Damage and flipping

Am I the only one who thought the physics in that video were awful? The car was bouncing around as if it was made of rubber. That's not the style of damage I would want for GT5 if it were to come. I'd prefer a more laid back style, that accurately calculates the weight behind the car and really deforms based on that, not necessarily the angle and speed at which it crashes.

Awful? The crash physics are the right way, but with somewhat overdone bounce-off. And what name give you to GT5 Prologue's system with no flip, no crash, just ridiculously clumsy rubbing?

I'm having a funny feeling the damage system will be quite screwed in GT5. Some cars will have damage and some will not, some cars will flip and some will not.

doubtful. you know kaz. if he cant do something the way he wants it done he scraps it all together usually.

I've posted a very detailed account in a separate thread about how damage is modeled in another driving game. In that game, there is a Pontiac Solstice that has very detailed damage modeling and it can flip over, as shown in the video. So GM allows it, and there is a Ford car that will be in an upcoming update.

Maybe it's just the GOOD cars manufacturers that disallow it! :sly: (just a joke)

Won't surprise me if it takes PD a looonnnnngggg time to be satisfied with their damage modeling for all of their cars. It will be great if they get it right. And I love the idea of cars retaining damage sustained while driving and having to pay for it!!!

I love it, especially at 1:06, how the car front end magically goes through the barrier. But seriously, I would hate to see GT going the same route as iRacing- introducing collision physics but without damage because personally I find that the video to be funny rather than terrifying (which is what it should be).
Perhaps the best solution for now is to allow damage where it is allowed and where there's a problem with the manufacturer, is to introduce some kind of collision physics (allowed by the maker).

wow... its getting so serious now, not matter what PD does in GT5, we will be having plenty of fun right? like all games suppose to be

i know we all enjoy the realism of series, but how far should we go? flipping is fun, pay for repair, maybe, how about cant use the car for few days while it is in the workshop?

irl pro mechanics will have your car ready in MAXIMUM 1 day even if the damage is huge, watch some 24 hour races or wrc.

Eye-candy damage, take it or leave it. Realistic mechanical damage, I'm all for it. Tire wear, brake wear, overheating, bent up suspension, broken gears etc.. Taking care of your equipment is a part of racing, especially in endurance races.

Totally agreed. Bended hoods and how many ways bumper fall off are just so overglorified in driving games but in sims too. It's just visual gimmick after all and in no way affects how you drive.

Tyre wear is self-evident though, it's not really related to damage but mechanical damage is lacking even in PC sims that are often regarded so hardcore. One game has brake fade and heating, one game has clutch overheating, couple of games have nicely done suspension damage (including iRacing) and some games have very simplistic engine damage but altogether it's way too little.

Richard Burns Rally is only one that has somehow complete mechanical damage including engine, transmission and whatnot and it still leaves a lot to be improved as engine and gearbox can still take too much abusing.

Very hard to see GT5 as the one game that takes (mechanical) damage to the next level though, since the lack of development in the area so far...

As I've said a few times before, I would love to have all the mechanical faults you can get, especially engine failures. Then we would see who is fastest in a 24 hour race :trouble:
I can't imagine how crushing it would be to have an engine blow up 1 hour before the end of a 24 hour race though.

I hope he won't scrap it. But he did mention he might only have damage for race cars only.. But if it wont turn out to be realistic damage. Then it's good he will scrap idea of damage, and wait for power of PS4.

Either way damage or not. I am happy with new physics engine and how everything works. Just make good day and night cycle and realistic weather system.

Imagine doing a 24 hour race, time scale is set 1 : 1 perfect day and night, clear skies.. morning takes the sun to wake up really slowly, you are 18 hours in the race everyone is tired.. You don't even realize the sun is up untill 8am! ahhh heaven! well damange would be great too, you feel the car is sliding to the right, in cockpit more and more things are rattling. Tires are getting wore off, steering is off, ABS broke completelly so you worry about lock ups.. just few more laps till the pit lane.

Agreed that the car bounces too much when upside down. Aside from that, after playing iRacing for a few weeks now, I think the damage physics and general driving physics are excellent. They seem to be modeling so much more to get their results and you can 'feel' it while driving. Makes a big difference...

I've posted several times about iRacing here, and I really hope that PD is paying attention to other software and can take the stuff done well there and implement some of it with GT5P/GT5.

Dirt has pretty good damage and you can damage your engine, trans, turbo, suspension, body, driveshaft, cooling system, and some other things.

I know Ford has said previously that they wont allow any of their road cars (racing cars excluded) roll over in a game, they do acknowledge that their cars can roll (like all others) but don't want their cars appear that way in a game.

It would take some crazy arm twisting on PD/Sony behalf to road cars roll over.

What, are they still worried about the Explorer/Firestone fiasco?

Don't worry Ford, there won't be any Explorers in GT5p. If there is any SUVs in GT5p god help us...

Is there a troll living under their road cars or something?

Rubber Trolls? :dopey:

I don't think that's all so true anymore. I reckon Kaz wouldn't have been all too happy with us only being able to drive certain cars in free run in GT4.

If this happens, I'm actually going to sync up the 24hr races I do with my local time, so if it's 12 in the game, I'm gonna start at 12 and play completely through the 24 hours.

Sure DIRT has good damage, but you need to slam 5 times into a wall each 100MPH to have an effect.

i dont want damage, i dnt want an incomplete game with only certain cars having damage.. but why have the manufactures allowed damage in some games but not gran turismo? why?!?!?!?!?!!!?!?!??!?!?! i know it might give their cars a bad rep but look, ther cars might handle like crap anyways... :grumpy:
