Hi iracing fans,

The iRDDU has been officially released. It's free for anyone who wants it!

http://www.irddu.com

Many thanks to everyone who made this a reality!

The Data Display Unit for iRacing is a freeware software solution which allows anyone with an separate monitor to view their critical engine and other data on a gauge cluster very similar to ones found in many auto racing cars. The end result and benefit is a more satisfying iRacing experience.

The program is a collaborative effort with the talent of Paul Thurston making it a reality. The release date is scheduled for September 1st, 2012.

To make the program a reality, I am looking to the community good will to support the development effort. I have pledged 500 USD as a Corporate Benefactor.

You can help the project along by seeing the official funding page at indiegogo here:

The summary of the indiegogo funding campaign in the post below.

Summary of the Program

The iRacing motorsport racing simulation is a popular and ultra realistic racing simulation with over 35 thousand active members living worldwide. Simulated PC auto racing is an activity enjoyed by millions of players, and iRacing offers the most realistic auto racing experience found short of actually being on a real life race track.

Unfortunately, it lacks an option which many who enjoy the service would want. Heretofore, there has existed no option for some users who may want to monitor critical engine and other data on a screen separate from the one(s) displaying the racing which is not pricey or which requires another, external hardware device. Moreover, some users actually cannot see their gauge displays for the reason that those with multiple screens may not be able to fit into them their car's virtual dashboard when the most realistic view settings are used.

The iRacing Data Display Unit, iRDDU for short, will give the iRacing enthusiast exactly what is lost under many circumstances...and it's FREE! It will function on any monitor, and many sim racing fans have multiple monitors connected to their PC system.

We’re proud to have assembled a team of motivated, enthusiastic and EXPERIECNED programmers who have all the skills needed to make this program a reality. Our collective sim racing experiences spans many decades. Our lead developer was very active with creating a very popular program for Grand Prix Legends - iRacing's progenitor - and his program is even remaining in service with the most loyal GPL fans.

Paul Thurston developed GEM+ for Grand Prix Legends. GEM+ was used at its height by more than 10,000 users – a time when sim racing started becoming popular and was a program which allowed Grand Prix Legends users virtually unlimited control over their software settings and parameters. It not only made the title more efficient, but it also gave the fan base a tool with which they could enjoy their racing experience that much more fully. GEM+ still remains in active service for some – many years later.

Paul’s role as the Executive Developer and lead programmer of the Data Display Unit for iRacing ensures that the program will deliver precisely as promised, and it’s his effort which has brought this project to reality. Indeed there is no better man for the task.

Derek Speare Designs is a sim racing component manufacturer who has thousands of customers worldwide. The DSD name is known by many sim racers to deliver quality, value and service unparalleled. Derek Speare is the Program Facilitator and one of the Corporate Benefactors of the iRDDU effort. Derek’s dedication to service is unmatched, and all who know him know he delivers. Derek’s role in the project is not for compensation, and as a Corporate Benefactor, he has pledged his own funds as such to support the development process.

Why Indiegogo?

Indiegogo is an excellent venue for which to generate investment capital and exposure for the iRDDU. The iRDDU will be freeware, and since programmers must be paid, there is every reason to ask for the community to support the development of it.

4250 USD is required to pay programming staff and to develop the program to reality;
DSD is a proven long term performer with a track record for excellence;
Paul Thurston's track record speaks for itself

What Does Contributing Do?

Our contributors will receive out gratitude and know that they have made a valuable program a reality. Those who contribute at various levels will receive certain benefits:

A 10 dollar contribution will earn our love and admiration and allow you to sleep soundly knowing that you will soon be receiving a link to download the iRDDU program AHEAD of the official release;
A 65 dollar contribution will enroll you into the official beta testing program;
For 500 dollars you will become one of our "Corporate Benefactors" and for that we will prominently display your logo on the iRDDU screen so others using the program will know that you support their efforts.

Other Ways You Can Help

Wow. I've been looking for something like this ever since I subscribed, but all I've found are dashboards for phones...

So, when will you be ready to take my money, Derek? Are you providing just the software, or will you sell the display too? Is that a general use USB monitor or did you have it manufactured specially for you? How about giving it a blue backlight so it mimics the Motec units some of the cars in the service have? How about some shift lights? Can you set the speedometer digits a little bit larger?

So many questions!

Thanks, Jav - you're a true Gent!

@Coxis - no special hardware is needed. Any monitor will work. Suggestions are noted and know that I race too. I promise more information very, very soon.

It would be pretty sweet if you could replicate the displays used on the different cars.

I'd suggest smaller bars on the rev counter, it looks like there are too few of them representing the top of the rev range.

How do they look similar? None of the huds on that video look similar to what Derek posted... :confused:

Derek it would also be awesome if you could run it on a second computer over a LAN like iSpeed does.

Here are a couple of new videos demonstrating the flexibility of the DDU program. I made both of these display profiles with a bit of time. The program allows the user to make virtually any display he wishes.

Of course, there will be some included, generic ones like the blue one I made in the first video. It's my hope that others make their own and circulate them. There are other features planned to be added like analog gauges :)

The red in the second video is very tough to record. The McLaren F1 module was made from their engineering drawings of the device.

Looking very good Derek! Really like the flexibility of the concept! Looks like we will be able to recreate the various displays used troughout the different cars in the service! Loving it!

yep - that's the intention - and you can make virtually any display you want. If you want a bigger screen and to fill that up, no worries, you can just scale the resolution. There are some additional things to add into it, but it's close :)

Here's a C6 dash - there's some things to do with it for the reason that we can't get some of the values.

This is pure DDU and not a screen shot from the car.

Here's the Cadillac CTS dash:

Making it light up in white is possible, but we need to iron out some things.

I'm going to be putting out the beta files tonight. I'll include some of my templates I've been using to get everyone going.

Cheers,

d

Oh!!! Now you've done it!!! I want it !!!! I want this awesome contraption now!!! Lol!
Looking awesome Derek!

I like yours and Paul's effort here Derek, I donated $20 to the cause. I always preferred analog gauges but I think these type of digital Apps definetly have their place. I will have to invest in another 7" monitor and plan them into my new dash system, which leads me to a question. Can I run 2 Apps of this nature at the same time? iSpeed on the 1st 7" monitor and your App on the 2nd 7" monitor?

Thank you for the contribution :) Analogue gauges are coming. I can't say when, though, but this is a big thing Paul wants to include.

I'd doubt there would be issues with the DDU and other programs which access the iRacing API.

Any suggestions on where and what to look for in a display like that?
