Hey everyone! new to the forums and was just wondering if anyone was looking foward to the Dakar next year, looks great like always and wanted to know your opinions about it...

Hoping a Chilean can win this time :D

I was a huge Dakar fan, back when it was still in Africa.
The Dakar is dead to me and I think it shouldn't have that name anymore.

I miss the old days.

Well i've only gotten interested in it just recently so im not sure how it was back then but i guess it would make sense to change the name

I'm pulling for Robby just to prove it but some how I don't think this will ever be his race. It is funny to see Nassar go from 4wd to 2wd after complaining about the Hummer's.

Yeah because it's a race not a contest to see who can throw the biggest tantrum.

I'd like to see Nani Roma win in the Mini and Spinelli make it to the end since he is in a Mitsubishi.

I have a feeling this will be a better rally for Robby based on more dunes. Peterhansel (or whatever his name is) just seemed to complain alot last year when he would get beat or not be at his best. The whole issue with Robby was BS but didn't want to get best like Robby was doing even helping his teammate who wasn't much of one. I'm curious to see who runs in 2nd Hummer or if it will since no word has been announced.

I'm curious to see how the buggies for Nassar actually hold up considering they aren't nearly as stout as the Hummer nor the R&D either.

I'm not sure what they could change the name too but it would be a little odd.

The Dakar is in South America, was since the cancellation due to terrorist threats back in 2007 (?)

I have no idea why, but that looks bad ass. I want one.

this:tup:

I hope i get to see much of the dakar this year, the two years past i watched parts of it on versus and it seemed very cool. I want to make sure i can see majority of it on tv and anything on youtube

I lost a fair bit of interest when it was moved to South America but I hope to follow it closely this year.

Just seen that Marc Coma has had to withdraw through injury, this pretty much kills the motorcycle contest before it begins unless Despres runs into trouble.

Does anyone know where to watch the Dakar in the U.S.? Google was not very helpful. I'm hoping there is a live feed somewhere.

Don't expect too much in the way of coverage, all that you are likely to get live are split times and text commentary which reports the major events.

A quick google says NBC are showing 30 minute recap shows each night, presumably similar to what Eurosport do, if not http://www.youtube.com/dakar upload very short videos of each day.

Also bear in mind that it's the toughest race in the world so sometimes the TV schedule runs late if it's been a particularly tough stage and half the field are still stuck in the dunes.

I don't think anyone in world unless your actually there has live coverage. It's a hard race to have live coverage on and hopefully can did the days recap.

On side note, I finally bought a Gordon Us vs Them sticker!

I know why they moved the Dakar, but have they thought to mave it back? While I have paid attention to it some, I didn't get to see any proper Paris-Dakar rallies. From what I heard, It was so brutal it made the Baja look like a walk in the park.

I usually love following the Dakar but havn't had the opportunity much in recent years.

Will make an effort to watch it more this year 👍

This year will be the first time in properly following the Dakar, never had the chance before. I'll be supporting the brave boys at Race2Recovery. 👍

dakar.com is reporting Robby Gordon has stopped 4km into the first stage and hasn't moved for over 5 minutes.

Of the actual contenders in the car class the buggies are looking good, the Red Bull's of Sainz and Al-Attiyah are at the top and Chicherit and Chabot's SMG's are close too but it's only a very short 13km stage so the gaps are mostly under a minute.

Cost Gordon around 10 minutes on the road which became half an hour when the times were altered.

Standings for all classes here: http://www.dakar.com/dakar/2013/us/stage-1/rankings/overall-cars.html

He has some ground to make up but he can do it! I think now he will have to take some risk though.

He can't win it by taking risks, his car is very fragile as shown by the transmission breaking yesterday when he selected reverse, he needs to play the long game to get back into contention, the Red Bull buggies might fall into trouble before the end given the reports of unreliability in testing and half an hour isn't too much even on the bulletproof Hilux's and Mini's unless he loses an hour or two by crashing which he has proven to do on a regular basis.

Stage 2 is live now on http://gaps.dakar.com/2013/dakar/stage-02/aso/ukie.php Francisco Lopez is on the link section on his way to a 242km special stage made up almost entirely of dunes.

C'mon Team X-Raid! Let's get those Mini's to the front!

Cars are now in the stage. Both Sainz and Al-Attiyah have got a couple of minutes over the Mini's.. with Peterhansel being 4th and 2:43 down at this stage (WP2)

Sainz dropped 22 mins between WP2 and 3, leaving Peterhansel in the lead.. (early but tentative 'whoop')

Al-Attiyah also struggled in that section. Possibly the buggys struggle through the sandier sections?

Looking at the Dakar live commentary there's a tough section in the middle of the stage which Sainz tried avoiding which cost him some time, Chicherit has lost a lot of time too, since this stage has a lot of dunes in I'd expect Gordon to make some time back in the RWD Hummer but he is losing more to the favourites.

The Dakar live timing is pretty tedious, it can't seem to make up it's mind what it's doing.

If you go on the overall times for each checkpoint it tells you about 30 more cars have gone through than the other option! I suppose it's better than nothing though.

For cars I've got standings at WP4, but no stage times... then it just switches to the trucks when it refreshes!

It is better than nothing you're right, but GPS based map would be even better, and maybe so onboard webcams... :)
