out = end of race.

T9 run off area: lots of space but almost all sand.. Why!!!?!

T10 run off: Slippery + wall. Partially useful but treacherous to use so not reliable during race conditions.

T13 run off area: useful, but reentry is slippery/dangerous.

T15 run off area: excellent, but can reenter without position loss or penalty. Should have track penalty.

Final chicane: Pft. Super slippery and any mistake usually results in total spin, sand or wall = back of pack.

It's just not enjoyable.

I understand it's a real world track, but I see no reason why they couldn't replace the sand traps with hard surface in the game (and why not in the real world too, with a final slimmer strip of sand for safety).

A hard run off area with penalties would allow for mistakes but keep you in the race, take Interlagos for example. T1, 3, 4 & 8 all with useful run off areas. Spa T1, 4, 7, 10, 12 & 18 and the final chicane all with useful run off areas. Even Nurburg GP T1, 2, 4 & 10 with useful run off areas (although many without = death)

All I'm saying is, dedicated race tracks should be made with these things in mind, and if they're not, there's no reason why the game couldn't add/improve the features to make the experience more enjoyable. In fact by observing the game play, track owners should consider making enhancements to the real world track to improve real world racing. There's a concept... test upgrades by simulation, then implement the ones that work :-0

Another feature I like, in places where a sand trap is definitely required, or large grassy area, is the thin strip of tarmac around the outside (next to the wall). If you do mess up and hit the wall, and lucky enough to avoid car damage, you can follow the hard strip back to the track and reenter. Yes, you lose several positions (deservedly so), but can continue racing.

Bumper view, I have found it the easiest view for me, the only problem with it is you see less of the track ahead so track knowledge is very important.



I'll give it a go, I tend to lift off the accelerator for a split second at what feels the right point and make it most of the time, probably about 95-98% success rate :cheers:
Just started practicing with the viper and surprised how stable it is I normally have big problems with fr and Mr cars.

I recently discovered the delights of the GP3 Vantage. A mate raced one at Monza, and it looked ultra stable, and quick in a straight line, so I thought I'd give it a go there (Monza).

Will be my first choice at Suzuka.

It's usually quite good, but cars respond differently on each track, due to their strengths/weakness (traction, power, suspension). No one car is good, AND fast, on all tracks.
 
Had my first race for a few weeks last night, had been playing Iron Man VR for a while, and we also got a dog, so the wheel has been away for a bit. Went straight for race C, which was probably jumping back in at the deep end, glad I ran some laps first, was all over the place to start with!!

Didn't set a time on those laps, so started 18th in the Toyota, no major incidents, dodged a very early braker at T1 on about lap 3, and had a good battle with another driver for about a lap and half, got a better exit at the last corner and past into T1. Ended up finishing P12 with a CRB, dropped a bit of DR, but holding onto 99SR.

You would really hate street circuits like Monaco.

The only problem with Suzuka is that the green strips on the exits (not the astroturf) have no grip, they should behave like the asphalt on the actual track.
 
I found the Peugeot 208 GTi quite good. at Alsace Village

I found the F type Jag really good at Monza, it seems to ride the Curbs really well.

The Jag was a favourite of mine early in my GTS story. It still is like a comfort blanket. I find it similar in a lot of areas to the Vantage. They look alike, too!

Like Big Willow, very unforgiving if you're untidy or punted. Like the man said: "Just stay on track", lol.

Three quick races. First two, no qualy. Last race, set a 2:01.xxx. Started 3rd.

Stayed behind an FT-1 and moved up the field. Players going off about two per lap.

Behind the FT-1 again. We caught a battle pack and we're trying to stay back, but one of the cars went off before the back straight and entered at full speed. That shook us up and things got hectic from there.

FT-1 got alongside another car down the front straight. Cleanly. Gave room into T1 and the car on its left still went off. End of the lap into 130R, it was synchronised running wide. Four of us with crazy slide action. I got a penalty.

By the time we got to the underpass, the FT-1 went wide and I slowed, but decided to pass. I serve a 4 second penalty. Dropped five spots to my finish position.

Last race proved again, the RSR has that corner exit speed. I had some opportunities to pass, but RSR didn't block and at one point, was opening the door down the front straight, but I flashed to keep going. We were losing time to the leader.

Last lap, the leader goes off before the back straight. Finished that close.
All race, the gap to the RSR was from .1-.5. Just wanted to recover from the red S I had previous race.

Run off areas are always going to be slippery. That's realistic. The track is "rubbered in" and provides significantly more grip than a rarely touched run off area. It is absolutely possible to use the T1 run off area and rejoin without spinning. This is actually something I see people make the mistake of doing, and you just need to know what to do. As soon as you're going off you need to keep the front wheels straight and brake in a straight line to slow the car right down. Then point the car back at the track and ease yourself back on, again without any steering inputs.

A lot of people use way too much steering and/or expect to be able to floor the throttle without consequence on a slippery surface. Take some care, and you can rejoin losing a few seconds rather than 10s of seconds caused by a spin.

The run off areas are fine, you just need to learn how to use them when things go wrong.
 
Suzuka is one of my better tracks, and generally a track where I do well. For the last 2 weeks I have switched to Manual Transmission (using the DS4), and I am now able to get better Q times, as well as more control on the car, and better corner entry and exit speed.

I tried the GTR in Suzuka yesterday, and I found it horrible to drive and stop in time. Later I tried the Lambo, but it is very tail happy and has massive oversteer and off throttle turn-in. With practice, it could be a good choice in Suzuka.

I ran 2 races with the trusted Beetle and finished 4th in one of them. Starting from 12th.

Have been very curious about the Mustang Gr3, so will probably give it a go today.

I find the F Type Jaguar is a pretty under-rated car for Suzuka. It's got some grunt and is pretty stable and enjoyable to drive. It's great at the start too and tends to catch the car in front by the end of the first straight too.
 
I’m back after 2 months off GTS (due to no wheel)... and the penalty system is still a shocker! SR-A to C in a few races, mostly being tapped from behind.

The only Sport race I did earlier (with DS4) was the SSRX draft fest with no penalties, it was awesome!

Hope GT7 improves the penalties substantially...

I might try ACC in the mean time :(
 
Nah I can't do anything this week. I plain suck at suzuka and the Group 1 cars I have always found so unpredictable. I never seem to get the same response from them, one lap the car will understeer, next corner it turns in too sharply, must be all the aero getting above and below it's tipping point.

Not to mentiuon Group C is a toyota meta race, basically pointless trying anythign else as it is so fast on the straights.

Well, that's the week Flight Simulator launches.

BMB A is a fun track, N200 though...
GR.4 is too slow for Spa imo, 3 laps too short.
Turnopolis another slow race.

Slow week, I'll be flying!

Well, fuel and tyre multipliers are identical to the previous N200 Autopolis race which was with the Toyota 86 GT Limited. I'll go with that under the assumption it's a copy.

Besides Gr.4 Spa, kind of a boring week. Bring back true daily races.

At least for one week.
