Damage: Will it be realistic

So far, barely any games have a realistic damage system. Meaning, when the car goes 150 MPH and crashes on the wall, only the bumper comes off.
Since PD worked on Gran Turismo 5 for long time and kept delaying the release date, will they be able to make the players happy?

Will the damage be like this?

OR THIS?!?!?!?!?

Edit: People, I am a fan of Forza Motorsport 3. Stop complaining.
ALSO quit fighting because I didn't create this topic so we can fight. Come on we all love Gran Turismo 5 (:

Forget the second option, the manufacturers dont want to watch his cars destroyed on a game. That`s why videogames has not extreme-damage.

The damage has been discussed to death, there are already several threads about this.
To answer your questions, PD already said production car will not have realistic damage (car maker restriction), race car will have more damage but they haven't show us zit recently (the only thing we got now is the Subaru rally car with door flapping and bumper coming off).

I wonder if that day will ever come :( probably not.

The cosmetic damage will be like the first video for road cars, just like Turn10 they are bound by the manufacturer agreements not to destroy their cars. Racing cars on the other hand... Might be good.

Mechanical damage will make your car undrivable after a crash like that though. Depending on to what extent PD go with it.

Have we actually heard PD say that manufacturer request is the reason for such limited damage on production cars?

We did at some point, I think it was the same article/interview that stated there was only going to be ~180 cars with full damage.

Yes, a few times albeit most of them as passive comments. When it comes to road cars, manufacturers generally don't allow major body components falling off ie the doors, and under no circumstances wll they allow any damage in the cabin of the car or for any damage to reach or extend beyond the cars sub frame. Until recently (and maybe even now) you had to negotiate extremely hard to try and get the manufacturers to allow thier cars to roll over. Some manufacturers were more relxed than others but a lot wouldn't allow it. I remember reading a comment made by some guy at Ford about the way they allow tiher cars to be represented in games, it was pretty interesting although I already knew or had correctly assumed most of it anyway.

Okay, I'm seriously getting tired of GT fantards trashing Forza.

Honestly, do you guys have anything else to do besides trash a game that has nothing to do with your fetish obsession?

Or are you really that pathetic?

As for my POV, I like both, so there.

Why? From what we have seen of the damage model, to road cars at least in GT, it's not much better. You can't say the damage model in FM3 is brilliant. However, that doesn't make it a bad game.

The OP raises a valid question, will the damage live up to what we have been hearing, or was that secret press conference showing off the damage in late 2009 a hoax?

Well, I was refering to the GT fans who automatically hate Forza just because it challenges their precious GT.

Yeah, and GT5's road car damage does suck, but hey....

all i care about is being able to turn damage off.

And why?

Damage would not only make GT more realistic and more fun. (due to increased challenge)

Or are you one of those guys who just sucks, so you wouldn't finish a race with it on?

why you trying to be insulting ? i don't think damage will make the game more realistic because as in gt4 the damage engine will no doubt be poorly executed like tyre damage in gt4, you want realism then pd should make the car's performance relative to real life not have a ford gt that is quicker than everything else with the same pp but in real life it's actually not that good of a car.but i bet thats the car you use to gain an advantage to cover you'r poor driving tallent ! and no i'm not someone who suck's and yes i would finish a race with it on but would like an option to have it turned off.

Um.....In GT4 I owned a Ford GT and it sucked. Couldn't keep the damn thing straight.

And I don't even own one in GT5P....

/arguement fail

1 - Ford GT is the most awesome car in existence. This is not an opinion it's an empirical fact, proven by scientists, using the most advanced mathematical models known to man.

2 - I'm not going to bother explaining why you'll turn off damage, I've done it way too many times already. What I'll do is take a note of your username and as soon as the game comes out and you come on here bitching and whining about how damage has totally ruined the game for you, I'll post a gloating - told you so - response.

What the hell are you talking about? I've always wanted damage in GT, you god-damn idiot.

I mean....what......what the hell made you come up with an asinine assumption like that?

Now you're the one trolling.

I believe you've always wanted damage in GT. What I'm telling you is you won't like it when you try it.

And I'm not trolling you. That'd be like kicking a puppy.

I will like when I try it.

What the hell makes you think I wouldn't?

Seriously, now you're just making no sense.

You're the one that's attacking people for not wanting damage. And calling people names doesn't help prove your point.

I wasn't attacking the guy, I was just questioning his statement.

Then Pentagram comes in and starts making asinine and completely biased and untrue statements about me...So Yeah.

First you called me a "god-damn idiot" hyphenated it and everything. Then you attacked my assumption, which I worked long and hard at, by calling it "asinine". That hurt my assumptions feelings, let me tell you. Next you're accusing me of trolling. At which point in the post did the - not attacking - part come in, I think I missed it?

don't believe you don't have one in gt5 but fair enough

oooooohhhhh i'm in someone elses little red book now ! why not ad me as a friend and then on release we'll test out the damage when i slam you into the wall .oh yeah by the way here are my other usernames ad those to the list aswell
fake boobees :sly:

Dude, I really don't. My most powerful car on there is the Corvette, besides that, all I have is The F430, Both Lancers, the Integra, the Beat and Cappacino, and the GTR.... I'm not lying, dude.

the tuned cappucino is great for drifting 👍
the fordgt is similar to the one in gt4 as it overstears badly under braking, i hate it how it does that, plus it has an unfair advantage especially online when compared to other car's in the same pp catagory. it realy annoys me how people think damage will make the game much better when just changing thecar's performance values to ones closer to reality would be a bigger improvement i don't care about damage on or off but have you ever thought what if it is realy poor and can't be turned off ? then it will spoil the game for sure ! the old "pd won't let it be poor"or "kaz is a perfectionist" arguments don't rub with me because no one has seen it in action or played with it
"he was referring to me"
oh ok, sorry pentagram

Yeah, I hate that oversteer when braking.

I think that's why I don't like it very much.

But the 1969 one is probably worse

Topic starter: What kind of damage?

Even I know that there have been countless threads about this. I think the annoying thing for some people about people's motivation for visual damage is there is no solid foundation to it; you can't get a few months of great racing out of damage - it's just an effect that is a nice feature in some games, but that's all.

Whether or not cars can get visually damaged, I don't give a crap about. What I do care about (which probably won't feature for the big manufacturers) is mechanical damage, because it can be applied in a way to relate to driver skill. I think it would be great if a simulation career mode had mechanical damage which carried over, requiring repair time and cost. This would mean people having to drive with skill in a new way.

Furthermore, if there were to be mechanical damage, it should be incurred realistically. Everyone complains about some things not being realistic enough. In that case, a slight glance off a barrier should be enough to brake the suspension or cause other damage.

Ky said that it's possible to have the damage that sensitive, but you can tone it down.

Because visual damage looks awesome; nothing like seeing a wipe-out in front of you, with parts flying everywhere!:D
